SITE INFORMATION Wind direction and average temperature Bangkok has prevailing winds from the south-east in winter and from the south-west for most of the year. The site is flanked by a road and a canal, both of which have heavy traffic especially during rush hours. Average temperature year round is 28 째C Soil Condition Bangkok is situated on the flood plain and delta of the Chao Phraya River. The soil condition is clay and sandy clay. The soil is soft and has high water content and low shear strenght. The depth of the bedrock is still undetermined, but its level in the Bangkok area is known to vary between 400 m to 1,800 m depth. STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT The building is a silk weaving school. It is a silk weaving centre where children can visit and learn about traditional arts and crafts. Some of the spaces are: a small silk making factory, workshop and activity spaces for children, accommodation for 20 children (for holiday camp) etc. Silk weaving process is re-visited to make the tradition more appealing for children. For example, the silk weaving factory might look like a laboratory. The building will be a combination of tensile structure, timber and steel frame structure. The biggest space of the building is a round-shaped arts and crafts workshop space for kids. The roof uses the principal of the bicycle wheel roof and will span around 25-30 metres.

<<Inspirations Undulating roofscape. Perhaps continue the tensile language from the large span bicycle wheel roof, forming one continuous roofscape. Strings of silk maybe used as cladding materials in spaces where there is no need to be sealed off completely e.g. a garden path and veranda.

Funnel-shaped roof, like a chimney, to aid ventilation. Tensile roof based on the principle of the bicycle wheel.
