Beautiful
O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea. O beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern, impassioned stress A thoroughfare for freedom beat across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law.

G a rt h F a g a n Rochester icon and legendary choreographer, you have received acclaim for your work here and around the world, and in all of your pursuits you have shown yourself to be a great teacher. Originally from Jamaica, you pursued your passion in New York City, studying with dance greats Martha Graham, José Limón, Mary Hinkson, and Alvin Ailey. You became director of Detroit’s All-City Dance Company and principal soloist and choreographer for the Detroit Contemporary Dance Company and Dance Theater of Detroit. In 1970, you formed a dance troupe composed of Rochester city youths, naming it The Bottom of the Bucket, But… Dance Theatre—a company that was to become, in 1990, the renowned Garth Fagan Dance. Your distinctive choreography is eclectic, drawing upon modern dance, Afro-Caribbean dance, classical ballet, post-modern experimentation, and jazz. Your Fagan technique demands accuracy, understanding, intelligence, and passion from your dancers, and it has had an indisputable impact. You have won the New York Dance and Performance Award, called the “Bessie” Award, as have four of your dancers, and your company was given a New York Governor’s Arts Award for excellence and originality. Garth Fagan Dance has performed on every continent, save Antarctica, and has three times been featured on PBS’s Great Performances—Dance in America. In addition to the work of your own company, you have choreographed the first fully staged production of the Duke Ellington street opera Queenie Pie (1986); Walt Disney’s The Lion King (1998), for which you received a Tony Award; and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1988), the opening production of Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare Marathon. Among the awards and honors bestowed upon you have been the 2001 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award, “established to honor those great choreographers who have dedicated their lives and talent to the creation of our modern dance heritage,” and the University of Rochester’s George Eastman Medal for “outstanding achievement and dedicated service” (2003). In 1996 you were named a Fulbright 50th Anniversary Distinguished Fellow. You have also received a Guggenheim Fellowship, an NEA Choreography Fellowship, and several honorary doctorates from the Juilliard School, the University of Rochester, and Nazareth College of Rochester, among others. You are passionately committed to education and hold frequent master classes, lectures, demonstrations, and video talks. You reach out to children and youth, engaging them in the art of expressive dance. The mission of Garth Fagan Dance is far reaching and includes the development of future dancers and the expansion of dance audiences. Having taught more than 30 years at SUNY Brockport, you are Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the State University of New York. We are honored that you are also part of the Nazareth College community. Garth Fagan Dance performed at Nazareth College’s 50th anniversary celebration in 1974, and since then it has performed at the Arts Center more than any other dance company. In 2007, the Nazareth College Arts Center became your company’s Rochester performance home. For your accomplishments as an artist, for your dedication to dance as an art form, and for your ability to share your passion with students and the community, Nazareth College is proud to bestow upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

L o u i se Woerner From your auspicious beginnings as the sole woman in your class to major in business administration at Trinity University to your current role as chairwoman, CEO, and owner of Home Care of Rochester, your life has been one of remarkable achievement. Your career in health care and aging has been characterized by service to your clients and concern for your employees and community. After earning your M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, you established, in 1978, Home Care of Rochester, a Medicare-certified home health care agency and health research and consulting firm. With nearly 800 employees and offices in Rochester and Washington, D.C., HCR has been repeatedly ranked by HomeCare Elite as a “Top 500” home care agency in the U.S., for its commitment to providing quality care to its patients. It has also been named one of the Best Places to Work in Rochester by the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and “Employer of the Year” by the Private Industry Council of Rochester, and it has received the Rochester Business Ethics Award. You hold the distinction of being the first woman to be inducted into the Rochester Business Hall of Fame (2003). You also have been a leader in health care and nursing, serving as the founding director and first president of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research. You hold many awards from the nursing community, including the Archon Award for Service to the Nursing Community by Sigma Theta Tau International; in 2000, you were the first non-nurse to be inducted into the American Academy of Nursing. You have published in more than 50 professional and technical publications. Your expertise has been sought out by federal, state, and local governments alike. You served as an economic analyst under President Nixon, a member of the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs, and a delegate to the Atlantic Treaty Association. You were appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee, and you have worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Care Financing Administration, and NASA. You have extended your expertise internationally as well, advising on the development of health care systems in Japan, the Republic of Tatarstan, and Indonesia. You have also served for two terms on the New York Federal Reserve and on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards, including the First Niagara Financial Group, AAA of Western and Central New York, HealthNow, Inc., Rochester Business Alliance, Center for Governmental Research, and Strong National Museum of Play, and you have been a director of the National Women’s Hall of Fame. You and your husband, Don H. Kollmorgen, are philanthropists and key supporters of local organizations such as the Susan B. Anthony House, the Strong National Museum of Play, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Wilson Commencement Park, and Nazareth College. Embodying your commitment to health and human services, you and Mr. Kollmorgen established the Woerner Kollmorgen Award for Public Service, presented by Nazareth College’s School of Health and Human Services. The award honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions in the areas of health and human services, thereby improving the quality of lives of residents in the greater Rochester community. We are proud in turn to honor you and your contributions to the many communities of which you are a part, and which you serve, by conferring upon you the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

M a r y T. B u s h ’ 5 1 Devotee of Nazareth College from your freshman year, you have served this College as exceptional faculty member and untiring academic administrator. All here present—especially our graduates of 2010—greet you warmly on this, Nazareth College’s 83rd Commencement Day. We are justly proud of you, and of your accomplishments, beginning with your own commencements, from Nazareth College in 1951, from Georgetown University the following year, and, with doctorate in hand, from the University of Ottawa in Canada. Today we celebrate your unique role in shaping this College for more than 50 years. The early choice of history as your major field of study has proved prophetic, for you have become—and will be remembered as—a “historic figure” in the life of Nazareth College. Your long and devoted service to Nazareth College as faculty member and academic administrator is unmatched by any other member of this College—past or present. A unique characteristic, as both faculty member and administrator, was captured very early in this good-natured warning given to students in your classes: “With Dr. Mary Bush, there’s no beating around the bush!” High performance standards have consistently been your hallmark, not only for your students but for yourself and for Nazareth College as well. As academic programs developed in the College, you served as acting chair of the social sciences department and coordinator of the American studies program. As chair of the history department, you secured internships for our students in New York State Senate and Assembly local offices. Yours was a productive influence on the Charles Settlement House as both board member and president of the board of advisors. And in your spare time you served as secretary of the College, one of its four legal officers. In a moment of special candor you once acknowledged that “My life has pretty much been Nazareth College. That’s the reason I’ve stayed so long.” After decades of total commitment as history professor and assistant to the vice president for academic affairs, you eventually relinquished your teaching role, while continuing to serve in your academic administrative capacity until the end of January 2009. Now in retirement, you continue to serve on the College’s archives committee, devoting both time and energy to archival work for a book-length history of Nazareth College, much of which has also been your history. Nazareth College is a more solidly academic, scholarly, collegial, and person-centered institution because of you. Accomplished teacher, historian, and academic administrator, untiring advocate for Nazareth College students, you have integrated your life and your energies with Nazareth College for 56 years. There neither can be, nor ever will be, another Dr. Mary T. Bush at Nazareth College. In celebration of, and in special gratitude for, your lasting impact on “the College we love,” Nazareth College of Rochester proudly confers on you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

T he Ac ademi c Co st u me The Academic Costume that is worn in commencements across the country today originated in the Middle Ages, when a gown and hood were used by scholars to keep warm in unheated buildings. The outfit was patterned after the prevailing dress of the times. Because a large number of the scholars were clerics, the robes resembled those of the monks. The hoods were fashioned after the monk’s cowl and were attached to the gown so that they might be drawn over the head. Later, when the skullcap as a head covering displaced the hood, it was made separately from the gown. The skullcap evolved into a pointed cap, which we recognize today as the mortarboard with its tassel. Until the end of the Civil War, students at most American universities wore caps and gowns daily. In 1894, the American Intercollegiate Commission standardized the academic costume, and, as a result, hoods and gowns came to symbolize the type of degree attained. There are three types of gowns and hoods: Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor’s. The Bachelor’s gown is made with an open or closed front and has long pointed sleeves. The velvet edging on the hood is the narrowest and least exposed of the three degrees. The Master’s gown is an open-front garment with long closed sleeves. The ends of the sleeves are square on the Master’s gown, and the velvet edging on the hood is somewhat wider than on the Bachelor’s hood. The Doctor’s hood has the widest velvet edging of the three, and the gown is an open-front garment with round, bellshaped sleeves. There are wide, black velvet panels or facings down the front of the Doctorate gown, with three velvet bars upon each sleeve. The velvet on the Doctor’s gown may be the color of the degree, rather than black. The lining of the hood indicates the colors of the institution conferring the degree. Nazareth College’s colors are purple and gold. The border of the hood indicates the academic discipline in which the degree was earned. Nazareth College awards a Bachelor of Arts degree (white border), a Bachelor of Science degree (gold border), a Bachelor of Music degree (pink border), a Master of Science in Education degree (light blue border), a Master of Science degree (gold border), and a Master of Arts degree (white border), a Master of Social Work degree (yellow border), and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (green border).
