Amitis: Amitis beach is
located at the northeast coast of the island and 10km away from Chora, Naxos. It is the official beach of the Eggares and Galini villages, gaining popularity with beach goers who wish to stay away from the well known, organized and busy beaches of the island.
Orkos: Located between Plaka and Mikri Vigla, the white sand, private coves, pristine water, cedar trees and rock formations create an experience, unique only to Naxos.
Amitis
Orkos
Hawaii

Psili Ammos Moutsouna: Moutsouna is a coastal village at the east coast of Naxos, frequented mostly by the residents of Apeiranthos. It is covered with sand and pieces of emery with pristine clear water. The aerial system for transporting the emery or “enaerios as it is called locally ends here.
Panormos:
Panormos: Another hidden gem on the east coast of Naxos. A small sandy beach situated among palm trees. Follow a coastal road from Moutsouna to get there. (Distance from Chora, Naxos is 54 km). A favorite spot for boats in the summertime.
#philemafoodtours
Lyonas: It is located 40 km northeast of Chora, Naxos and 6 km from the village of Koronos. The beach here is covered with rocks, most of them black in color, because of the mineral emery found here. The crystal clear blue water with the rocky environment provides its guests with a unique experience.
Azalas: Located 37 km from Chora, Naxos and 7 km from Apeiranthos the beach of Azalas is covered with pebbles. Lots of fun in the waves when the winds blow from the north.

The Fragopoulos Della Rocca Tower at Kourounochori (14th century), believed to be the oldest tower in the Aegean.
The Historical Towers of Naxos
kiki Margariti
Visions of a different era
N
axos is privileged enough to have a significant number of towers on its territory. Such towers are also located on other islands, like Evia, Andros, Santorini, Leros, Chios, Lesvos and Crete, but in limited numbers compared to those in Naxos ... Historically the existence of 70 to 80 towers has been recorded here. Some 30 such towers are saved to the day located mainly at the more fertile areas of the island. It is an enormous density of fortress buildings considering the size of the island, a phenomenon that can only be compared to that of Mani. Yet, in Naxos’s case, unlike Mani, these were not built as war like structures but as fortified cottages, serving different roles for their owners: - They were recreation areas, mainly summer residences, for the owner and his family. - There were equipped with minimal defensive means to deal with relatively low threats. - They were financial centers for their landowners, who supervised the agricultural production, transportation, storage and processing of the grown crops from their surrounding territory. - The construction of these imposing and costly buildings conveyed a higher social status.
The construction of the towers in Naxos It is seemingly oxymoron, but in fact most of the towers of Naxos were not constructed during the Frankish rule (1207-1566), but during the Ottoman occupation (1566-1821). In fact, the 17th century is considered to be the “golden age” for the construction of these imposing tower villas. Few tower houses were built during the Latin occupation, all of them being under the ownership of the Duke of the Aegean, with the most significant example being that of the Fragopoulos Della Rocca Tower at Kourounochori (14th century), believed to be the oldest tower in the Aegean. However, after the gradual decline of feudalism, starting with the 1721 sultan decree and especially after the foundation of the Hellenic State, the phenomenon of tower construction on the island would gradually diminish and eventually disappear under the burden of new social, political and economic conditions that arose after the decline of the Latin element during the Ottoman domination, the rise of the middle class and the development of the Kingdom of Greece during which all local authority abuses were eliminated.
Tower of Dellaroka Built in Kourounohori inside the fertile valley of Melanes it is believed to be the oldest tower in Naxos. The tower, of a medieval architectural style, is in a dominant position but not in the center of the settlement and could have served as a final shelter in case of a siege of the village. It consists of three levels. The ground floor area was primarily used for storage and has no windows for defensive purposes, while the other two levels were used as a residence. “The tower was not only used as a home, but also for protection” says its current owner, Nikos Delarokas. The tower isn’t representative of all the towers in Naxos, as it is one of the few towers that was built during the Duchy of the Aegean. “The tower is no longer accessible and it was never inhabited systematically,” says Nikos Delarokas. Currently the tower is closed to the public and the costs for reconstruction and restoration are prohibitive.
1
Tower of Filoti The Barozzi Tower in Filoti is located in the center of the village in an estate once called “Paradise”. It was probably built in 1618, a date that is engraved on the building. The three-story tower on a 400-square-meter plot served as a residence, pottery factory, bakery and oil mill. There is no clear indication of who its first owner was. However, Georgeto Barozzi bought it in 1620 by Tzuane Tagari, who renovated it in 1718. “The feudal lord Barozzi was the builder. It was under the ownership of the Franks until 1921 when the grandmother of my wife, Styliani Demenopoulou, bought it. She was the first orthodox Greek owner, “says its current owner, Apostolos Psarras. In the pre-war period, the school of Filoti and the court house were housed there. His family has lived in the tower for the past 50 years. “Relative to the other towers it’s pretty small. Its floor plan is not more than 100 square meters,” he points out. In 1973, the process of restoration began, as it had suffered considerable deterioration over the years.
2
Greek State to the Bazaios family. “The restoration process is still ongoing, to this day. The church, for example, is still being restored. The building is very large but our approach is that of a mild continuous restoration rather than an aggressive one-time restoration,” says its current owner, Marios Vazaios. “The patina of time on the tower is fascinating to me. There’s no reason to cement it from top to bottom in order to ensure a comfortable living for yourself.” The historical section of the Bazaios Tower has been preserved while hosting events and exhibitions, remaining intact from other forms of modern habitation. “Deciding to dwell in an old monument can bring radical changes to the structure itself. I did not want to do that in the tower. In fact, the Bazaios Tower is inhabited more than any other because it welcomes more people than any other similar building, with no disruption at all.” The tower has been operating in its current state for the past 19 years.
Kokkou Tower This magnificent three-story mansion in Mesi Potamia belonged to the Orthodox Kokkon family. It is surrounded by a wonderful natural landscape and lush vegetation. Along with its dwellings and the fenced yard it occupies an area of 330 sq.m. The Kokkou Tower belongs to the category of villas. It is a three-story building with a watermill and a bakery. As shown by the coat of arms on the tower, its owners were the Kokki, a dominant Greek Orthodox family whose name is associated with the uprooting of the peasants against the feudal regime and the murder of the lord Barozzi.
Five towers of Naxos reveal their history
3
The tower belonged to Konstantinos Kokko, who lived there with his wife and daughter. After his murder by the Barozzi family, after the uprising of the peasants against the feudal regime, his widow remained in the tower. His daughter, Annusa, married, despite the will of her mother, the son of her father’s murderer, Jabati Barozzi, and stayed with him until her mother’s death at the Barozzi tower in Tragaia. With this marriage, the tower was passed over to the Barozzi family and remained in their possession for years until the Marulis family took possession of it. The watermill and the bakery operated until the 1960s. The Marouli family then sold the tower to Strato Foutakoglou in 2011. “The previous owner used it as a home. However, the children of the Marulis family moved to Athens and the tower was slowly deteriorating and was in danger of collapsing” says Mr. Foutakoglou. As soon as the required permits from the Byzantine Antiquities Directorate were issued, work began to support the tower and is now no longer in danger of collapse. However, it is not yet safe for visitors.

It is an imposing three-story tower in Chalki in a central part of the village, next to the Byzantine church of Panagia Protothroni.
Bazaios Tower
Near Sagri, at the Agiasos lowlands, the Bazaios Tower is a cultural center. Architecturally it belongs to the most characteristic group of monuments in Naxos, mainly built between the 14th and 19th centuries, the tower complexes. This tower-monastery was built around 1600. It originally served as the monastery of the Holy Cross until the start of the 19th century, when it was abandoned by the monks and became the property of the newly established Greek state. For many years it would host pottery makers who lived in the area. At the end of the 19th century, it was sold by the
4
According to a coat of arms on the lintel, the tower was restored in 1740 by Bernardo Barozzi. However, there is an earlier ownership inscription that reads FBZ 1678. This tower complex has many outbuildings, a well and an oil mill. Now days, the tower belongs to the Gratsia family, who took care to restore it in 2006. “This is a defensive tower and this fact is evidenced by the hanging bridge used to enter the tower” says Eleni Gratsia. Most of the towers of Naxos were used as dwellings. “The other towers of the island may resemble this one, but they were not defensive structures. At times of peace however, the Venetians transitioned the tower into an inhabitable space” she points out.

Music & Dance
F
easting, music and dance were always deeply embedded in the life of Naxians, being means of expressing feelings and emotions, antidotes to adversity and sorrow. Naxos’s music and dance tradition is deeply rooted and virtually impossible to trace, both in terms of time and location. Ancient artifacts from as far back as the First Cycladic period, depicting musical and dance illustrations stand as proof of Naxos’s uninterrupted and age old connection with dance and music. Despite the wider impact of modern day lifestyles and the invasion of new musical tastes, Naxos’s traditional form of dance music remains alive. Entire musical families – musicians, vocalists and lyricists – based in the villages of Kynidaros, Komiaki, Koronos, Apiranthos and Filoti, continue as worthy ambassadors of the age old music and dance traditions of their homeland. As for the Naxian’s dancing
ability, it is a talent developed from childhood and eventually mastered as a result of continual participation in local music and dance events. Naxos’s dance styles are: Syrtos (slow or fast), Ballos (slow or fast) a natural evolvement and result of various Syrto dances, Vlacha, Dirla, Vintzilleadistikos, Kotsatos and Nikindres. However, a variety of other styles originating outside Naxos, such as Kalamatianos, Paros’s Ageranos, tsifteteli, chasaposerviko and zeibekiko, are often danced at festivities on the island, as are foreign dances, including tango and waltz. Dance proceedings at celebrations begin with slow paced styles, gradually liven up with faster, bouncier styles, and eventually wind up with the Ballos, a style danced by couples, face to face. * Re: Naxos, A World to Experience, Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades
Festivals of Naxos A showcase of religious tradition along with local entertainment Embedded deep in Greek culture are the religious and celebratory festivities that take place in many parts of the country as well as Naxos. Once a year each village celebrates their Savior Saint and the religious ceremonies are followed with feasts of local traditional music, dance, food and drink. In the old days these feasts would take place in the countryside. Nowadays they are held at the main square of the village or “platsa” as it is called locally. Summer is here and these festivities take place everywhere giving the locals and the guests on the island a taste of traditional local entertainment. So, we invite you to join in the festivities, enjoy the local sounds from the violins, laouto, tsampouna and toumpaki, dance syrto, balo, vlaha, drink the local wine along with traditional Naxian fare and endless fun until the sun rise!

The Castle & Old Market of Naxos a “fairy tale” unfolds before your eyes
Naxos, is home to one of the more significant Medieval Castles of Greece where the legends of dukes, princesses, coats of arms, crusades, battles and secret passages are still evident to this day.
T
he Castle of Naxos was built in 1207 by the Venetian Marco Sanudo, who along with his comrades captured seventeen Aegean islands, proclaimed himself a Duke and appointed Naxos as the capital of his duchy.
T
he medieval settlement of the Castle was not only a place of residence but also an administrative, educational and religious center for the Venetians.
O
riginally twelve towers surrounded the Castle, of which only the circular tower of Krispi, later renamed the tower of Glezos, is preserved.
A
ccess to the Castle is gained through three entrances, most notable being Trani Porta located on the north side of the Castle where the original wooden gate is present to this day.
The southwest entrance, Paraporti leads to Nio Chorio, where once the poor villagers lived.
T
he Castle of Naxos is inhabited throughout the year and many shops welcome guests in the summer months. Most of the mansions still have the Coat of Arms of their original owners engraved on them. The current residents of these mansions have taken great care in maintaining and preserving their original state.
T
he picturesque Old Market neighborhood located at the “foot” of the Castle is a must destination for all visitors. Its cobbled streets are lined with shops, restaurants, cafes and bars making it one of the most beautiful and lively areas of the island.
