The Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) Holds Its 1st Research Summit

The Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) will hold its first Research Summit this coming August, fulfilling several of its directives under Presidential Decree 37 1972: to promote, encourage, espouse and/or initiate research and development projects on social sciences and humanities and related fields; and to promote and encourage the dissemination of the results of its researches and studies in social sciences and humanities and to encourage their practical application to problems of the masses.

In the spirit of collaboration and partnership—or in NPF’s dictum, “sambayanihan”— the online Summit will gather 17 researchers from various disciplines and eight (8) expert panelists from NPF’s local government and private sector partners, namely: CARD Hijos Tours, the Provincial Government of Bataan Pawikan Conservation, the Municipality of Guiuan, the Province of Bataan - Cultural Heritage Preservation Division, the Iloilo Provincial Tourism Office, the Provincial Government of Batangas, Sagada, and the Creative Content Creators Association of the Philippines (SIKAP).

The NPF Research Summit will hold (5) poster presentation sessions spread out beginning on August 10 and ending on August 24, tackling the topics of: Measuring outcomes and impacts of conservation initiatives (Aug 10, 1:30pm-4:00pm); Preserving and safeguarding heritages for citizen wellbeing (Aug 12, 1:30pm-4.00pm); Regional Issues and directions in the conservation and management of cultural/and or natural Heritage (Aug 17, 1:30pm-4pm); Impacts of tourism on natural and/or cultural heritage protection (Aug 19, 1:30pm-4:00pm); and Art and the creative industries amidst the pandemic (Aug 24, 9:30am-12nn).

During each session, the researchers will present their research posters to the panelists. As they share their insights on how the participants may further improve their research, the expert panelists will also share their own research projects, discoveries, and challenges. The Summit research posters will be e-published by the NPF - Research Institute as part of the conference proceedings.

The NPF – Research Institute is a program that serves as a think-do-tank on public policies concerning heritage, cultural and creative industries, and tourism, with the Summit being one of its components. It is a knowledge development center that aims to conduct research on the following fields: Philippine Natural and Cultural Heritage, Sustainable Heritage Tourism and Ecotourism, Tourism Governance, Cultural and Creative Industries, and related areas.

This is only one of the three major programs the NPF is currently spearheading, which also includes the Heritage Space Program and Cultural Leadership Institute Program. All three help the NPF in accomplishing its mission of celebrating heritage, Filipino diversity, and creativity as a force for national development.

NPF Research Summit 2021: A Convergence of Art, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism Champions The Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) was created in 1972 by Presidential Decree No. 37, and is a Government-Owned or Controlled Corporation. Following the Weaving Summit held last October 2020, the NPF Research Summit 2021 is one of the largest events of the Research Institute. The NPF Research Summit responds to the need to fulfill the institutional mandate stated in Presidential Decree 37 1972, “To promote, encourage, espouse and/or initiate research and development projects on social sciences and humanities and related fields; and to promote and encourage the dissemination of the results of its researches and studies in social sciences and humanities and to encourage their practical application to problems of the masses.”

A Gathering of Industry Experts The Summit brings together art, culture, heritage, and tourism experts from local government units, government agencies, and civil societies. The moderators include Ma. Karina V. Garilao, a Heritage Consultant at Hijos Tours - Center for Agriculture and Resource Development - Mutually Reinforcing Institutions where she is providing technical advice relating to Heritage Interpretation and existing Hijos Tours programs, and for Heritage Interpretation in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. She currently sits as a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in the Philippines; Victor Estrella, a Hughes Research Fellow at the Center for the Southeast asian Studies of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2018, and an Asian Graduate Fellow at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore in 2016. He recently served as an intern at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Italy. He currently teaches at the Philippine Normal University Manila and the Ateneo de Manila University, and serves as technical adviser for the curriculum development and learning materials of the Cultural Leadership Institute of the Department of Tourism - Nayong Pilipino Foundation; Patrick Mansujeto, a Third World Studies Fellow, International Scholar of the Society for the History of Technology, and a member of the Young Leaders Program of the Pacific Forum. He currently serves as Learning Resource Head of the Cultural Leadership Institute of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation; and Anna Pineda, a University Research Associate at the Archeological Studies Program of the University of the Philippines. She is a Senior Collections Researcher of Nayong Pilipino Foundation Museo ng Nayon Project; The Resource Speakers will be multi-sectoral experts from CARD Hijos Tours, a social development organization in the business of ending poverty in the Philippines; the Provincial Tourism of Bataan; the Local Government of Guiuan; Eastern Samar; Provincial Culture, Arts, History, and Tourism of the Government of Iloilo; Batangas Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office; Intramuros Administration; and SIKAP (Creative Content Creator’s Association of the Philippines, Inc.).

A Platform for Exchange In 2020, the Nayong Pilipino Foundation produced its Sustainable Tourism Framework through the Research Institute, or RI, as an initial roadmap for sustainable tourism in the Philippines. This year, the Research Summit will open a forum on five (5) timely topics on art, culture, heritage, and tourism: Measuring outcomes and impacts of conservation initiatives; Preserving and safeguarding heritages for citizen wellbeing; Regional issues and directions in the conservation and management of cultural and/or natural heritage; Impacts of tourism on natural and/or cultural heritage protection; and Art and the creative industries amidst the pandemic; Each session consists of panel presentation and poster presentation guided by the day’s theme. In the panel presentation, the resource speakers from the participating local government units, government agencies, and civil societies will be presenting their own research papers, their discoveries, and challenges, and how they may further the said research. In the poster presentation, participating independent scholars and researchers who are affiliated with academic institutions or civil societies from around the country Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Central Luzon State University, Kapitbahayan sa Kalye Bautista at Iba Pang Lugar, University of the Philippines, University of Sto. Tomas, and Taguig City University will present their research posters before the panelists who will then share their insights on furthering the research. The platform allows for a potent exchange of ideas from across art, culture, heritage, and tourism advocates.

A Call for Sambayanihan “Sambayanihan” is derived from two words — “sambayanan," which means nation, and “bayanihan,” which refers to the Filipino tradition of collective service and sacrifice for general welfare. The Research Summit 2021 embodies the “sambayanihan” of art, culture, heritage, and tourism champions across the country. It is NPF’s call for art, culture, heritage, and tourism stakeholders to collectively unite in the celebration of cultural heritage, Filipino diversity, and creativity as a social and economic force for national development. At the helm of the Research Summit are researchers Dr. Laya Boquiren, Sarah Bendana, Jem Espina, Red Fabros, Jay Uyan, and Public Relations Officer Diana Onate.

Continuing Collaborations: SIKAP Participates in NPF’s Research Summit The Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) will hold the first NPF Research Summit this coming August. There will be several sessions spread out on different days of the month, beginning on August 10 and ending on August 24, with each day having a different topic to be discussed. The goal of the Summit is to discuss rising and relevant issues in heritage and the creative sector. Practitioners from the public and private sector shall be presenting their research and best practices in their own contexts. One of the collaborators of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation for the Research Summit is the Creative Content Creators Association of the Philippines (SIKAP)—a non-profit organization composed of creative individuals, studios, and various institutions that help content makers incubate, create, and develop their original creative content with the aim of promoting it on the global market. The representatives of SIKAP are scheduled to host a panel on the very last day of the Summit (August 24) on the theme “Art and the Creative Industries Amidst the Pandemic.” This panel will discuss and assess how the Creative Sector is faring one year into the the COVID-19 pandemic — to see how they responded to the needs of educators, businesses, and other enterprises under a work-from-home setup and what new policies are needed to support and sustain the Filipino creative in a post-pandemic Philippines. The first to present will be SIKAP board member Ms. Marla Rausch. Known as a trailblazer in the area of motion-capture animation, she will be discussing how animation has adapted to the pandemic. She will be followed by Mr. Gerard Anthony Navarro, a SIKAP member with years of extensive production experience in the multimedia field under his belt. He will be talking about the new trends that have been emerging in educational content. Last to present will be SIKAP President Mr. Magoo Del Mundo who will be discussing the emergence of creative content in this context. The NPF and SIKAP have been closely collaborating since the start of 2020. NPF’s “Umpukan sa Nayon: NPF as a Creative Hub” last April was done in collaboration with them, as the online round table discussion sought the insights of different hub leaders and creative specialists across South East Asia on how to develop an inclusive place for practitioners in the culture and creative sector. Shortly after that, the two organizations solidified the start of a long-term relationship through a solidarity event titled “Brindis.” Through a symbolic toast, they aligned the goals of NPF and SIKAP, celebrating a collaborative relationship that envisions and establishes a creative hub that provides opportunities for research based creations, fosters talents, builds partnerships and linkages, all while being a means to stimulate creativity. The event was streamed live. NBDB Joins NPF's First Research Summit The Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) will hold the first NPF Research Summit this coming August. There are several sessions spread out on different days of the month, beginning on August 10 and ending on August 24, with each day having a different theme. The goal of the Summit is to discuss rising and relevant issues in heritage and the creative sector. Practitioners from the public and private sector shall be presenting their research and best practices in their own contexts. The National Book Development Board (NBDB) will be one of the presenters at the Summit. Created through Republic Act 8047, also known as the Book Publishing Industry Development Act, the NBDB is primarily tasked with formulating or implementing a National Book Policy with a corresponding National Book Development Plan geared towards the development of the book publishing industry. Representing the NBDB will be their Executive Director, Charisse Aquino-Tugade. With interdisciplinary experience that spans the public and private sector, she creates an environment that empowers and amplifies voices, connecting communities and organizations that otherwise might not cross paths. As the Executive Director of NBDB, she is currently working on the National Book Database to standardize publishing industry metadata and bibliographic information of Filipino-authored publications. Her presentation will be titled “Post-Pandemic Futures: Agile Programming and the Publishing Value Chain.” She will be presenting on the last session of the Summit on August 24—designated with the theme of “Art and the Creative Industries Amidst the Pandemic.” This aims to discuss and assess the current situation of the Creative Sector one year since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic—to see how they responded to the needs of educators, businesses, and other enterprises under a work-from-home setup and what new policies are needed to support and sustain the Filipino creative in a post-pandemic Philippines.
