2012 NAVY WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Karen Boyle

Head Coach • 26th Season 26th season at Navy Bowling Green ‘79 Karen Boyle made her 25th season at Navy a memorable one as she guided the Mids to their third Patriot League title in the last five years, as well as a victory over Army. Boyle, who was the Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2011, has enjoyed much success during her 25 years as Navy’s head coach, guiding her teams to a 123-21 (.854) mark over her career. The Mids got out to a fast start in 2011, winning each of their first three meets, including the Salty Dog Invitational in Annapolis. After defeating Army, 15-31, at West Point, two weeks later Navy claimed its third Patriot League title by holding off second-place Bucknell by three points. In addition to the success of the team, senior Jess Palacio had one of the best years ever by a Navy cross country runner. Palacio placed first in four meets, including at the Patriot League Championship where she became the first Mid since 2008 to win the individual crown. After earning her second consecutive All-Mid Atlantic Region honor, Palacio earned a bid to the NCAA Championships. In 2010, Boyle guided the Mids to a pair of invitational titles as Navy finished first at both the Lehigh Invitational and the Great American Festival. Palacio won four individual titles in the fall of ‘10 and became a first-team All-Patriot League honoree by placing third at the conference championship. During Boyle’s tenure, six Navy runners have competed at the NCAA Division I Championship. Boyle’s first national championship qualifier came in 1992 with Kerry O’Neill, followed by Jackie Hayes in 1995, Rebecca Cline in 1997, Melissa Foon in 2000, Amy Watson in 2008 and Palacio in 2011. In 2007, Boyle led Navy to a share of its first Patriot League championship, before claiming the title outright in 2008. Boyle was named Patriot League Coach of the Year on both occasions. Boyle has led the Mids to significant honors on both the Division II (1987-1990) and Division I (1991-present) levels. In Navy’s last-four years of Division II competition, Boyle coached the Mids to three-straight undefeated seasons and four-consecutive top-five finishes in the NCAA Division II Championship, with five runners garnering All-America honors. Boyle was named Eastern Region Coach of the Year in three-straight seasons (1988-90). Boyle guided the program into the Division I ranks in 1991, and the Mids immediately achieved success by capturing the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. In 1997 and 2007, Boyle was named Navy’s Fall Coach of the Year after she led Navy to an undefeated season. As a coach with the track team, she guided Marty Shue to a title in the indoor 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Championship. In 1995, Boyle was selected as team leader for the USA Ekiden International Marathon in Beijing, China. She was also selected to help rewrite the level I track & field certification curriculum at the USA Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1999, she received her C.S.C.S. certification as a nationally accredited certified strength and conditioning specialist. The summer of 2001 saw Boyle serve as an assistant track & field coach for Team USA in the Deaf Track & Field World Games, held in Rome, Italy. Boyle, a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green, received her degree in physical education and earned her master’s degree in athletic administration and recreation from her alma mater in 1982. Athletically, she competed in both track and lacrosse, specializing in the 400 and 4x400-meter relay on the track and was a leading scorer for the Falcons’ lacrosse squad. Her coaching career began at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where she coached the women’s cross country and track & field teams from 1984-86, developing two national champions and nine All-Americans. Boyle is a tenured professor in the Naval Academy’s Physical Education Department, teaching personal conditioning, rock climbing, kayaking and triathlon training. Boyle also participates in road races and triathlons. Administratively, Boyle served as the president of the NCAA Division I Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (1999-2001), as well as a committee member on the USA Track & Field Coaching Education Board and the United States Track Coaches Association Long Distance Advisory Board.

2012 NAVY WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Season Outlook After capturing its second Patriot League crown in the last four seasons in 2011, the Navy women’s cross country team returns again poised take the top spot in the conference. In addition to having a roster full of experience, the Mids add one of their most-talented groups of incoming freshmen in coach Karen Boyle’s tenure at Navy. “I think we have one of the deepest and most talented teams since I’ve been here,” said Boyle, who is entering her 26th season at the helm of the women’s cross country program. “We return a lot of high-caliber runners and have a great group of freshmen.” Senior Brigid Byrne returns for her final year and the 2012 captain and is the unquestioned leader of the team. The Vienna, Va., native is a two-time all-conference performer and has appeared in more meets (23) than anyone on the roster. Last season she finished in the top 10 in five of the eight meets in which she competed. “Brigid is doing a great job as captain,” said Boyle. “She’s very effective and takes the role very seriously. Brigid has always been in good shape, but she’s in even better shape this season.” A trio of juniors in Samantha Carl, Mary Jordan and Rachel Slater impressed Boyle in early season practice and could provide additional leadership in a thin group of upperclassmen. Carl was limited to just one meet last season while Jordan appeared in three races. “Samantha and Mary are two runners that have made some of the biggest strides since last season,” said Boyle. “Rachel had a great offseason as well and will definitely contribute.” While the Mids will certainly rely on the juniors and seniors, the core of the team lies in the sophomore class. With six returners that appeared in at least six meets last season, the group of second-year runners brings far more experience than your average sophomore class. Annie-Norah Beveridge and Shannon Cuthbert appeared in all eight meets last season, placed in Navy’s top five on all eight occasions and combined for nine top-10 finishes. Beveridge was the top-finishing freshman at the Patriot League Championships, earning Rookie of the Meet honors while garnering second-team all-conference accolades. Both Beveridge and Cuthbert were named Patriot League Rookies of the Week twice in 2011. The only other Mid to compete in eight races last season was Christina Blair, and the Peninsula, Ohio, native finished in Navy’s top seven in every meet. The depth of the sophomore class continues with Maria Arnone and Emily Jensen. Arnone had three top-20 finishes last season and looks poised to up that number this season after impressing in preseason practice. “Maria was a factor last year, but will be more of one this year. She has adjusted since her plebe year and had a really good summer of training,” said Boyle. “For Emily, the longer the race, the better she runs.” Nikki Funkhauser rounds out the list of six sophomores that competed in at least six meets last season. Navy’s youth movement is bolstered by its exceptionally strong incoming freshman class, which includes several runners that could make an immediate impact. The 15-member class includes four state champions and more than a handful of runners that consistently post sub-five minute mile times. “This group of plebes has been very impressive early on and we’re looking forward to their contributions this season,” said Boyle. Kelley Robinson is a three-time Colorado cross country state champion while Chloe Whitworth captured a cross country state title in Georgia. Kathryn Quandt is a Texas state champion and Dale Lescher was part of

4x800 relay team that won the Virginia state title. Navy will be tested from the outset in 2012 and after traveling to Hamilton, N.Y., for the season-opening invite at Colgate University, the Mids will head to University Park, Pa., on Sept. 8 for the Harry Groves Invitational, which draws some of the region’s best programs. Navy will appear at home twice, the first meet will take place Sept. 15 when it looks to defend its Salty Dog Invitational title on the cross country course at the USNA Golf Club. The Mids will put their talents to the test the next two weekends with a pair of meets against top competition. The Toledo Bubble Buster on Sept. 21 and then the Paul Short Run on Sept. 28 will both draw some of the nation’s top teams. “We’re excited about our schedule because we’ll be able to test ourselves against some of the top programs in the country on quite a few occasions,” Boyle said. Navy will look to claim its second consecutive Star when it hosts Army on Oct. 13 in Annapolis. The team will then have two weeks off before it returns to Hamilton, N.Y., to defend its Patriot League title as the 2012 conference championship will take place on Oct. 27. The 2012 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship will be held in University Park, Pa., on Nov. 9. The top-two finishing teams from each of the nation’s nine regions will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. “Our goal is to, obviously, defend our Patriot League title, beat Army and be represented at the national championships,” Boyle said. “If we stay healthy and compete at a high level, I think we have a good shot at achieving our goals. There are over 330 Division I women’s cross country programs and we’d like to be one of the top-40 teams.”

2012 NAVY WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores.
