2013 NAVY MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY In addition, two of Navy’s distance relay teams were ranked among the nation’s top 15 during the 1999 outdoor campaign. The mile relay team of Eric AL Adams, John McNamara, Ryan Runge and Ryan was fourth in the nation, while the distance medley relay team of Adams, Torrance Chaplin, Karlton Holston CANTELLO and Ryan was nationally ranked, as well. Head Coach • 46th Season 51st Year at Navy LaSalle ‘55

Al Cantello is now in his 51st season at the Naval Academy and 46th as cross country head coach. Since his arrival at U.S.N.A. over 50 years ago, the Midshipmen have been one of the most consistent men’s cross country programs, both regionally and nationally. Cantello led the Mids to four consecutive Patriot League Championships from 2008-11 while garnering conference coach of the year accolades each time. In 45 seasons at the helm of the cross country program, Cantello boasts a 242-69-1 career record. Cantello’s teams have also shined in the classroom, as in each of the past three seasons the Mids earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team accolades with a team GPA over 3.00. Cantello has coached several standout runners in Annapolis in both cross country and as an assistant coach with the Navy track team. Most recently, Andrew Hanko (2007-10) became the first runner in program history to win consecutive Patriot League cross country titles. The three-time FirstTeam All-Patriot League honoree was the first Midshipman to qualify for the NCAA Championship since 1999 and finished 119th at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Jon Clemens received All-America honors during the 1996 cross country season, while John Mentzer was named a 1997 All-American in both indoor (5,000 meters) and outdoor (10,000 meters) track. Michael Ryan earned similar honors during the 1999 indoor track season for his 4:01.57 time in the mile, and Erik Schmidt took fifth place in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March 2003.

The Cantello File Coaching Record

• Owns a 242-69-1 (.777) career record in 45 seasons, including a 35-9-1 (.789) mark against Army • Has won 46 combined N-Star victories as the head coach of the men’s cross country and track & field programs (has a combined 80 N-Star victories as a coach) • His 35 N-Star victories in cross country are the most in one sport for any coach in Navy history

As a result of his teams’ success, Cantello has been amply recognized, including being named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year three times (1984, ‘85 and ‘92) and has been Patriot League Coach of the Year each of the last three seasons. In 1997, the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Cantello the Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for a coach or faculty member who did the most for the physical development of the Midshipmen in physical education. Cantello also received the inaugural Tom Hamilton Teaching/Coaching Award, as voted by his peers that same year. From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, guiding Navy’s men’s indoor and outdoor track squads while maintaining his cross country duties. As Navy’s head track coach, Cantello led the Mids to a 67-9-1 dual meet record. During the 1986-87 academic year, his combined record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field was a remarkable 23-1. Cantello’s all-time head coaching record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track is 318-81-2, good for a .796 career winning percentage. Among his victories are 46 N-Stars, including 35 as the head coach of the cross country program - more than any other Navy mentor in one sport. Cantello has authored the Mids to a 35-9-1 mark against Army, prior to which Navy held a 12-19 record against the Black Knights. A 1955 graduate of La Salle, Cantello was a two-time All-American in the javelin throw. In 2009, he was inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame for becoming the first three-time winner in the javelin throw at the famed event. He was also enshrined as a charter member of La Salle’s Hall of Athletes in 1961 and in the spring of 2012, Cantello was inducted in the inaugural class of the Middle Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. A former world-class competitor in the javelin, Cantello once held every national and international record in the event. In 1959, he set a world record in the javelin and competed for the U.S. Olympic Team the following year in the 1960 Games in Rome. In 1964, Sport magazine named Cantello to its all-time track & field team and voted him the world’s greatest competitor in the javelin. Cantello and his wife, Jackie, are the parents of three adult children - Karla McMahon, Karen O’Kane and the late Albert Jr. - and seven grandchildren.

2013 NAVY MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Season Outlook Robert Navy Men’s Cross Country will again be a Patriot League Championship contender. Each year this is our goal. Suffice it to say the annual Army dual Patterson meet scheduled smack at mid-season impedes our training cycle. It goes with the territory and we accept it. The Army/Navy culture mandates that we peak several times a season – an art and not a science. Our personnel is always deep to offset injuries and illness. Sophomore Steve Schroeder has already shown his desire to achieve his fiery goals earlier than most. Would that I had this problem with the shank of our squad. Team captain Robbie Patterson, coming off an injury, has done everything possible to gain mid-season condition and there is good news ahead. Even in recovery, he leads. Robbie’s senior counterpart, Sean Rynning, having put in a great summer of training, is currently our “on the course” leader. Sean, a pure competitor, is followed by a deceptively gritty runner in John Sweeney. John is also a bulwark of our top five. The dark horse on the whole team is Junior Zach Hebda, whose summer training portends great things. There is another sophomore besides Schroeder who will have a breakout season. Sam Peckham is no longer under the radar. Sam figures prominently into our strength. So after Army, on to the Patriot League. Six years ago we were runners up. Then we took four straight titles. Last season we lost by two points. This year it will again be a donnybrook. Finally, the Region II NCAA Championships at Lehigh…..Fire the pistol.

Senior • Captain Owings, Md. DeMatha Catholic

Cantello on Patterson: “His peers elected him team captain but for no other reason than grit. Robbie is the proverbial humming bird i.e fuselage to big, wings too small, goes from flower to flower.” Patterson’s Career Honors • Second-Team All-Patriot League (2011, ‘12) Date Sept. 1 Sept. 8 Sept. 28 Oct. 13 Oct. 27 Nov. 10

Willie McCool Monument The Willie McCool Monument on the USNA Cross Country Course memorializes Navy’s 1982 team captain that was one of seven astronauts that perished in Space Shuttle Columbia during re-entry on February 1, 2003. The last audible transmission received from Columbia before the tragedy occurred at 8:59 a.m. that morning - 16 minutes from the shuttle’s scheduled landing at 9:15 a.m. On Navy’s home course during his senior season in 1982, McCool recorded a career-best time of 24:27 - which stands as the 28th-fastest Navy time in course history. The monument is located where he would have been 8:27 into the race during that day - 16 minutes from home. McCool, 41, was a former test pilot in the Navy and served that role for the STS-107 (Space Shuttle Columbia). He received a bachelor of science degreee in applied science from the U.S Naval Academy in 1983, a master of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1985, and a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1992. McCool, as a member of the Blue Team, worked with many experiments and was also responsible for maneuvering Columbia as part of several experiments mounted in the shuttle’s payload bay. Selected by NASA in 1996, McCool was making his first spaceflight.

2013 NAVY MEN’S SOCCER

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 80 percent of its teams posting an APR score of 985 or higher in the most recent data, and 71 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2012-13 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

Stephen Cooksey earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors following Navy’s title at the Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships.

I The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball and baseball APR. I 71 Patriot League teams, and 74 from full-member institutions, received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for finishing in the top-10 percent of their sport in APR data. I Lehigh repeated as the top men’s program in the Presidents’ Cup standings, while Navy once again led the way on the women’s side. I Bucknell’s Leonard Joseph and Navy’s Zack Duncavage each earned Second-Team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. I Navy’s Annie-Norah Beveridge and American’s Mark Allen ran at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. I Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo was up for the Tewaaraton award in women’s lacrosse, and became the first Patriot Leaguer since 1997 to be named an All-American by the IWLCA. I Navy became the first Patriot League team to win an NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament game when it beat Monmouth in the first round on May 10. I Six Patriot League student-athletes were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships: Navy’s Chris Galvin (Track and Field), Laura Gorinski (Swimming and Diving), Brigid Byrne (Track and Field) and Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s Lacrosse); Fordham’s Patrick Murray (Football) and Bucknell’s Christian Treat (Swimming and Diving). I Army’s Brendan Buckley and Navy’s Brigid Byrne were named the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, respectively. I 14 student-athletes from Patriot League sports earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team selections for Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s At-Large), Brigid Byrne (Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country) and Chris Galvin (Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country); Colgate’s Chris Looney (Football) and Army’s Brendan Buckley (Men’s At-Large). I Navy’s Laura Gorinski (Women’s Swimming) and Army’s Ariana Mankus (Volleyball) were the Patriot League nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.
