2012 NAVY MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY AL CANTELLO

Head Coach • 45th Season 50th Year at Navy LaSalle ‘55 Al Cantello enters his 50th season at the Naval Academy and 45th as cross country head coach. Since his arrival at U.S.N.A. 50 years ago, the Midshipmen have been one of the most consistent men’s cross country programs, both regionally and nationally. Last season, Cantello led the Mids to their fourth consecutive Patriot League Championship while garnering conference coach of the year accolades for the fourth straight season. In 44 seasons at the helm of the cross country program, Cantello boasts a 241-69-1 career record. Cantello’s teams have also shined in the classroom, as in each of the past two seasons the Mids earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team accolades with a team GPA over 3.00. Cantello has coached several standout runners in Annapolis in both cross country and as an assistant coach with the Navy track team. Most recently, Andrew Hanko (2007-10) became the first runner in program history to win consecutive Patriot League cross country titles. The three-time FirstTeam All-Patriot League honoree was the first Midshipman to qualify for the NCAA Championship since 1999 and finished 119th at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Jon Clemens received All-America honors during the 1996 cross country season, while John Mentzer was named a 1997 All-American in both indoor (5,000 meters) and outdoor (10,000 meters) track. Michael Ryan earned similar honors during the 1999 indoor track season for his 4:01.57 time in the mile, and Erik Schmidt took fifth place in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March 2003.

The Cantello File

In addition, two of Navy’s distance relay teams were ranked among the nation’s top 15 during the 1999 outdoor campaign. The mile relay team of Eric Adams, John McNamara, Ryan Runge and Ryan was fourth in the nation, while the distance medley relay team of Adams, Torrance Chaplin, Karlton Holston and Ryan was nationally ranked, as well. As a result of his teams’ success, Cantello has been amply recognized, including being named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year three times (1984, ‘85 and ‘92) and has been Patriot League Coach of the Year each of the last three seasons. In 1997, the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Cantello the Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for a coach or faculty member who did the most for the physical development of the Midshipmen in physical education. Cantello also received the inaugural Tom Hamilton Teaching/Coaching Award, as voted by his peers that same year. From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, guiding Navy’s men’s indoor and outdoor track squads while maintaining his cross country duties. As Navy’s head track coach, Cantello led the Mids to a 67-9-1 dual meet record. During the 1986-87 academic year, his combined record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field was a remarkable 23-1. Cantello’s all-time head coaching record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track is 317-81-2, good for a .794 career winning percentage. Among his victories are 44 N-Stars, including 33 as the head coach of the cross country program - more than any other Navy mentor in one sport. Cantello has authored the Mids to a 33-9-1 mark against Army, prior to which Navy held a 12-19 record against the Black Knights. A 1955 graduate of La Salle, Cantello was a two-time All-American in the javelin throw. In 2009, he was inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame for becoming the first three-time winner in the javelin throw at the famed event. He was also enshrined as a charter member of La Salle’s Hall of Athletes in 1961 and in the spring of 2012, Cantello was inducted in the inaugural class of the Middle Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. A former world-class competitor in the javelin, Cantello once held every national and international record in the event. In 1959, he set a world record in the javelin and competed for the U.S. Olympic Team the following year in the 1960 Games in Rome. In 1964, Sport magazine named Cantello to its all-time track & field team and voted him the world’s greatest competitor in the javelin. Cantello and his wife, Jackie, are the parents of three adult children - Karla McMahon, Karen O’Kane and the late Albert Jr. - and seven grandchildren.

2012 NAVY MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Season Outlook

The Navy men’s cross country team is currently in the midst of one of its most successful stretches in program history. The team has claimed four consecutive Patriot League titles and has finished in the top five at the NCAA regional meet in each of the last three seasons. The recent success of the program stems from a strong team-first concept. This season will be no different, as the Mids’ success will largely be determined by the strength of the entire roster. With just four returning letterwinners and two seniors, Navy will look for contributions from everyone. “With a ceiling of six seniors graduating, one would think that our underclass would throw their hands up,” said Navy head coach Al Cantello. “Just the opposite has occurred – this generation of Navy distance men learned what it takes to excel in this program. By osmosis, or otherwise, this fall will be full of surprises. “The desire to improve in this mild form of savagery comes from within. Our depth has always been the bulwark of our program.” The 2012 season will mark Cantello’s 50th year at the Naval Academy and 45th as head coach of the men’s cross country team. The four-time Patriot League Coach of the Year is relishing the opportunity before him and his team this season. “This season will be fun as my title goes from a noun to a verb. Instead of a coach, I’ll be coaching,” he said. Kyle Satterwhite is the Mids’ most experienced returner as the captain has appeared in 19 career meets. The native of Charlottesville, Va., will be counted on to lead a young team that includes a total of 21 freshmen or sophomores. Satterwhite had a solid 2011 campaign as he was one of Navy’s top-five finishers in all seven meets in which he competed. He placed 10th at the Patriot League Championships for the second consecutive year, again earning second-team all-league honors. “We will again have great leadership in Kyle,” said Cantello. Navy’s other senior, Chris Galvin, is the only other returning Mid that competed in seven meets last season. Galvin was one of Navy’s top-five finishers on three occasions in 2011 and saved his best race of the season for last. The native of Austin, Texas, placed 31st and was the Mids’ third finisher at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. With such a small amount of experience returning, the seven-member Navy junior class will help provide additional leadership. “Juniors who could surprise this year include Robbie Patterson, C.J. Elward, coming off a year of injuries, and the surprise of the year, Wes Kennedy,” said Cantello. “Regarding depth, another junior, Sean Rynning will be our bread-and-butter man.” Patterson is the most seasoned third-year member as he appeared in six meets last season and scored in all five of his final races. After taking third overall against Army, the Owings, Md., product helped Navy to another conference title by finishing 12th at the Patriot League Championships, earning second-team all-league accolades. Elward, Alex Merrall and Rynning all competed in five meets in 2011. Rynning was one of Navy’s top-six finishers in three meets, while Merrall scored in a pair of meets. Navy’s underclass-heavy roster starts with 10 sophomores, six of which appeared in a varsity meet in 2011. Last season John Sweeney was the only Midshipmen to see time in a varsity race past the opening week as he ran in the Patriot League Championships. “Rising sophomores who now know the landscape and will contribute heavily are John Sweeney, Jeramy Triplett, Zach Hebda, Brian De La Mora, and another sleeper, Tom Delaney,” said Cantello. While Cantello expects several sophomores to step to the forefront, he also believes a pair of freshmen could make an early mark on the program.

I

“Only a handful of plebes have been impact runners over the years,” Cantello said. “This year will be different as two outstanding runners, Stephen Schroeder and William Miller, will see much varsity action.” Both Schroeder (Illinois) and Miller (Maryland) were high school cross country state champions. The Midshipmen open the 2012 campaign on Sept. 1 with the Harry Lang Invitational, hosted by Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. The following weekend, Navy will return to the Harry Groves Invitational in University Park, Pa. In their last appearance at the event - which typically features some of the strongest teams in the region - the Mids placed third in 2010. On Sept. 15, the Mids will host the annual Navy Invitational at the U.S.N.A. Golf Course. Navy placed four runners in the top 12 at the event last season, taking second place overall. This year’s schedule features a new event for the Midshipmen, as they will head to South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 28 for the Notre Dame Invitational. After another week off, the Mids will host Army in the Star Meet on Oct. 13 in Annapolis. Navy has defeated Army in three consecutive duals and holds a 46-28-1 all-time advantage against the Black Knights. Navy will go for its fifth consecutive Patriot League title when Colgate hosts the conference championships on Oct. 27. The 2012 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship will be held in University Park, Pa., on Nov. 9. The top two finishing teams from each of the nation’s nine regions will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.

The Willie McCool Monument on the USNA Cross Country Course memorializes Navy’s 1982 team captain that was one of seven astronauts that perished in Space Shuttle Columbia during re-entry on February 1, 2003. The last audible transmission received from Columbia before the tragedy occurred at 8:59 a.m. that morning - 16 minutes from the shuttle’s scheduled landing at 9:15 a.m. On Navy’s home course during his senior season in 1982, McCool recorded a career-best time of 24:27 - which stands as the 28th-fastest Navy time in course history. The monument is located where he would have been 8:27 into the race during that day - 16 minutes from home. McCool, 41, was a former test pilot in the Navy and served that role for the STS-107 (Space Shuttle Columbia). He received a bachelor of science degreee in applied science from the U.S Naval Academy in 1983, a master of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1985, and a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1992. McCool, as a member of the Blue Team, worked with many experiments and was also responsible for maneuvering Columbia as part of several experiments mounted in the shuttle’s payload bay. Selected by NASA in 1996, McCool was making his first spaceflight.

2012 NAVY MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores.
