2017 MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY AL CANTELLO

Head Coach • 50th Season 55th Year at Navy LaSalle ‘55 Al Cantello is now in his 55th season at the Naval Academy and 50th as cross country head coach. Since his arrival at U.S.N.A. over 50 years ago, the Midshipmen have been one of the most consistent men’s cross country programs, both regionally and nationally. Cantello led the Mids to eight of the last nine Patriot League Championships from 2008-11 and 2013-16 while garnering conference coach of the year accolades each time. In 49 seasons at the helm of the cross country program, Cantello boasts a 24670-1 career record. Cantello’s teams have also shined in the classroom as three squads have earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team accolades with a team GPA over 3.00 since 2011. Cantello has coached several standout runners in Annapolis in both cross country and as an assistant coach with the Navy track team. Most recently, Lucas Stalnaker, class of 2017, earned back-to-back Patriot League individual titles in 2015 and 2016 before going on to finish fifth overall at the 10k at the 2017 NCAA Championship and garner a nod as a First Team All-American. Prior to that Stephen Schroeder, class of 2016, won the 2014 Patriot League individual title and qualified for that year’s NCAA Championship. Andrew Hanko, class of 2010, became the first runner in program history to win consecutive Patriot League cross country titles (2009, ’10). The three-time First-Team All-Patriot League honoree, also qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championship. Additionally, Jon Clemens received All-America honors during the 1996 cross country season, while John Mentzer was named a 1997 All-American in both indoor

mark against Army

• Has won 49 combined N-Star victories as the head coach of the men’s cross

country and track & field programs (has a combined 98 N-Star victories as a coach) • His 37 N-Star victories in cross country are the most in one sport for any coach in Navy history

(5,000 meters) and outdoor (10,000 meters) track. Michael Ryan earned similar honors during the 1999 indoor track season for his 4:01.57 time in the mile, and Erik Schmidt took fifth place in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March 2003. Cantello’s most decorated runner was Ron Harris (’87), who was successful under Coach Cantello’s tutelage in both cross country and track and field. Harris garnered cross country All-America honors in 1985 and track and field All-America laurels in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter run in 1987. Harris went on to qualify for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000-meter run. In addition, two of Navy’s distance relay teams were ranked among the nation’s top 15 during the 1999 outdoor campaign. The mile relay team of Eric Adams, John McNamara, Ryan Runge and Ryan was fourth in the nation, while the distance medley relay team of Adams, Torrance Chaplin, Karlton Holston and Ryan was nationally ranked, as well. As a result of his teams’ success, Cantello has been amply recognized, including being named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year three times (1984, `85, `92 and ‘16) and has been Patriot League Coach of the Year each of the last four seasons. In 1997, the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Cantello the Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for a coach or faculty member who did the most for the physical development of the Midshipmen in physical education. Cantello also received the inaugural Tom Hamilton Teaching/Coaching Award, as voted by his peers that same year. Cantello, a 1955 La Salle graduate, has spent over a half century at the Naval Academy and has served as the head coach of the men’s cross country team for the last 49 years. Over the course of his tenure, Cantello’s teams have beaten the archrival Black Knights 37 times in cross country and 12 times in track and field with him as the head coach (1981-1988). Cantello also has guided the Mids to eight Patriot League titles in the last nine seasons. Including his years as an assistant coach for the track and field team (1968-1980, 1989-pres.), he has accrued 98 wins versus Army. From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, guiding Navy’s men’s indoor and outdoor track squads while maintaining his cross country duties. As Navy’s head track coach, Cantello led the Mids to a 67-9-1 dual meet record. During the 1986-87 academic year, his combined record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field was a remarkable 23-1. Cantello’s all-time head coaching record in cross country, indoor and outdoor track is 322-82-2, good for a .796 career winning percentage. Cantello was a two-time All-American in the javelin throw. In 2009, he was inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame for becoming the first three-time winner in the javelin throw at the famed event. He was also enshrined as a charter member of La Salle’s Hall of Athletes in 1961 and in the spring of 2012, Cantello was inducted in the inaugural class of the Middle Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. A former world-class competitor in the javelin, Cantello once held every national and international record in the event. In 1959, he set a world record in the javelin and competed for the U.S. Olympic Team the following year in the 1960 Games in Rome. In 1964, Sport magazine named Cantello to its all-time track & field team and voted him the world’s greatest competitor in the javelin. Cantello was inducted to the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame on December 2013. Cantello and his late wife, Jackie, are the parents of three adult children - Karla McMahon, Karen O’Kane and the late Albert Jr. - and seven grandchildren.

Season Outlook

2017 MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

The Navy men’s cross country team will begin its 2017 campaign this Saturday morning with competition at the Salisbury Fall Classic. The meet is scheduled to kick off at 9:45 a.m. The Mids are coming off one of the most successful seasons in recent history as the program won its eighth Patriot League title in October before finishing second at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship and qualifying for the program’s 11th NCAA Championship appearance. At the 2016 NCAA Championship meet in Terre Haute, Ind., the Mids finished with a 26th-place result. While deep senior class led the team in 2016, the Mids will look at five high-level contributors to return and lead the way, as a strong group of freshmen athletes will look to acclimate themselves to collegiate action. Senior captain Cory Donley has been and will continue to be looked upon to lead Navy’s team both in and out of competition. As a junior last season, Donley raced eight times and finished as one of the Mids’ top-seven runners in all eight events. His best results, included a fourthplace finish at the Army-Navy Star Meet and fifth-place times at the Navy Invitational and Cappy Anderson Invite. He is joined in the senior class by Gabriel Collison, who competed in three events last fall highlighted by an eighth-place finish in the Star Meet. Josh Hanna rounds out Navy’s three-man senior class. Hanna appeared in three early-season races for the Mids and finished sixth at the Cappy Anderson Invite in 2016. The sophomore duo of Jake Brophy and Kevin Murray showed off their potential in 2016 immediately as they came out of the gate at the Salisbury Fall Classic and finished back-to-back with Brophy coming in first and Murray second. Brophy competed with great consistency throughout his freshman season and was amongst Navy’s top-five finishers in seven of eight events. In consecutive events, the Star Meet and Patriot League Championship, he recorded top-10 overall results with a third versus Army and a ninth at the conference meet. Following the season-opening Salisbury Classic, Murray competed four more times last fall with a ninth-place finish versus Army and an 11th-place result at the Patriot League Championship leading the way. For their top-14 results at the Patriot League Championship, Brophy, Murray and Donley all garnered Second Team All-Patriot League nods last fall. The Navy squad welcomes a host of newcomers to the program in 2017 with Quinn Schneider and Ben Cracraft leading the way this preseason. Schneider joins the Mids after a standout cross country and track & field career in the Charlotte, N.C. area. In North Carolina state championship action, he won both the 2015 and 2016 NCISAA 1A State Championships after finishing runner-up in 2014 as a sophomore. Cracraft honed his skills in Michigan and garnered all-conference, all-county and all-state honors following his junior and senior seasons.

Willie McCool Monument

The Willie McCool Monument on the USNA Cross Country Course memorializes Navy’s 1982 team captain that was one of seven astronauts that perished in Space Shuttle Columbia during re-entry on February 1, 2003. The last audible transmission received from Columbia before the tragedy occurred at 8:59 a.m. that morning - 16 minutes from the shuttle’s scheduled landing at 9:15 a.m. On Navy’s home course during his senior season in 1982, McCool recorded a career-best time of 24:27 - which stands as the 28th-fastest Navy time in course history. The monument is located where he would have been 8:27 into the race during that day - 16 minutes from home. McCool, 41, was a former test pilot in the Navy and served that role for the STS-107 (Space Shuttle Columbia). He received a bachelor of science degreee in applied science from the U.S Naval Academy in 1983, a master of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1985, and a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1992. McCool, as a member of the Blue Team, worked with many experiments and was also responsible for maneuvering Columbia as part of several experiments mounted in the shuttle’s payload bay. Selected by NASA in 1996, McCool was making his first spaceflight.

Patriot League

H Navy women’s lacrosse became the fourth Patriot League team in any sport to advance to the semifinals of an NCAA Championship as the Mids defeated No. 7 Penn, UMass and No. 2 North Carolina in their tournament play.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its studentathletes to be leaders in society. During the 2016-17 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: H 97 Patriot League teams (45.8 percent of League teams) earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with a Patriot League record 84 squads earning perfect scores. H The League’s 93 percent graduation success rate (GSR) is the best mark in the nation for the second-consecutive year. Nine schools were at 90 percent or higher. All 10 member institutions exceeded the national GSR of 86 percent. In addition the League’s 86 percent Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) places it as the national leader for the fourth-consecutive year. H American’s Natalie Konerth (Field Hockey) and Navy’s Ryan Bailey (Men’s Swimming) were named the Corvias Patriot League Female and Male ScholarAthlete of the Year honorees, respectively.
