Norway

Once upon a time, in a faraway land called Norway, a mother was cooking pancakes for her seven children and their father. When she put the first load of batter into the frying pan, all the children were watching with eyes as wide as plates. After a while, the batter in the frying pan had turned into a delicious, thick and round pancake. The sizzling butter and the delicious scent made all the seven kids’ mouths water. Then the mother said: “Don’t worry, my children, there is enough for you all! Just wait until I have flipped it over, because the pancake needs to be cooked on both sides.”

But the pancake heard her, and he didn’t want to be eaten! So he bounced right out of the frying pan, rolled like a wheel out of the house, and straight down the hill they lived on. “Stop right there!” yelled the mother. She ran as fast as she could after the pancake, and all the kids ran after the mother, and the father ran after all the kids. “Catch it, get it, take it!” But no matter how much they shouted and screamed, and no matter how fast they ran, the round, rolling pancake kept rolling, rolling, rolling.

After rolling and rolling, the pancake met a man. “Oh, dear pancake” said the man, “please stop rolling, stay here and let me eat you!” But the pancake laughed and said “Now that I have rolled away from the mother, the father and the seven children, I can roll away from you too!” So the round, rolling pancake kept rolling, rolling, rolling. The man ran after, but the pancake rolled away from the man who ran.

After rolling and rolling, the pancake met a duck and a goose. “Oh, dear pancake” said the duck and the goose, “please stop rolling, stay here and let us eat you!” But the pancake laughed and said “Now that I have rolled away from the mother, the father, the seven children and the man who ran, I can roll away from you too! Yucky ducky and loosy goosy!” So the round, rolling pancake kept rolling, rolling, rolling.

After rolling and rolling, the pancake met a rooster. “Oh, dear pancake” said the rooster, “please stop rolling, stay here and let me eat you!” But the pancake laughed and said “Now that I have rolled away from the mother, the father, the seven children, the man who ran, yucky ducky and loosy goosy, I can run away from you too! Rooster Wooster!” So the round, rolling pancake kept rolling, rolling, rolling.

When the pancake had rolled further and longer than furthest, he reached a forest. A pig was standing outside the forest, but the pancake didn’t stop rolling this time, because everyone knows that pigs eat everything! But the pig said “What’s the hurry, dear pancake? We can go through the forest together, I have heard it’s not very safe.”

And so they did. But then, after a while, they came across a stream.

What was the pancake going to do now? He couldn’t get across the stream, because he was flat and could not float. Then the pig said “Don’t worry, dear pancake! Sit on my snout and I will use all my fat to float across the stream.” And so the pancake did. But just as the pancake rolled onto the pig’s snout, the pig went “OINK ZOINK!” and ate the pancake in one big mouthful! And after that, the round, rolling pancake didn’t roll, roll, roll anymore.
