AL CANTELLO

Head Coach • 49th Season 54th Year at Navy LaSalle ‘55 Al Cantello is now in his 54th season at the Naval Academy and 49th as cross country head coach. Since his arrival at U.S.N.A. over 50 years ago, the Midshipmen have been one of the most consistent men’s cross country programs, both regionally and nationally. Cantello led the Mids to seven of the last eight Patriot League Championships from 2008-11 and 2013-15 while garnering conference coach of the year accolades each time. In 48 seasons at the helm of the cross country program, Cantello boasts a 245-70-1 career record. Cantello’s teams have also shined in the classroom in three of the past six seasons the Mids earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team accolades with a team GPA over 3.00. Cantello has coached several standout runners in Annapolis in both cross country and as an assistant coach with the Navy track team. Most recently, Stephen Schroeder, class of 2016, won the 2014 Patriot League individual title and qualified for that year’s NCAA Championship. Andrew Hanko, class of 2010, became the first runner in program history to win consecutive Patriot League cross country titles (2009, ’10). The three-time First-Team All-Patriot League honoree, also qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championship. Additionally, Jon Clemens received All-America honors during the 1996 cross country season, while John Mentzer was named a 1997 All-American in both indoor (5,000 meters) and outdoor (10,000 meters) track. Michael Ryan earned similar honors during the 1999 indoor track season for his 4:01.57 time in the mile, and Erik Schmidt took fifth place in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March 2003. Cantello’s most decorated runner was Ron Harris (’87), who was successful under Coach Cantello’s tutelage in both cross country and track

The Cantello File Coaching Record

• Owns a 242-70-1 (.777) career record in 48 seasons, including a 36-10-1

(.789) mark against Army

• Has won 47 combined N-Star victories as the head coach of the men’s

cross country and track & field programs (has a combined 96 N-Star victories as a coach) • His 36 N-Star victories in cross country are the most in one sport for any coach in Navy history

Coaching Accomplishments

• Coached three NCAA Cross Country All-Americans • Three-time NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year (1984, ‘85 and ‘92) • NCAA Mid-Atlantic Assistant Coach of the Year (2010) • Seven-time Patriot League Coach of the Year (2008, ‘09, ‘10, ‘11, ‘13,

‘14, ‘15) • Penn Relays Wall of Fame (2009) • Naval Academy Alumni Association’s Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award (1997) • Tom Hamilton Teaching/Coaching Award (1997)

and field. Harris garnered cross country All-America honors in 1985 and track and field All-America laurels in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter run in 1987. Harris went on to qualify for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000-meter run. In addition, two of Navy’s distance relay teams were ranked among the nation’s top 15 during the 1999 outdoor campaign. The mile relay team of Eric Adams, John McNamara, Ryan Runge and Ryan was fourth in the nation, while the distance medley relay team of Adams, Torrance Chaplin, Karlton Holston and Ryan was nationally ranked, as well. As a result of his teams’ success, Cantello has been amply recognized, including being named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year three times (1984, `85 and `92) and has been Patriot League Coach of the Year each of the last three seasons. In 1997, the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Cantello the Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for a coach or faculty member who did the most for the physical development of the Midshipmen in physical education. Cantello also received the inaugural Tom Hamilton Teaching/Coaching Award, as voted by his peers that same year. Cantello, a 1955 La Salle graduate, has spent over a half century at the Naval Academy and has served as the head coach of the men’s cross country team for the last 48 years. Over the course of his tenure, Cantello’s teams have beaten the archrival Black Knights 36 times in cross country and 12 times in track and field with him as the head coach (1981-1988). Cantello also has guided the Mids to seven Patriot League titles in the last eight seasons. Including his years as an assistant coach for the track and field team (19681980, 1989-pres.), he has accrued 96 wins versus Army. From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, guiding Navy’s men’s indoor and outdoor track squads while maintaining his cross country duties. As Navy’s head track coach, Cantello led the Mids to a 67-9-1 dual meet record. During the 1986-87 academic year, his combined record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field was a remarkable 23-1. Cantello’s all-time head coaching record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track is 321-82-2, good for a .796 career winning percentage. Cantello was a two-time All-American in the javelin throw. In 2009, he was inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame for becoming the first three-time winner in the javelin throw at the famed event. He was also enshrined as a charter member of La Salle’s Hall of Athletes in 1961 and in the spring of 2012, Cantello was inducted in the inaugural class of the Middle Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. A former world-class competitor in the javelin, Cantello once held every national and international record in the event. In 1959, he set a world record in the javelin and competed for the U.S. Olympic Team the following year in the 1960 Games in Rome. In 1964, Sport magazine named Cantello to its all-time track & field team and voted him the world’s greatest competitor in the javelin. Cantello was inducted to the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame on December 2013. Cantello and his late wife, Jackie, are the parents of three adult children Karla McMahon, Karen O’Kane and the late Albert Jr. - and seven grandchildren.

Season Outlook

Two-time defending Patriot League Champion Navy men’s cross country team will begin its 2016 at the Salisbury Classic on Saturday at Winter Place Park. The Mids return nine letterwinners, including four all-league runners. Despite the losses of cross country standouts Steve Schroeder and Sam Peckham, Navy returns the bulk of its runners from last season’s championship team, including Patriot League Runner of the Meet Lucas Stalnaker (Tega Cay, S.C.). Stalnaker returns as Navy’s top performer, finishing first among Navy runners in six of the Mids seven meets last year. Along with Stalnaker, senior Ryan McCoy (New Glarus, Wis.) was given the honors as this season’s captain. McCoy has been a steady runner the past two seasons and finished in the top five amongst Navy runners in four meets last year. Returning seniors Hale Bullen (Annapolis, Md.) and Mitchell Pratt (Temple City, Calif.) also add depth and experience to this season’s team as both runners placed in the top 14 at the 2015 Patriot League Championship meet to earn all-league status. Navy will have a strong schedule to prepare for both the league championship and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Mids will use the Salisbury Fall Classic (Sept. 3) and Navy Invitational (Sept. 10) to not only practice their pack mentality, but to see where each runner is on the team to find the top 12 competitors. Navy then will use its top 12 runners in two meets that will be full of talent, which includes the Roy Griak Invitational (Sept. 24) and the Paul Short Run (Oct. 1). Following a week off for rest, Navy will use 12 of its best runners to compete in the annual Star Meet against archrival Army West Point. The Mids have dominated the last two meets, recording a perfect score of 15-50 last year and were one-point shy of perfect in 2014, 16-47. Navy has won six of the last seven Star meets and is 36-10-1 under head coach Al Cantello. After the Star Meet, Navy again will have a week off before preparing to the 2016 Patriot League Championship, hosted by Lafayette, on Saturday, Oct. 29. Like the 2015 Star meet, the Mids won the league championship for the third-straight year in dominating fashion, placing the first four runners and tallying a score of 19, which was 69 points better than league runner-up Boston University. Navy will return nine of the 12 runners that finished in the top 51 at last season’s championship meet. With one more week to rest after the league championship, the Mids will send their top 12 runners to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, hosted by Penn State, on Friday, Nov. 11. The top-two teams in this weekend’s regional championship will advance to the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 19. In addition to the top-two teams, 13 at-large teams will be selected from a national pool to partake in the national championship. The topfour runners not associated with the top-two teams to cross the finish line this Saturday will earn an automatic bid as an individual to the NCAA Championship. Also, two at-large runners will be selected from a national list to compete at the national championship.

Willie McCool Monument

(pictured right) The Willie McCool Monument on the USNA Cross Country Course memorializes Navy’s 1982 team captain that was one of seven astronauts that perished in Space Shuttle Columbia during re-entry on February 1, 2003. The last audible transmission received from Columbia before the tragedy occurred at 8:59 a.m. that morning - 16 minutes from the shuttle’s scheduled landing at 9:15 a.m. On Navy’s home course during his senior season in 1982, McCool recorded a career-best time of 24:27 - which stands as the 28th-fastest Navy time in course history. The monument is located where he would have been 8:27 into the race during that day - 16 minutes from home. McCool, 41, was a former test pilot in the Navy and served that role for the STS-107 (Space Shuttle Columbia). He received a bachelor of science degreee in applied science from the U.S Naval Academy in 1983, a master of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1985, and a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1992. McCool, as a member of the Blue Team, worked with many experiments and was also responsible for maneuvering Columbia as part of several experiments mounted in the shuttle’s payload bay. Selected by NASA in 1996, McCool was making his first spaceflight.
