James Sands

Shawn Bagnall enters his fifth season as head coach of the lightweight rowing team in 2017-18.

Hired as the lightweight program’s assistant coach in August of 2015, Sands brings with him over 10 years of high-level collegiate competition as both a coach and student-athlete to Navy.

Head Coach • Fifth Season • Washington State ‘99

As Navy Head Coach Bagnall took the reigns of the Navy lightweight program in the summer of 2013 ... In his first year at the helm, both of Navy’s varsity eight and varsity four boats competed at the IRA National Championships for the first time since 2011 ... The program finished the season ranked seventh in the nation ... Defeated Georgetown for the Forster Cup and Penn for the Callow Cup ... As a second-year leader of the lightweight program in 2014-15, Bagnall once again had multiple crews qualify and race at the IRAs ... In 2015, Navy was represented with entries in the V8, V4+ and V4- events ... Navy’s V8 crew finished eighth overall at the IRAs ... During the regular season, the Mids defended the Forster Cup with a win over Georgetown ... 2016 saw Bagnall and the Mids return to the IRAs with three crews: the V8, V4+ and V4-... The 2016 Navy V8 boat finished seventh overall as did the program at the championship ... For the first time since 2008, Navy defeated Harvard for the Haines Trophy ...The Mids continued to hold the Forster Cup over Georgetown with the third straight win of Bagnall’s tenure ... In his fourth season in 2017, Bagnall and the Mids earned regular season wins over Princeton, Columbia and Georgetown before winning the 4V and 5V titles at the Eastern Sprints ... At the IRA National Championships, Navy entered V8, V4+ and V4- and collected the program’s first individual boat title since 2012 when the V4+ finished in first place. As Syracuse Assistant Coach Worked primarily with the freshman crews in addition to serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator ... Under Bagnall’s tutelage, several freshmen rowers advanced to the first or second varsity boats ... In 2012, the varsity crew included two members of Bagnall’s freshman boat from the previous year; the duo helped the Orange take fifth at the IRA National Championships, which was the program’s best finish in 22 years ... In 2011, he guided his freshman crew to a 10th-place finish at the Eastern Sprints and helped the varsity boat take ninth at the IRA National Championships. As Gonzaga Freshman/Novice Coach Served for eight years as the men’s freshman/novice coach, junior varsity coach and recruiting coordinator ... Bagnall led the Bulldogs freshman/novice four to a Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) championship in 2010 ... He also guided the freshman eight to 13th and 15th-place finishes, respectively, at the 2008 and 2009 IRA Regattas ... In 2006, Bagnall helped the freshman eight claim its first bid to the IRA Regatta. As Washington State Club Coach Took over the club program’s top spot in 2000 ... At the helm of the Cougars, he helped improve the competition level and athlete retention rates. International Experience Since 2011 he has worked as an assistant coach with the U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team ... Bagnall helped the women’s 8+ boat to consecutive gold medals at the 2012 and `13 U-23 World Championships ... He also served as head coach of the women’s 4- and 2- at the 2012 and ‘13 Under-23 World Championships. Rowing Experience Enjoyed a successful career as a varsity rower from 1996-99 at Washington State ... As team captain, he was an All-Pac-10 Conference selection in 1998. General Received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from WSU in 1999 and completed his master’s degree in sport and athletic administration at Gonzaga in 2009.

Assistant Coach • Third Season • Wisconsin ‘07

As Navy Assistant Coach In his second season with the Mids in 2017, Sands continued playing an intricate role in the development of Navy’s lower boats ... At the 2017 Eastern Sprints, the Mids’ 4V and 5V crews finished in first place overall ... At the IRAs, Sands led the Mids V4+ crew to a national championship winning performance ... As a first-year coach at Navy in 2016, Sands worked with the younger rowers and lower boats to help the program groom its depth ... At the 2016 Eastern Sprints, Navy’s 4V and 5V crews finished top-four with the fourth boat taking the silver medal ... As a program, Navy’s depth helped it fifth in the Jope Cup standings. As Texas Assistant Coach Served on staff at the University of Texas in the role of boatman for the varsity women’s program during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In 2015, the Longhorns finished seventh in the country at the NCAA Championships, the highest placement by a Texas rowing squad at the national championship in school history. In recognition of the Longhorns’ success, Sands and the other members of the staff were selected as the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Division One Staff of the Year. As Penn Heavyweight Assistant Coach Sands was an assistant coach with the Penn heavyweight team from 2011 to 2013 ... With the Quakers, he helped with recruiting and organizing official visits, as well as gathering talent and coaching walk-ons from Penn’s campus. Sands’ varsity four crew in 2013 came in first place at the Eastern Sprints, earning the program’s first medal of any kind at the Sprints since 2006. As George Washington Heavyweight Assistant Coach A member of the Colonials’ staff from 2007 to 2010 in an assistant coaching capacity after holding the same position with the George Washington heavyweight squad from 2007 to 2010 ... Sands led the freshmen program and saw GW reach new heights with a ninth place finish at the Eastern Sprints in 2009. Sands’ freshman crew finished the 2008 season with a 7-1 duel racing record. As U.S. Rowing Olympic Development Camp Head Coach Away from the collegiate ranks, Sands was a head coach at the US Rowing Olympic Men’s Development Camp at the University of Pennsylvania and at the MidAtlantic region between 2008 and 2013. He also served as head coach of the women’s USRowing Development Camp at the University of Texas during the summer of 2015. Highlights from his time with USRowing include coaching both sculling and sweep boats to medal winning performances at the USRowing Club National Championships and Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. As a Competitive Rower A 2007 graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Sands was a fouryear member of the Badgers’ heavyweight crew program ... In his first year, Sands served as a coxswain on the freshman eight, coxing his crew to an undefeated duel season record ... Over next three years, he began rowing, capturing several Midwest Championships titles as part of the nationally-ranked heavyweight squad ... He graduated from Wisconsin with a degree in political science ... After college, Sands trained as a lightweight for several short stints at Riverside boat club in Boston, Massachusetts and the Pennsylvania Athletic Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1931 Navy lightweights win their dual with Syracuse; lose a dual race to Penn and then place third at the National Henley Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa. 1933 Navy lightweights win their only dual with MIT, then go on to take third place at the National Henley Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., behind Princeton and Columbia. 1934 Navy lightweights win their only dual race with Columbia. 1935 Navy lightweights win their dual with Ithaca College. Navy then finishes a close fourth at the American Henley Regatta in Philadelphia, behind Princeton, Penn and Columbia. 1956 Navy lightweight JV wins bronze medal at the EARC Sprints. 1957 Navy lightweights, coached by Hubbell Davidson ’45, win both duals with Penn and MIT and lose to Princeton. Navy then goes on to place fifth at the EARC Championships. They go on to the San Diego Crew Classic for the first time and take fourth place in the grand finals. Wins both the Haines Cup and the Callow Cup and take fifth place at the EARC Sprints.

The varsity boat ended the regular season with an undefeated record, won the Eastern Sprints title and the IRA National Championship. Navy would go on to reach the semifinal round at the Royal Henley Regatta in London, England. The crew was selected as the EARC’s Crew of the Year, while head coach Rob Friedrich was tabbed as the EARC Coach of the Year. The crew also qualified for the Navy Hall of Fame.

1986 Navy lightweights have a 4-2 record and win the Callow Cup (Penn) en route to a sixth-place finish at the EARC Sprints.

2005 Navy placed all five of its boats into the grand finals at the Eastern Sprints, winning both freshmen events and winning two additional medals.

1987 Patrick Manion takes over as head coach Navy lightweight crew team. First plebe boat wins bronze medal at the EARC Sprints.

2006 Navy won the program’s first Jope Cup (overall team points title) at the Eastern Sprints.

1988 The Navy lightweights have a 2-2 record in winning the Callow Cup (Penn) and placing fourth at the EARC Sprints. 1991 Mike Hughes takes over as head coach of Navy lightweight crew team.

2007 The Mids repeated as Jope Cup champions, while the 2V8 and 3V8 varsity crews won individual boat titles at the Eastern Sprints.

1993 Navy wins the Crawford Bay Crew Classic and goes 5-2 en route to taking seventh place at the EARC Sprints.

2008 Navy landed all five of its boats in the grand finals at the Eastern Sprints, winning in the 2V8, 3V8 and 2F races. The Midshipmen went on to finish second in the grand finals of both the V8 and V4+ with coxswain races at the IRA National Championship.

1995 Cmdr. Jim Snead ‘73, takes over as head coach. Third varsity wins gold medal at the EARC Sprints (varsity) and competes in the IRAs for the first time, taking fifth place in the Grand Finals.

1996 Major Greg Morrison ‘77, takes over as head coach. The Navy lightweights have a 2-2 record and place fifth in the grand finals at the IRAs.

2010 In his first year as head coach, Steve Perry led Navy to a 6-2 record and a second-place finish at the IRA Regatta. The Mids held on to the Callow Cup for the 10th consecutive season and reclaimed the Eads Johnson Trophy for the first time since 2007.

1997 Dale Hurley ’89, takes over as head coach of Navy lightweight crew team. 1998 Lightweight plebes place first and second at the Belly of the Carnegie. 1999 Navy lightweights win the Patriot League Championship. Plebe crew finishes in fifth place in the first boat and wins gold in the second boat at the EARC Sprints. 2000 Navy lightweights compete in the San Diego Crew Classic for the second time in the history of the program, finishing third in grand finals. Plebes capture the top-two slots at the Belly of the Carnegie. Varsity secures an automatic bid for 2001 Head of the Charles by placing fifth overall and fourth among colleges at 2000 regatta. 2001 Navy placed fifth at the season-ending IRA National Championship Regatta. At the end of the spring season, Rob Friedrich replaces Dale Hurley as the head coach of the lightweight program. 2002 Navy’s varsity places second at the IRAs. 2V8 wins Cornell Trophy for first time since 1961. Navy team places second in Jope Cup team-point standings. 2003 The Mids win three medals at the Eastern Sprints, with the

Navy also posted wins over Columbia and Penn. 2012 The varsity four won the IRA National Championship. 2013 The varsity four qualified for the grand finals at the IRA National Championship and took sixth place. 2014 Shawn Bagnall joins the program prior to the 2013-14 school year as the head coach and leads Navy to qualifying both its V8 and V4 boats into the IRA Regatta for the first time since 2011. 2015 Navy repeats its 2014 feat with multiple boat entries at the IRA Regatta. Mids race crews in the varsity eight, varsity four+ and varsity four- competitions. 2016 Won both the Haines Trophy and Forster Cup before racing three boats at IRA Regatta: V8, V4+ and V4-. Program finished seventh nationally. 2017 Won the Murtaugh, WIT and Forster Cups before its 4V8 and 5V8 crews won gold at Eastern Sprints. At the IRAs, the Mids’ V4+ took home the the national championship (first IRA boat title for Navy since 2012); team placed fifth overall.
