THE NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH AND FAMILY CENTER
18TH ANNUAL GALA AND AUCTION FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2021
presented by Comcast NBCUniversal
NAYA FAMILY CENTER Youth centered, family driven, elder guided. The Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) was founded in 1974 by parent and elder volunteers who were concerned about the low graduation rates of their youth. They organized after-school sports and tutoring activities to keep youth engaged in community and off the streets. Incorporating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1994, NAYA grew its programming to better serve the needs of the community. Now with a $14 million budget and staff of 130, NAYA offers a wide breadth of services for the region’s Native community. Our mission is to enhance the diverse strengths of our youth and families in partnership with the community through cultural identity and education. Impacting the lives of more than 10,000 individuals each year, we believe that traditional cultural values are integral to retaining sovereignty and building self-esteem. With the goal of providing stability for families and community members—moving them out of poverty and on the path to prosperity—NAYA’s wraparound programs serve everyone from babies to elders. Offered free of charge to participants, our five programmatic areas include our alternative high school, the Many Nations Academy, Youth and Education Services, Family Services, Housing and Stabilization Services, and Community Economic Development Services. NAYA’s services build upon our community’s strength, culture, and traditions and help families reclaim their heritage and their future.
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Welcome to the 18th Annual Native American Youth and Family Center Gala and Auction! I’m Paul Lumley, citizen of the Yakama Nation. It is wonderful to celebrate safely together at our second VIRTUAL Gala, as we grow awareness about Portland’s vibrant Native community and raise funds for NAYA. This year our theme is “Stronger Together.” Over the past year and a half in a pandemic, we have witnessed more and more, what and how much we can achieve when we come together to help Portland’s Native community. We are grateful to our supporters and partners who continue to come to us because you trust us to deliver critical services–more important this year as we welcome our students back to in-person learning at our Many Nations Academy, prepare to reopen our Early Head Start at Applegate School, host COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinics, complete our second affording housing development, Mamook Tokatee, in the Cully neighborhood, and bring the Native community closer to NAYA’s campus and services. When we look back on this past year, we’ll remember that because of you, we have answered our community’s challenges and provided financial resources to keep Native-businesses alive, schools safe, food on tables, and people employed. We will also remember the unprecedented beauty of our supporters, helping us deliver our mission-driven work to wrap our services around Native families, empower the community, and uphold our cultural values and traditions. So sit back and relax. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful items in our auction and bid heartily! Enjoy your Native-inspired meal and drinks if you’ve ordered them, and get ready to celebrate! On behalf of everyone at NAYA, we are so glad you are here with us tonight! We are truly Stronger Together

STRONGER TOGETHER 2021 was another year of challenges and another year of resolute determination from NAYA staff, Board fo Directors and partners who continue to come together to serve Portland's Native community. 2021 was also another year to celebrate how we come together to uplift and empower our community. We are STRONGER TOGETHER. In a year when we have had to respond to the ever-changing conditions of the pandemic, our partners and supporters have stood with us at every juncture, the NAYA community grew stronger than ever. The trials and tribulations of the pandemic will subside. And when they have passed, our NAYA family will emerge stronger than ever, STRONGER TOGETHER.
AUCTION SELECTIONS "LUMMI BEAR" BY DAN FRIDAY **THIS PACKAGE WILL CLOSE DURING THE LIVESTREAM GALA FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5** PACKAGE 19
Dan Friday is a Native of the Lummi Nation and a lifelong resident of Washington State’s Puget Sound region. Drawing from cultural themes and using modern processes, his work is contemporary in format while maintaining the traditional qualities for which Native American artistry is known. The past two decades working with artists such as Dale Chihuly, Paul Marioni and Preston Singletary have given Friday the tools and inspiration to further hone his craft. Today, he is well-known for producing some of the finest examples of glasswork to come out of the Pacific Northwest region, and his work can be seen in prominent museums and collections around the world. This exquisite piece is a vivid example of Friday’s work. Here he captures the majestic spirit of Bear in breathtaking waves of amber and turquoise. Highly coveted, and hard to find, this piece was donated by Dan Friday exclusively for the NAYA Gala. Measures 7.75” high x 8” wide (at base) x 2.5” deep
Thank you to Dan Friday
“SEA GUARDIAN BUTTON BLANKET” BY ALICE AND NICHOLE MAHER **THIS PACKAGE WILL CLOSE DURING THE LIVESTREAM GALA FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5** PACKAGE 52
Alice Maher’s button blankets are works of art and have become a very special tradition at the NAYA Gala. Alice Maher never makes blankets to sell, she only makes them for family, honoring purposes and ceremony. Maher, her daughter, and granddaughter have created a spectacular work of art by carefully affixing hundreds of unique abalone and shell buttons to this blanket, most of which were collected during the Great Depression and passed along to the Maher family. “Sea Guardian” reminds us that we are interdependent on the balance of our ocean and honors the unique eco-system and abundance of the great Pacifica. This design brings traditional Tlingit elements of sea urchin, kelp, jelly fish and two baby seals nesting on kelp beds. These design elements come together to create the image of the guardian- who watches over us all, much like the Pacific Ocean holds our world in balance. The spirit of this blanket honors and acknowledges a different power balance in the world. It emphasizes the lesson that what may be most powerful, and what you may depend on most, can sometimes go unnoticed or underappreciated. It is a reminder to look closer at what matters most and where true power comes from. This blanket was designed for the specific purpose of the NAYA Gala in honor of the elders, community and staff who strive every day to ensure that Native communities remember that they have always been powerful. Measures 40” high x 48” wide Thank you to Alice, Nichole, and Keya Maher

“SALMON VESSEL” BY LILLIAN PITT PACKAGE 18
This does NOT happen every day. A unique collaboration between two of our finest northwest Native artists creates this stunning medley in glass. Artists Lillian Pitt (Warm Springs/Wasco/Yakama) and Dan Friday (Lummi) collaborated in summer 2019 to create a series of blown glass vessels, including this striking piece you see before you. Depicting a salmon gill design in blue glass with a green lip, this vessel was blown and fused by Dan Friday, under the direction of honored elder and renowned artist, Lillian Pitt. Dan brought over twenty years of glassblowing experience, and Lillian brought the aluminum stencils – based on Columbia River and Plateau designs – that would be incorporated into each piece. By the end of the process the two had fused their respective visions into a brand-new series of rich, vibrantly colored vessels that reflect the time-honored traditions of both artists’ ancestors. “WOODPECKER BENTWOOD BOX” BY ANDY PETERSON PACKAGE 47
Bentwood boxes are among the most versatile objects made by the Northwest Coast peoples. Crafted using an ingenious technique that was specific to the region, the wood is bent to a 90-degree angle in three corners with the fourth corner being pegged, sewn or glued. In pre-contact times, when there were no metal tools or nails, this technique proved highly reliable for making strong, durable and watertight containers that were perfect for any number of uses. This classic bentwood box, made by Andy Peterson, depicts Woodpecker in traditional Salish design, and is a true testament to the art form. Andy is a member of the Skokomish Tribe. He began carving after being inspired by a tour of a museum exhibiting Northwest Coast art and began exploring various art forms. By the age of 18, he had taught himself how to both, carve and paint. Later, Andy and his Uncle Peter Peterson made a joint effort to revive the traditional steam-bent box at Skokomish. Andy continues to research and contribute to the revival of the Salish art style. He has taught many people in all traditional art forms and looks forward to working with his grandchildren and keeping the Salish Art forms alive. Measures 7.5” high (with lid) x 5” wide x 5” deep Thank you to Steinbrueck Native Gallery
