Larry Bock

2013 NAVY VOLLEYBALL

Third Season

Larry Bock, who has accrued more victories than any other volleyball coach in NCAA history, enters his third season as the head coach of the Mids in the fall of 2013. Bock arrived at Navy having compiled an overall record of 1,352-283-4 (82.6%) in 40 seasons as a collegiate volleyball head coach. That tally included a mark of 1,252-192 (86.7%) in 34 seasons as the head coach of the women’s program at Juniata and a mark of 100-91-4 (52.3%) in six years as the head coach of the Juniata men’s team. Including his two years at Navy, he has compiled an overall record of 1,369-321-4 (80.9%) and a women’s mark of 1,269-230 (84.7%). Bock has won 130 more matches than the coach with the next highest tally of victories, and has recorded 100 more wins than the second-place coach on the women’s side of the sport. Additionally, the winning percentage for his women’s teams ranks seventh among all NCAA coaches who have at least 10 seasons of experience. His impact on the Navy program was felt during the 2012 season, his second on The Yard. After posting just one Patriot League victory in each of the two previous years, the Mids finished the season with a 7-7 record and placed fifth in the league. That six-win increase from one season to the next is the largest one-year improvement for victories in league history. Additionally, Navy’s placement in the league was the highest for the Mids since tying for fifth place in 2008. Navy also stopped a 15-match losing streak in league road outings by finishing the year with a 3-4 mark in league matches played away from Annapolis. Additionally, Navy recorded 11 overall wins on the season after having totaled 13 wins the two previous years. Helping the Mids to their improved record was their winning five home matches on the year after Navy had won a total of six home matches in the previous two seasons combined, as well as winning three true road matches on the season after having posted a 3-20 mark in road matches played over the course of the 2010-11 seasons. Juniata’s women’s teams won at least 30 matches in each of the last 31 seasons and surpassed 40 victories on 10 different occasions during this span. The Eagles compiled a staggering 358-14 record (96.2%) against conference foes, and last dropped a match against a conference opponent in 1983. And while Juniata competes on the NCAA’s Division III level, Bock’s teams posted a 67-23 record against NCAA Division I programs during his tenure at the school. Bock guided the Eagles to each of the 30 NCAA D-III Tournaments that have been contested. Juniata won NCAA titles in 2004 and 2006, appeared in a total of eight national championship matches and advanced to the semifinal match of the national tournament in 14 of his last 15 seasons and 25 times in all. Juniata posted a 94-36 record in the NCAA Tournament under Bock. Individually, Bock’s players garnered 65 All-America certificates, four American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player-of-the-Year awards and one National Rookie-of-the-Year laurel. Additionally, five Juniata players received College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America accolades, two were selected as the organization’s Academic All-American of the Year and two received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. On the men’s side, Juniata won a trio of Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association divisional titles under Bock, who himself was tabbed as the EIVA D-III Coach of the Year in both 1993 and ‘94. Bock has received nearly every possible coaching award available over the course of his career He has been tabbed as the AVCA (D-III) National Coach of the Year five times and as the organization’s region coach of the year on nine occasions. Bock also was a member of the AVCA’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class (2003), was elected as one of the two NCAA Silver Anniversary (D-III) Team Head Coaches (2006), received the AVCA Founders Award for service to the sport (2000), garnered

What Others Are Saying About Larry Bock

“Navy has scored a remarkable coup. Larry is without a doubt one of the most successful and talented coaches I know. His players rave about the experience they had playing for him. He is the complete package as a coach; he can recruit, train a team and can relate well with the players. He is exceptional during matches and is passionate about the sport. I am a big fan and admirer.” –– Doug Beal, head coach of the 1984 and 2008 U.S. Olympic Men’s Volleyball Team; Current CEO of USA Volleyball “Larry’s record speaks for itself. With all the great coaches in our profession, the fact that he has accumulated more victories than anyone speaks volumes of his coaching abilities.” –– Mary Wise, head coach, Florida women’s volleyball “His 34 years of experience, over 1,300 career wins and two NCAA titles speak for themselves. Larry Bock has a gift for motivating and empowering his athletes. As a player, I wanted to work hard for him because of the example he set. He consistently creates challenging and rewarding environments for his players to develop as athletes and people. Navy is privileged to work with Larry, a coach with a great combination of intellect, integrity, and professionalism.” –– Melissa Myers, head coach, Illinois State; former Juniata player “Larry Bock is one of the nation’s finest people and one of nation’s elite coaches. This move will enhance everything the Navy volleyball program is about and gives Coach Bock another avenue to share his gifts with these volleyball athletes and the entire Navy Athletic Department. I wish all the successes that the Navy volleyball program can achieve with Coach Bock guiding these women.” –– Don Flora, head coach, Texas Tech women’s volleyball “Larry’s record speaks for itself. He is recognized as one of the all-time great coaches in all NCAA divisions. It is amazing the level of success his Juniata teams have always had under him. But what stands out most for myself with Larry is the class and graciousness he has about himself. He sets the perfect example and his players follow that. He is the same person with opposing coaches after wins as he is after losses. Larry has many great years of coaching at an elite level left in him and the success he had at Juniata will follow him to Navy.” –– Julie Jenkins, head coach, Trinity University women’s volleyball “The U.S. Naval Academy women’s volleyball program has one of the bestkept secrets of volleyball in their midst. Larry Bock has the volleyball coaching experience and background most programs only hope they can attract. His ability to get the most out of his student-athletes will find certain footing in their collegiate careers and beyond. Volleyball with Larry is a journey for team excellence and as the years pass those who take that journey also find the blueprints for individual excellence as well.” –– Mark Pavlik, head coach, Penn State men’s volleyball

2012 Season Notes *Navy’s 11 wins were the most for the Mids since the 2008 season. It also nearly matched the combined number of wins for Navy during the 2010 and 2011 seasons (13).

*The Mids won four league matches by the score of 3-0. Navy had won just one league match by the score of 3-0 over the last four seasons.

*Navy’s 7-7 record in league play was Navy’s first with at least a .500 record since 2007. Navy had won just one match in each of the last two league seasons and had a total of five wins in league play over the previous three seasons.

*Navy was 3-1 in league matches that were extended to five sets. Navy was 3-5 in five-set league matches over the last three seasons.

*Navy improved its league win total by six matches from the 2011 season. That was the largest one-season increase in league victories by any team in league history. *Navy placed fifth (alone) in the Patriot League standings, which was its highest finish since tying for fifth place in 2008. *Navy posted a 4-3 record in league home matches. This was after winning a total of three league home matches over the previous three seasons. *Navy compiled a 3-4 record in league matches played away from home (includes one league neutral site match). Navy entered the season having lost 15-straight league road matches. *Navy won the season series from three opponents (Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lafayette). The Mids had not won a season series from any opponent over the last three seasons, and last won the season series from as many as three teams in 2007.

*Navy was 5-5 in all home matches after posting a 6-27 record at home over the last three years.

*Fortner was named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team for the second-straight season. *Karika was named as the league’s rookie of the week twice and Katie Sylakowski received the award once. Karika was the first Mid to receive the honor twice in a season since 2005 and the three awards garnered by the Mids were the most earned in a season by the program (established 2001). *Karika led the Patriot League in assists (10.38 aps). She was the first Mid to do so since 1998 and the fourth overall.

*Navy had a 3-5 record in true road matches after posting a 3-20 record in true road matches the last two seasons combined.

*Alex Cassel led the Patriot League in hitting percentage (.323). She was the first Mid to do so since 2005 and the third in all.

*Alex Karika was selected as the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year. She was the first Mid to win the award since 2003 and the sixth Mid to do so in all.

*Fortner ranked second in the league in kills per set (3.59 kps) for league matches. That was the highest ranking by a Mid since 2007.

*Karika also earned Second-Team All-Patriot League honors, becoming the first Mid to earn all-league honors as a freshman since 2001.

*Christy Rapp ranked third in the Patriot League in digs per set (4.13 dps). That was the highest ranking by a Mid since 1996. That mark also was a new Navy single-season standard during the rally scoring era.

*Erin Fortner earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors for the first time in her career. She was the first Mid to be named first team all league since 2007. *Karika’s and Fortner’s laurels marked the first time since 2005 that two Mids earned all-league recognition in the same season.

*Fortner, Kelsey Owen, Rapp, J.B. Loomis, Alex Cassel, Eleanor Derouin, Jamie Francona and Case Trimble all were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

2013 NAVY VOLLEYBALL

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 80 percent of its teams posting an APR score of 985 or higher in the most recent data, and 71 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2012-13 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

Stephen Cooksey earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors following Navy’s title at the Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships.

I The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball and baseball APR. I 71 Patriot League teams, and 74 from full-member institutions, received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for finishing in the top-10 percent of their sport in APR data. I Lehigh repeated as the top men’s program in the Presidents’ Cup standings, while Navy once again led the way on the women’s side. I Bucknell’s Leonard Joseph and Navy’s Zack Duncavage each earned Second-Team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. I Navy’s Annie-Norah Beveridge and American’s Mark Allen ran at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. I Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo was up for the Tewaaraton award in women’s lacrosse, and became the first Patriot Leaguer since 1997 to be named an All-American by the IWLCA. I Navy became the first Patriot League team to win an NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament game when it beat Monmouth in the first round on May 10. I Six Patriot League student-athletes were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships: Navy’s Chris Galvin (Track and Field), Laura Gorinski (Swimming and Diving), Brigid Byrne (Track and Field) and Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s Lacrosse); Fordham’s Patrick Murray (Football) and Bucknell’s Christian Treat (Swimming and Diving). I Army’s Brendan Buckley and Navy’s Brigid Byrne were named the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, respectively. I 14 student-athletes from Patriot League sports earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team selections for Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s At-Large), Brigid Byrne (Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country) and Chris Galvin (Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country); Colgate’s Chris Looney (Football) and Army’s Brendan Buckley (Men’s At-Large).
