Part 2
Parade Like every year, the Masked Parade is a big part of the Arts Festival in Nelson. Lots of schools and groups take part of it and it´s just awesome! This year Nayland College made wonderful masks which represented the four houses: Aquila, Draco, Pegasus and Phoenix. Lots of students from Nayland College were part of it and it was just a lot of fun. So many people stood next to the street and enjoyed it. Students of one primary school were dressed up as little “Wonka”- candies. And another school was in Maori- style. Every school was inimitable and put so much effort in it! If you are in NZ during the Arts Festival you really have to see the Masked Parade it´s well worth seeing.

WE WON GOLD!!! Guess what?! We won the final! That was what we were all
telling people after we, Nayland College Football Girls, won the Tournament in Palmerston North in September 2012.
We won the quarter final after a penalty shoot-out and the semi final 3:2 against a college from Tauranga. That took us straight into the big final which was really intense. After another penalty shoot-out
we finally won, we really won the whole tournament even if nobody knew where we were from or that we actually participate
in this competition. In the end it was just an absolutely awesome and unbelievable experience to be a part of this incredible girls
team as an international student. Not only the fact that we won
the tournament but the whole trip; the ferry, the cooking, the hot pool, the shopping, the games, the atmosphere, just every single moment has been an awesome experience!

Touch Every Tuesday after school I’m off to Tahuna, not for a nice sunbath and a swim at the beach though, everything we do down there is hard work; we play Touch Rugby. Like you can probably tell from the name, touch is a sport close to Rugby. It is pretty much the same sport; take away the tackling, the injuries and the fear. You got six players on the field, three boys and three girls. The basic game itself is not really hard to understand, no big rules. You run with the ball until you get touched, then you roll it underneath you so the next player can pick it up. The goal of the game is to put the ball down behind the try line as often as possible; to score as many tries as possible. Sounds easy? It might be for someone who grew up with the rugby ball in their hands and never knew anything else than this sport. For me, German and totally new to this; Not really. “Cuts up, cuts up!!” “Your corner Laura, your corner” “Here, I’m coming deep, hit me now!” “BOW”. Yeah. Because I know what all of that means. I try my best to do what other people ask me to, but often it just ends in something like: “Laura watch your hands. Do we have to glue the ball to them or are you gonna catch it?!” At some times it is a bit demotivating, but I don’t really mind; it is fun to play so why give up on it. Everyone starts somewhere, and having two games every Tuesday should help improving my skills and even if not, at least I experienced something different and had fun. :)

NEW ZEALAND-Land of birds
Christina Ahrens
New Zealand is full of birds. There are heaps of different types and it would take ages to list them all, so here are only the 3 most famous ones. kiwi. The kiwi is without doubt the most famous bird in New Zealand. They are flightless and lay the largest egg in relation to their body size. But the name kiwi isn’t only used for the bird: The 3 kiwis: Kiwi fruit, yum *_* The cute Kiwi bird, And the human kiwis that take care of the birdies Kea Kea, the world’s only mountain Parrot. Very intelligent, they can even solve logical puzzles. Tui-not the beer ;) The birds can imitate human speech and have a noisy, unusual call that is different for each tui.

What we all miss! - The European DARK and HEALTHY bread! Some of us solved the problem by hunting down bread at the Saturday market, while others took the big step and made it themselves. There´s nothing like homemade bread, and it also gives you an opportunity to show off some baking skills to your host family and make
European grain bread Ingredients: 650 grams 1 tsp 3 tbsp 3 tbsp 3 tbsp 3 tbsp 25 grams 7 grams 450 ml
Grain Bread Flour Salt Sunflower Seeds Poppy Seeds Pumpkin Seeds Linseeds Butter Chopped Easy Bake Yeast Warm Water
How to make it: 1. Put the flour into a large bowl. Add the salt, 2 tbsp each of poppy, sunflower, pumpkin and linseeds. Add the butter and rub into the flour to combine. 2. Sprinkle over the Easy Bake Yeast. Pour the warm water. 3. Mix together with your hands until the mixture combines to make a rough dough ball. 4. Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and stretch and knead the dough for 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. 5. Shape into a round and sprinkle over the reserve 1 tbsp of poppy, sunflower, pumpkin and linseeds. Put on to a greased baking tray. Use a sharp knife to score a cross in the center of the loaf. Cover loosely with cling film. Leave in a warm place until double size (this take about 30-40 minutes). 6. Preheat the oven to 220째C. Remove the cling film from the bread and reduce the oven temperature to 200째C. Bake the bread for 35 minutes until golden. 7. Now is the time when you can enjoy your warm, healthy European bread. Remember to let your host family taste and post a picture on Facebook so all the internationals get jealous! Thea Jorgensen

PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY COOKIES Peanut butter and jelly is good right? And so are cookies? So the two taste mixed together should be a‐ma‐zing! Ingredients 1 cup flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1/4 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla White sugar for rolling A jar of your favourite jam, jelly or marmalade Directions Preheat your oven to 375°F, or 190°C. 1. Whisk the flour, salt and baking soda together. 2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, butter, brown sugar, egg and vanilla. It will look like alien slime, but don’t let this put you off. It’s supposed to. 3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir together until smooth. It will be as smooth as a baby bum. 4. Using a spoon, form 1-inch balls. Roll each in granulated white sugar if you want to be fancy, and then place on a baking tray. Bake for 5 minutes. 5. Gently push each cookie down with the back of a small spoon, flattening it and forming a small depression in the center. Fill the center with a small spoonful of your favourite jelly. Return to the oven and bake for another 10 minutes or so. 6. LET THE JELLY COOL BEFORE YOU TASTE THEM. 7. Eat with care and milk.

VIKINGS IN A FOREIGN PLACE Once upon a time, 10 adventurous seventeen years old Norwegian Vikings from all over Norway decided to move as far away as possible (don’t ask why, for some it was pretty random. And embarrassing enough; I thought New Zealand was close to Great Britain) for a year. Stine- the real tourist, Amund – the ultimate nordlending (northlander), Øystein – the unorganized solo-lover(don’t get it wrong, Solo is a Norwegian fizzy), Runa – the one from a small place where they talk funny, Thea – the well-organized sørlendning(southlander), Emil&Lena – the lovebirds that always disappears, Synne&Amalie – the hilarious blondines and me, the.. well, don’t ask. The diverse group met on the airport in Norway for the very first time; a slightly awkward meeting. But the awkwardness wouldn’t last for long, and as soon as the kids had waved goodbye to everything they had ever known, the journey could begin. And even though the expedition from the north to the south turned out to be a unique experience itself, the 10 Vikings finally arrived 60 hours later in this weird little pearl of a place called Nelson, on this enchanted island called New Zealand.
Amund
Despite the staggering distance, the 10 Vikings found their place in their new Kiwi families. They met some Germans, some exceptional Japanese, and heaps of other exemplary people from all over the world. Even though they were far from home, they were taken very good care of and looked after by eagles. Some of the girls joined the rugby team, had some unforgettable sleepovers in the school and got to know some real Māori’s and their reggae music. Some of the Vikings found out how to analyze “one flew over the cuckoo’s nest” and all of them experienced exams in kiwi style with pen and paper, without dictionary. All of them fell in love with the beach and had unforgettable times on camps in stunning areas. Some of them went to Wellington and watched an All Blacks game. Runa Believe me; it wasn’t hard to spot the tourists. Even though they all miss their beloved dark bread, most of |them miss mackerel in tomato sauce, appropriate dish sizes, brown cheese, actual fish for dinner and Øystein misses his Solo, they are all doing very well without their parents. Who knows what the last months will bring the 10 Vikings that once decided to move to New Zealand for a year? Nora Bull
