I I I 2016-17 navy WOMEN'S ROWING I I I Rowing History The women’s crew program continues to grow and build upon its winning tradition at the Naval Academy. The sport made its initial appearance at Navy in the spring of 1978, during the second year women were allowed to attend the Academy. In that first spring, the Midshipmen competed on the junior varsity level, racing Washington College, Trinity of Washington, D.C., and Virginia’s second varsity boats, winning all three regattas. Women’s crew was elevated to varsity status the following year and the Midshipmen won two varsity races while racing at the Division II level. In 1980, in only its second year of varsity status, Navy competed in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, the largest crew regatta on the East Coast. The varsity eight was third in the Grand Finals and the second varsity also earned a third-place finish. The following year, the Midshipmen women raced in the well-known San Diego Crew Classic and completed the season with a 6-2 record. The next three seasons found the women showcasing an 18-3 record, including an unbeaten 9-0 mark in 1984. In 1987, the Midshipmen won the first of six-consecutive Seitz Trophies for outstanding performances by women’s crews at the Dad Vail Regatta. It was in 1992, however, that the Mids enjoyed one of its grandest moments ever in Navy women’s crew history — the Midshipmen not only won the Seitz Trophy at the Dad Vail, but the varsity eight captured a gold medal for the first time and the second varsity eight won its fifth-straight gold medal. The gold medal by the varsity eight allowed the women to claim the Division II national championship in the sport. In 1991 and ‘92, the assistant coach for the women’s crew team was Lt. Cmdr. Wendy Lawrence, who was a two-year letterwinner in the sport in its fledgling years at Navy. Capt. Lawrence became an astronaut in the U.S. space program. In 1994, the Navy women won the Anita DeFrantz Trophy for overall performance by women’s crews at the second annual Champion International Collegiate Regatta. In this event, the varsity eight was first, and with it the honor of being the national champion in women’s crew on the Division II level. The first novice and second novice boats also earned first place showings. It was the second time in three years that the varsity eight was recognized as national champions. The program took a step up in 1995 by moving to the Division I level and joining the Eastern Sprints League. Racing in the nation’s strongest conference, Navy has steadily improved its performance. In its initial season of 1995, the varsity eight placed fifth in the Grand Finals and the second varsity was second at the Champion International Collegiate Rowing Championships. The 1998-99 season was Navy’s best season

12

in the Eastern Association Women’s Rowing Conference (EAWRC). Despite a slow start, the crew posted a 13-7 spring record. A highlight of the season came when the novice four notched the first Eastern Sprints medal earned in Navy rowing history, capturing a silver medal. Posting victories over conference rivals Georgetown, George Washington and Pennsylvania, the varsity eight finished the season by making the petite final of the Eastern Sprints. The 2005 season marked the first time women’s crew was sponsored by the Patriot League, with Navy sweeping the three boat titles and the overall team championship. In addition, Mike Hughes was selected as the league’s coach of the year, with Navy’s varsity boat garnering boat-of-theyear honors. Hughes would also be named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2013. The Midshipmen earned their second Patriot League title in 2013 on the strength of titles in the varsity eight and second varsity eight races. Outscoring the runner-up, Bucknell, 35-to-29, Navy received the Patriot League’s first-ever automatic bid in the NCAA Championships. Racing at the NCAAs in Indianapolis, Ind., the Mids finished 20th overall and saw its varsity four boat win the D Final over Boston University, Rhode Island and Marist College. Patriot League title number three came in 2015 during Hughes’ last season as the Mids’ head coach. Navy swept the three-race slate of championship action to earn the 2015 Patriot League Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The Mids won the varsity four and second varsity eight races before pulling out a come-from-behind victory over Bucknell in the varsity eight event to win the title. In recognition of their respective results Hughes was named the P.L. Coach of the Year and the varsity eight was named the P.L. Boat of the Year. At the 2015 NCAA’s in Sacramento, Calif., the Mids finished 21st overall with their varsity four boat leading the way and finishing 17th in its event. Navy’s run of strong performances at the Patriot League Championship continued in 2016 under first-year head coach Joe Schlosberg. The former associate head coach at Notre Dame, Schlosberg’s 2016 Navy squad won the Patriot League title for the fourth time in program history as the Mids’ edged the Boston University Terriers, 49-48 in the final standings. Navy won the varsity four race and came in second in both the first and second varsity eight competitions to claim the one-point victory and automatic bid in the the NCAA Championships. At the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, the Mids turned in their highest-ever finish as they recorded 35 points to rank 19th overall. Navy’s varsity four finished 16th in its respective event, while the second varsity eight crew took 19th place. The women’s crew team has a history of producing world-class athletes in the sport. Former

volunteer assistant coach Karin Hughes (’91), was a member of the 1997 National Rowing Team and earned a silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Laurie Coffey (’99), represented the U.S. at the Under-23 World Championship and earned a gold medal at the 1999 World Military Games in Zagreb, Croatia, in the women’s double. Most recently, Katherine Ashton (‘14) competed at the 2013 World Rowing U-23 Championships in Linz, Austria. Ashton and the American squad concluded competition with a second-place finish in the B Final behind Romania.

I I I 2016-17 navy WOMEN'S ROWING I I I The Patriot League Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2015-16 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: H 88 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for

ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 76 squads earning perfect scores.

H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public

Recognition Awards, and matched the Ivy League for the highest percentage of teams earning the honor at 45 percent.

H 89 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national average

in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate.

H 12 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition,

including first-team accolades for Bucknell’s Matt DelMauro (Football) and Navy’s Ellen Bradford (Women’s Swimming and Diving) and Rebecca Greenberg (Women’s Rowing).

H Three Patriot League student-athletes earned NCAA Postgraduate

Scholarships, with the group including Bradford and Sam Peckham (Men’s Cross Country) from Navy and Veronica Toro (Women’s Rowing) from MIT.

H Bradford and Loyola’s Franz Rassman (Men’s Basketball) were named

the Corvias Patriot League Female and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

H 43 Patriot League student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic

All-District recognition, an increase of nine honorees over last season.

H There were 2,816 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor

Roll in 2015-16, including 258 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

H Boston University’s Emily Tillo (Women’s Golf) and Navy’s Patrick Keena

(Men’s Lacrosse) were named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winners.

H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third straight

time and fourth in the last five years.

H The Mids also won the men’s title while Bucknell claimed the women’s

crown.

H Navy beat Yale in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament

as two Patriot League squads won games in the same year for the first time.

H Also winning NCAA Tournament contests in 2015-16 were American

volleyball, Boston University women’s soccer, Holy Cross men’s basketball, Navy baseball and Boston University field hockey, with the 10 postseason victories setting a record for the Patriot League in a single season.

18

H Twenty-three Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans, with first-team

status for Boston University’s Sofi Laurito (Field Hockey), Fordham’s Chase Edmonds and Stephen Hodge (Football) and Navy’s Jay Stell (Men’s Outdoor Track and Field).

H Six Patriot Leaguers were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
