Hi, how are you? Hope you’re fine, so I’m going to start with the fact that the credibility that I have in this material you’re about to read is not really great, you are probably a friend who is supporting me in this strange choice of launching a magazine a month talking about random things (thank you), or you could also be someone who simply bumped into this content in the vast ocean that is the internet (thanks also for having the curiosity), anyway this magazine is not for you, it has as main objective to satisfy my desire to work with editorial design and gather content that I like, to force myself to improve my research and also serve as a portfolio, but if you are here, i hope you have at least an interesting experience, now you can come in but watch your head.

Free Care Package & Easter Events on Red Dead The latest weekly update for Red Dead Online adds in a free seasonal Care Package for players, along with Role Bonuses and Easter-themed extras.

T

his week’s weekly update for Red Dead Online adds in a free seasonal Care Package, as well as Role Bonuses, limited-time clothing items, and Easter-themed events. Red Dead Online didn’t get off to the best start upon its launch several weeks after Red Dead Redemption 2’s late 2018 arrival. Rockstar Games’ unceasing support keeps giving players reasons to return, though. Major patches may not come along very often, but they manage to usher in notable changes whenever the time is right. Past updates of this nature have brought Offensive and Defensive playstyles to the online experience, for instance, while others worked to greatly expand upon existing Roles. The smaller, weekly updates engender a fair amount of quality content in their own right, though they usually offer XP and in-game cash bonuses. Earlier this month, players were treated to a free ability card and discounts on a wide variety of items. The March 23 weekly update resulted in double rewards going to all who participated in and completed certain online missions and horse races.

iven the unpredictability involved in surviving the wild, Rockstar Games is supplying all Red Dead Online players with a seasonal Care Package for the next seven days. The package’s freebies include five Gun Oil, five Special Horse Revivers, three Chocolate Bars, three Wild Carrots, and two Potent Health Cures. In terms of new Bonuses, Naturalists can expect to receive triple the usual money and XP rewards for selling Black-Tailed Jackrabbit Samples. This week’s update will additionally treat licensed Bounty Hunters to a 50 percent cash bonus for all Bounties. Plus, head-hunters above Rank 5 can look forward to a 50 percent price drop on

the Navy Revolver. The Easter-themed extras come courtesy of Collector Bonuses, which requires players to complete the Weekly Egg Hunt Collection in order to gain access to the 50 percent cash bonus. To participate Collectors must hunt down Duck, Heron, and Goose Eggs, then return them to Madam Nazar.

Meanwhile, players who participate in the Condor Egg Free Roam Event can gain access to a 40 percent discount off any a Novice or Promising Collector Item. Clothing items such as the The Hopeman Vest, Cardozo Vest, Leavitt Jacket, and Lister Hat are all returning for a limited time, too. Red Dead Online still feels as though it could use a few more noteworthy features, but fans who continue to actively explore the multiplayer suite at least have a handful of reasons to sign on this week. After all, XP and in-game cash bonuses are nothing to scoff at. The Care Package seems well worth the effort, too. R e d Dead Redemption 2 hit stores over two years ago in October 2018. Rockstar deployed a beta version of Red Dead Online several weeks thereafter, then launched the experience in full a few months later. The online offer has continued to improve in the years since then; interestingly, it even received a standalone release late in 2020. 7

The Expeditions Update for No Man’s Sky, Update 3.3, has introduced a brand-new game mode that revolves around community and Milestones.

E

xpeditions for No Man’s Sky, Update 3.3, introduces a fresh game mode that allows travelers to explore the universe together in a completely new way. This counts as one of the title’s biggest patches since the Next-Generation Update, which developer Hello Games deployed last fall. Notably, the Next-Gen Update added 4K resolution and 60 FPS capabilities to both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Faster load times, 32-player multiplayer, and more detailed worlds played an integral part in the patch, as well. In the months since then, Hello Games has released smaller changes, such as the January patch that further enhanced the performance of No Man’s Sky on PS5 and PlayStation VR. Update 3.15 went live last month and brought a few new bells and whistles to the table in its own right. This particular set of changes, known as the Companions Update, significantly altered how players interact with creatures by debuting breeding, taming, and training mechanics.

No Man’s Sk Expeditions

Interestingly, the latest patch centers on companions of another kind. In the Expeditions mode that launched today, players take part in events that start at a “fixed point in the universe,” one bringing the community together in a shared journey. Patch notes on the No Man’s Sky website explain that expeditions revolve around Milestones, a series of open-ended exploration goals.

Completing phases of a Milestone unlocks special rewards; completing the entire expedition grants players access to extra bonuses. The newest update also overhauls Space Station Missions by greater depth and interest to the quests, alongside rebalanced rewards. To further encourage exploration, Expeditions introduces Target Sweep Mode. This new feature, attached to the Analysis Visor, forces players to emphasize their tracking skills when hunting specific targets. 9

A

s with every other major No Man’s Sky update, Expeditions appears to significantly alter the experience. It’s no wonder, then, that the exploration-based title continues to go from strength to strength, with no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

No Man’s Sky struggled early on, though, launching in 2016 to abysmal review scores and poor player reception. The game’s success in recent years has become the token example of a redemption arc in gaming. However, the number of titles that have similarly managed to succeed after a rough start are few and far between.

T

hough the Alien franchise has a decidedly mixed track record, the best game is widely considered to be Alien: Isolation, a 2014 first-person survival horror title by Creative Assembly. It received multiple awards and made many top 10 lists, including those of the all-time best horror games. While a sequel isn’t on the horizon yet, there’s certainly a demand for one and there are several obvious improvements it could make. The original Alien: Isolation is a direct sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie, following Amanda Ripley as she visits a remote space station to learn the fate of her mother, Ellen. Unlike most Alien games - or other survival horror offerings, for that matter - the player’s (main) nemesis is just a single creature that’s too dangerous to fight headon. This not only places an emphasis on stealth, but makes events considerably

more frightening by restoring the xenomorph’s status as the “perfect organism” unhindered by “conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality,” as Ash puts it. Without spoiling anything, the ending leaves room for another chapter.

If an Alien: Isolation 2 does get underway, it could stand a streamlined plot, true VR support - including PSVR - and some mechanics changes.

Alien: Isolation does have its flaws, especially length. At best the main story can be completed in a little over 13 hours, and more realistic playtimes are anywhere between 18 and 22. That’s fine for a lot of games, but in horror, it’s difficult to maintain suspense that long. Much of this playtime is padded out with busywork - fetching, fixing, and crafting items - or fighting less interesting enemies like the Working Joe androids. A simple way of improving Alien: Isolation 2, therefore, would be cutting out some of that fat and concentrating on the world of xenomorphs and corporate hegemony. What Else Does Alien: Isolation 2 Need To Change? Alien: Isolation 2 could also use a native VR mode.

third-party PC mod, MotherVR, proved that the original’s gameplay could work with headsets and be an even more immersive experience. It was (and is) limited by an interface originally designed for gamepads and keyboards, but it’s not hard to imagine a tweaked UI solving those problems. It could even prove a watershed moment like Half-Life: Alyx, helping to grow VR’s 14

audience, especially with a second-generation PSVR headset on the way. Some interface enhancements are due for flatscreen players, as well - the first Alien: Isolation’s in-game menus and controls are a little cumbersome, and save points are too far and few between. Ultimately, if anyone takes on the task of an Alien: Isolation 2, the biggest obligation may be maintaining or improving the standard of writing. The first game does a mostly admirable job of inserting itself into the Alien canon, capturing the nihilistic mood set in 1979 that most games have failed to follow. With luck, another developer will be allowed to take up the mantle in the next few years.

New Spawn’s Universe Art Revealed Some art has been revealed for Todd McFarlane’s Spawn’s Universe #1, which promises to serve as a launchpad for Spawn’s interconnecting universe.

A

rt has been revealed for Todd McFarlane’s upcoming one-shot Spawn’s Universe #1, which promises to serve as a launchpad for Spawn’s interconnecting universe. The book has been 30 years in the making and will feature several key Spawn characters. This will be the first time Spawn will lead his own universe. Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, is also one of the founders of Image Comics, a company under which he created Todd McFarlane Productions.

The company’s focus is on creator-owned works, which McFarlane helped spearhead after leaving Marvel Comics. He worked on their Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man titles. McFarlane’s Spawn series has been around since the first issue released in 1992, which sold 1.7 million copies. The series has hit several milestones throughout the decades and has been a major influence on comic book creators since its inception. In 2019 the series hit a new milestone with its 300th issue as one of the longest-running creator-owned titles, getting a spot in the Guinness World Records. Now, the series is expanding more starting this June with books like Spawn’s Universe #1 setting the groundwork. Image Comics issued a press release revealing some of the artwork in the upcoming Spawn’s Universe #1 and teased a variety of covers. There will be four covers by J. Scott Campbell, each featuring a key character in Spawn’s Universe #1, which likely means we’ll be seeing Campbell’s take on characters like Gunslinger Spawn and Medieval Spawn. 17

here will also be variants by McFarlane, a group cover with pencils by Brett Booth and inks by McFarlane (revealed below), as well as more yet-tobe-unveiled covers. The one-shot will be 52 pages long with a $5.99 price tag and releases in comic book stores on June 30, 2021. Spawn’s Universe will feature four stories each focusing on different versions of the Hellspawn and will introduce new heroes and villains. Each story will be written by McFarlane but will feature a different artist. The Spawn story will be drawn by Jim Cheung. The Gunslinger Spawn story will be illustrated by Brett Booth. The Medieval Spawn story will feature artwork by Stephe Segovia. And the She-Spawn story will have art by Marcio Takara. These will set the stage for the three upcoming spin-off titles also being released by Image in 2021, which include King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched. “I’ve waited almost 30 years to be able to get to this moment,” McFarlane said. “To deliver on ideas, I hope they will grow from this initial seed called Spawn’s Universe #1 into a fully formed world populated with hundreds and hundreds of characters in the near future.

18

The stage will be set with this book, and soon I’ll be launching into new monthly titles for the first time since 1992. I can’t wait to show comic readers all the crazy ideas in my head as well as opening up the floodgate to so many talented creators that have said they’d like to join me on this journey.” Spawn is an impressive feat of a comic book in the industry that shows no signs of slowing down. Just last year the Spawn Kickstarter raised over $1 million. With the increasing number of developments in the Spawn’s Universe #1, could the renewed interest finally spawn Todd McFarlane’s seemingly forever-in-development reboot movie of the franchise?

CWolverine’s Son in New OCover Art M i C S Wolverine’s bisexual son Daken is featured in the PrideMonth variant cover for Wolverine #13 from Eisner-nominated artist Phil Jimenez.

M

arvel Comics has unveiled the Pride Month variant cover for Wolverine #13, depicting Logan’s son, Daken by artist Phil Jimenez. The once-villainous, still-ruthless son of Wolverine stands before a stark-white background stained with blood, looking simultaneously threatening and seductive, as he is so often portrayed in the X-Men titles. His iconic, free-flowing mohawk is depicted with black brush strokes, adding an element of mixed media to the standard pencils and inks.

20

Created by writer Daniel Way and Steve As Wolverine’s long-lost son, Daken spent much of his early publication history as a cold-blooded villain manipulated into fighting his father.

Since then, he’s served as a member of the Dark Avengers, the Brotherhood of Mutants, and currently X-Factor Investigations. Following his first appearance in 2007, Daken has come to be one of Marvel Comics’ most recognizable bisexual characters. To commemorate Pride Month, Marvel Comics has recruited some of the industry’s top talent to provide variant covers for their ongoing titles showcasing LGBTQ+ heroes and villains. Eisner-nominated artist Phil Jimenez and colorist Marte Gracia have lent their talents to this stunning rendition of Daken. Blending sexuality with violence, this cover perfectly captures the elements of this character that have transformed him from a questionable villain to a fan-favorite, morally ambiguous antihero. Daken can currently be found in the pages of the ongoing X-Factor title from creative team Leah Williams and David Baldeon.

As part of the predominately-queer team which investigates mutant murder cases and discrepancies in the Krakoan resurrection protocols, Daken has been fully redeemed from his history as one of the X-Men’s most brutal villains. Throughout the course of the series, he has started a causal relationship with former Alpha Flight member, Aurora.

Thanks to the mutant nation of Krakoa’s amnesty program, Daken has been absolved of his past sins and has been embraced as a member of Logan’s extended family, which includes his clones

Laura Kinney and Scout (formerly Honey Badger). In June, the X-Men titles are participating in the Hellfire Gala, a one-night event that will unfold over the course of 12 issues across the line, and promises another major change to the fate of the mutant species. If the character’s history is anything to go by, Daken’s motivations and alliances are subject to change, no matter what the future has in store for Wolverine and the X-Men. 21

Bob Odenkirk shares his thoughts on what a happy ending for his onscreen wife Kim Wexler might look like after the events of Better Call Saul.

B

etter Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk imagines a happy ending for his on-screen wife, Kim Wexler, played by Rhea Seehorn. Introduced in the prequel series and never seen during the events of Breaking Bad, audiences may already be guessing that Kim may not be among the living by the time Better Call Saul season 6 wraps in 2022. Her character’s ultimate fate may end up being one of the most suspenseful plot points for the final season, especially as her romantic involvement with Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill has been arguably his most redeeming and humanizing story throughout the series. Odenkirk and company are currently shooting the final season of Better Call Saul in Albuquerque, New Mexico, though Odenkirk has stated that he does not yet know how the series will end just yet. By the time Better Call Saul wraps, audiences will have seen Jimmy McGill’s complete 6-year transformation into the slippery lawyer Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad and all the tragic experiences and poor decisions that led him down that path. Chief amongst those tragedies being the death of his older brother Chuck McGill, whose tepid last words to his brother were, “The truth is you’ve never mattered all that much to me.” 27

M O V i E S 28

O

denkirk told THR he could see a version of the show’s ending that leaves Jimmy and Kim in a happy place. Specifically, he addressed the assumption that prequel characters not seen in Breaking Bad are more likely to die. While he does admit that it is doubtful that Kim and Jimmy are still in contact during the events of Breaking Bad, he pushes the point that anything is possible, especially with a show like Better Call Saul where all the characters have the potential to evolve in shocking ways. “That’s not at all true. In fact, there’s some version of life where Kim and Jimmy stay married and live a Mary Matalin and James Carville-type situation. (Laughs.) Kim would be a superpowered lawyer with the white-shoe law firm, and he would be the complete scumbag ambulance chaser across town. And at night, they go home, take off their disguises and be kind to each other. I don’t think that’s where we’re going to go, but in real life, those weird and seemingly conflicting relationships can be very real. They can happen. It’s probably easy to think that Kim dies, or that anyone who’s not visible passes away. But there’s still a lot of people who die on these shows; the stakes are high. But I’m with you in that anything could be the case.”

With the prequel series mainly revolving around Jimmy McGill, there is a chance the show might be setting up a world where Kim is part of Jimmy/ Saul’s life’s during Breaking Bad, but circumstances have forced her off-screen. Perhaps she moved away to get some space from Jimmy and his new morally bankrupt business, or maybe she ended up in whatever “protection” scenario Saul went into at the end of Breaking Bad. Whether she dies or divorces Jimmy and flees, Kim’s ultimate fate all comes down to how Better Call Saul wraps up the Jimmy storyline. Throughout the series, she seemed to be his anchor, the character that kept him somewhat grounded in reality and kept him from being a complete scumbag. And seeing what he becomes in Breaking Bad, how Saul Goodman is more or less the embodiment of everything Kim Wexler hated, makes it even more apparent that she is not part of Jimmy’s life anymore unless her character changes drastically in season 6. But, if she does manage to survive the prequel series, maybe there is more to add to the story of Kim Wexler and Jimmy McGill/ Saul Goodman, hence the flashes to the future that have been shown throughout the series. Perhaps the final flash to the future will have some reunion between the estranged pair. 29

new report claims that The Batman is set in DCEU’s Earth-2. Directed by Matt Reeves, the movie will debut Robert Pattinson as the new Caped Crusader. Specific plot details have been scant at the moment, but this version of the hero is still in his early years of assuming the vigilante persona and is figuring out how to make sure he serves his intended purpose. Also factoring in the narrative is the Riddler (Paul Dano), who is supposedly the primary villain, while also featuring a couple of other antagonists such as the Penguin (Colin Farrell) and Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz). ommissioner Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), on the other hand, will also appear. As Warner Bros. pivots its superhero efforts to the multiverse, it’s now being reported that The Batman will be set in DCEU’s Earth-2. Additionally, the report from THR also claims that, except for The Batman, DC is planning for its films and shows to share the same universe. This means that The Batman will be an outlier, unconnected to the rest of the DCEU. While Affleck has long been gone from the DCEU, he made his return through Zack Snyder’s Justice League which debuted on HBO Max in March. Aside from his cut scenes from the theatrical version, the actor also returned for some reshoots as director Zack Snyder added the Knightmare sequence at the film’s end. This was supposed to springboard the scrapped Justice League sequels. However, as with the Release the Snyder Cut movement, it’s difficult to say the sequels will never

32

be made, leading to the possibility that Affleck’s Batman could continue his arc in the DCEU, albeit briefly. This shouldn’t present any issues with The Batman, however, since Pattinson’s version of the Dark Knight is on Earth-2. What’s exciting is the prospect of these worlds colliding for an epic crossover. For now, however, the focus is to build his own mini-universe on Earth-2 starting with The Batman. Since Pattinson’s version is in his early years as the Caped Crusader, Warner Bros. can develop his character throughout the next several years, chronicling his arc to becoming the confident version of the hero. But first, he needs to come to terms with his family’s involvement in Gotham’s corrupt system — something that he will learn more about in the movie.

he 2021 Mortal Kombat movie came close to receiving an NC-17 rating due to violence. The upcoming adaptation is the third film based on the popular video game franchise. It is directed by Simon McQuoid. The new Mortal Kombat will be in IMAX when it releases in theaters on April 23. It will also be available on HBO Max the same day. The film will once again immerse audiences in this fictional universe where formidable warriors battle to the death in a tournament that transpires over a variety of dangerous realms. The actors playing the iconic characters for the new go-round include Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Josh Lawson as Kano, and Max Huang as Kung Lao.

Mortal Kombat 2021 Movie

The buzz is high for this new Mortal Kombat to do right by the game series. Per Yahoo!, McQuoid spoke at a recent press event about remaining as true to the games as possible. He explained the goal of bringing the bloody bone-crunching brutality to the big screen took the movie “quite close to the line” of being marked with an NC-17 rating: 35

M O“ V i E S

What we had to be a bit careful of was … you can get to NC-17 territory pretty quick. It’s different in a video game when it’s not real human beings. When you move this across to reality, a different set of things start to happen in your mind, and you get rated slightly differently. So there were certain things that are in the game that would mean the film would be unreleasable. And none of us wanted that. … So we were balancing that stuff all the time. And there’s some stuff that you will see that really gets quite close to the line because we didn’t want people to go, ‘Meh. Seemed kind of lame.’

36

T

he last thing anyone wants from a Mortal Kombat movie is to feel like the fight sequences come off subpar. Taking a look back at the 1995 Mortal Kombat film, the CGI technology was far from great, which made characters like the villainous Goro come off a bit laughable. Still, the movie, which was helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the director who helmed the majority of the entries in the Resident Evil movie franchise, did well enough to spawn a bigscreen sequel. It’s also worth remembering it was the ‘90s. One could easily speculate the Motion Picture Association of America and audiences alike weren’t yet prepared for the carnage that awaits with the new flick.

With progress in both cinematic technology and genre storytelling, audiences should definitely expect this Mortal Kombat to be action-packed. It’s probably safe to assume moviegoers won’t be seeing iconic slasher Jason Voorhees or any of the horror movie characters that make cameos in the latest console release. But that’s not to say the movie won’t deliver the terrifying goods. With James Wan on board as producer, it’s completely likely the man behind the Conjuring and Saw franchises put his keen genre eye to work in order to make this Mortal Kombat a visceral roller coaster ride to remember. Mortal Kombat will premiere on April 23 in theaters and on HBO Max. 37 37

Hope you had a great time, se you again next week!
