2018 NAVY WOmen's CROSS COUNTRY Karen Boyle

Year-by-Year at Navy

Head Coach • 32nd Season 32nd season at Navy Bowling Green ‘79 Boyle is in her 32nd year at the helm of the Navy women’s cross country team, she has led the Mids to three Patriot League Championships in the last 10 seasons. The Mids posted a 6-1 record in 2017. In 31 years as Navy’s head coach, Boyle has guided her teams to a 158-23 (.873) record. During Boyle’s tenure, seven Navy runners have competed at the NCAA Division I Championship. Boyle’s first national championship qualifier came in 1992 with Kerry O’Neill, followed by Jackie Hayes (1995), Rebecca Cline (1997), Melissa Foon (2000), Amy Watson (2008), Jess Palacio (2011) and Annie-Norah Beveridge (2012). Navy’s 2017 season was highlighted by a 6-0 showing at the Mount St. Mary’s 5K Duals and a trio of Mids earning All-Patriot League honors as Ali Valenti (1st), Emily Craig (2nd) and Grace West (2nd) all garnered accolades at the Patriot League Championship. In 2016, Boyle and the Mids collected their sixth-straight victory over Army for an N-Star with dominant 20-42 decision in Annapolis. The 22-point win was the largest in the meet since 2008 (15-48, Navy). In the postseason, Navy finished fourth in the Patriot League Championship. Continuing its dominance over Army, Boyle guided Navy to its fifth-straight N-Star victory over the Black Knights, 23-35, in West Point during the 2015 season. The Mids followed up with a strong performance in the Patriot League Championship, finishing as the runner ups to Bucknell. Boyle led Navy to its fourth consecutive victory over archrival Army, 26-29, in 2014. The Mids placed fourth in the Patriot League Championship. Navy finished first in three meets in 2013 season, including again winning annual Salty Dog Invitational. After defeating Army, 24-31, the Mids fell short of their third consecutive Patriot League title, finishing third. For the second consecutive year in 2012, a Mid claimed the league’s individual crown as Annie-Norah Beveridge took first place overall. Like Patriot League champion Jess Palacio in 2011, Beveridge also went on to earn All-MidAtlantic Region honors and receive a bid to compete in the NCAA Championships. In 2011 Jess Palacio had one of the best years ever by a Navy cross country runner. She placed first in four meets, including at the Patriot League Championship, and earned her second consecutive All-Mid Atlantic Region honor. Boyle guided the Mids to a pair of invitational titles in 2010 as Navy finished first at both the Lehigh Invitational and the Great American Festival. Palacio won four individual titles in the fall of `10 and became a first-team All-Patriot League honoree by placing third at the conference championship. In 2007, Boyle led Navy to a share of its first Patriot League championship, before claiming the title outright in 2008. Boyle was named Patriot League Coach of the Year on both occasions. Boyle has led the Mids to significant honors on both the Division II (1987-1990) and Division I (1991-present) levels. In Navy’s last-four years of Division II competition, Boyle coached the Mids to three-straight undefeated seasons and four-consecutive top-five finishes in the NCAA Division II Championship, with five runners garnering All-America honors. Boyle was named Eastern Region Coach of the Year in three-straight seasons (1988-90). Boyle guided the program into the Division I ranks in 1991, and the Mids immediately achieved success by capturing the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. In 1997 and 2007, Boyle was named Navy’s Fall Coach of the Year after she led Navy to an undefeated season. As a coach with the track team, she guided Marty Shue to a title in the indoor 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Championship. In 1995, Boyle was selected as team leader for the USA Ekiden International Marathon in Beijing, China. She was also selected to help rewrite the level I track & field certification curriculum at the USA Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1999, she received her C.S.C.S. certification as a nationally accredited certified strength and conditioning specialist. The summer of 2001 saw Boyle serve as an assistant track & field coach for Team USA in the Deaf Track & Field World Games, held in Rome, Italy. Boyle, a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green, received her degree in physical education and earned her master’s degree in athletic administration and recreation from her alma mater in 1982. Athletically, she competed in both track and lacrosse, specializing in the 400 and 4x400-meter relay on the track and was a leading scorer for the Falcons’ lacrosse squad. Her coaching career began at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where she coached the women’s cross country and track & field teams from 1984-86, developing two national champions and nine All-Americans. Boyle is a tenured professor in the Naval Academy’s Physical Education Department, teaching personal conditioning, rock climbing, kayaking and triathlon training. Administratively, Boyle served as the president of the NCAA Division I Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (1999-2001), as well as a committee member on the USA Track & Field Coaching Education Board and the United States Track Coaches Association Long Distance Advisory Board.

2018 NAVY WOmeN'S CROSS COUNTRY Season Outlook The Navy women’s cross country team will kick off its 2018 campaign on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Bucknell Bison Open in Lewisburg, Pa. The Mids will be one of 10 teams competing in the women’s open race that starts at 5:30 p.m. Hosted on the Bucknell University Cross Country Course, the 4,000 meter race will be a good early-season gauge for Navy’s veteran-laden squad as Patriot League foes American, Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh and Loyola make up the majority of the field. Juniata, Lycoming, Penn and Susquehanna round out the rest of the programs scheduled to run at Friday’s meet. Graduating just three seniors from the 2017 team, head coach Karen Boyle and Navy will look to use that added year of experience to improve on last season’s third place result at the Patriot League Championships. The Mids’ 2018 roster consists of seven seniors, six juniors, eight sophomores and eight freshmen. After battling injuries for the second half of her 2017 season, senior Erin McDonnell is charged with leading the squad as the team captain. Navy brings back four of its top-seven runners from the 2017 Patriot League Championship competition in the form of senior Ali Valenti, junior Grace West, senior Rachel Fairbanks and junior Karla Mendoza. • Valenti, a 2017 First Team and 2015 Second Team All-Patriot League performer was the top finisher for Navy in each of the Mids’ final five races of the year. She placed second at the Army-Navy Star Meet and sixth (21:28.5) of 109 runners at the Patriot League Championship. • West, a 2017 Second Team All-Patriot honoree, was consistently amongst the top-three finishers for Navy meet-in, meet-out with a fourth-place result at the Star Meet and 11th-place finish (21:42.1) at the Patriot League Championship as highlights of her then-sophomore campaign in 2017.

• Similar to West, Fairbanks was a staple in the Mids’ scoring lineup as she competed in all seven events and placed as one of the top-five Mids in every competition. She crossed the finish line in 26th place at the 2017 Patriot League Championship with a time of 22:09.5. • Mendoza is an athlete who came on late for the Mids in 2017 as she first broke into the team’s top-six at the Paul Short Run in September before placing 36th overall, fifth on the team, at the league championship with a 22:24.9 result. The Mids will also lean on healthy performances from McDonnell and junior Claire Ostrowski this season. • Appearing in just two races for Navy in 2017 before being sidelined by injury, McDonnell will look to get back towards the top of Navy’s depth chart in 2018. Fully healthy in 2016 she led the team at the 2016 Army-Navy Star Meet, 2016 Patriot League Championship and 2016 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet. Going back to 2015, McDonnell was the Rookie of the Meet at the league championship for finishing seventh overall. • Ostrowski started her first collegiate cross country season off with a bang in 2017 as she turned in back-to-back top-two overall results at the Mount St. Mary’s Duals and Salty Dog Invitational. After competing purely in track as a freshman in 2016-17, Ostrowski seamlessly transferred her talents to cross country with an outright win (1st of 94) at the Mount St. Mary’s meet and second-place finish (2nd of 92) at the Salty Dog on Navy’s home course. Other returning runners, who placed amongst Navy’s top-seven finishers at different points in 2017 include, junior Caroline Ascherl, sophomore Josie Korenak, senior Gabrielle Perrin and junior Caitlin Schmitt.

2018 NAVY WOmeN'S CROSS COUNTRY Patriot League H Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the fifth-straight time and sixth in the last seven years. H Navy swept the men’s and women’s President’s Cup Titles, the 11th time the feat has been accomplished since 1990-91 and the first since Bucknell achieved the honor in 2010-11. Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2017-18 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: H 99 Patriot League teams (47.0 percent of League teams) earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with a Patriot League record 90 squads earning perfect scores. H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, and tied for the national lead with the Ivy League for the highest percentage of teams earning the honor at 47.0 percent. H The League’s 95 percent graduation success rate (GSR) is the second-best mark in the nation, finishing in the top-two in each year since the rating has been released in 2013. All 10 member schools were at 90 percent or higher, each exceeding the record-high national GSR of 87 percent. In addition the League’s 84 percent Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) places it as the national leader for the fifth-consecutive year. H Nine student-athletes earned Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Megan Hagerty (Women’s Soccer) and Stephen Born (Baseball), Army West Point’s Kenneth Brinson (Football) and Matt Ball (Baseball). Second team honorees include Navy’s Sydney Fortson (Women’s Soccer) and third team recipients include Bucknell’s Kendall Ham (Women’s Soccer), Navy’s Patricia Mattingly (Volleyball), Bucknell’s Jeff Gottesman (Baseball), Lehigh’s Conor Gaffney (Men’s Lacrosse). H 30 Patriot League student-athletes received Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. H There were a Patriot League record 3,011 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2017-18. H Navy’s Stephen Born (Baseball) and Shawn Anderson (Men’s Basketball) were both named to the Senior CLASS Award first team, while Army West Point’s Luke Morrison (Men’s Basketball) was placed on the second team.

H Navy and Loyola Maryland both qualified for the 2018 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships, marking the first time the League received two bids to the tournament. The Mids and Greyhounds both won their first-round matchups, with Navy advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to defending national champion No. 1 Maryland. H Also winning NCAA Tournament contests in 2017-18 were Colgate men’s soccer, Boston University field hockey, Army West Point baseball, combining with Navy and Loyola Maryland women’s lacrosse for seven tournament victories. H 24 Patriot Leaguers were All-America selections, with first-team status for Lehigh’s Dom Bragalone (Football), Boston University’s Ally Hammel (Field Hockey), Loyola Maryland’s Pat Spencer and Foster Huggins (Men’s Lacrosse) and Navy’s Jenna Collins (Women’s Lacrosse).
