In 1861 a Christian Doctor called Kaloost Vartan arrived in Nazareth and set up a 4-bed clinic. Since then, Jesus' home town has been the base for a witness of His sacrificial and complete love through quiet, effective and practical service to anyone in need. The Nazareth Trust does four things. We: Heal, Teach, Serve - through outstanding, inclusive medical care, education and assistance programmes Build Bridges - uniting Christians in the Holy Land with Christians in other parts of the world. From our campus high on 25 acres of Nazarene hillside we run medical services, educational projects, volunteering programmes and social enterprises. Each provides a powerful and humble demonstration that our Saviour’s arms are open wide to all. Each is a testimony of cooperation and coexistence in a land riven by tension. As followers of Jesus of Nazareth, our work is nonpolitical, non-denominational, and genuinely inclusive. It speaks equally to Arabs of Yesu'a Al Masih, Jews of Yeshuah, and Westerners of Jesus. Read on and learn how, with your help, this work can continue and develop.

THE NAZARETH TRUST...

Nazareth Hospital EMMS Ours is the General Hospital for Nazareth. Open on its present site since 1921, it continues to welcome anyone irrespective of origin or faith. Those who know our hospital love it as a Christian place of healing and restoration. It speaks powerfully of co-operation and reconciliation as Christian, Jew, Muslim and Druze are all represented amongst both staff and patients. The hospital has 147 beds, and receives over 50,000 visits to our Emergency Room every year. It operates within the Israeli healthcare system, but can only continue providing care and compassion to the sick and wounded in Nazareth with your help.

Nazareth School of Nursing Opened in 1924, the School is both distinctively Christian, and run in sympathy with the values of Arab culture. Our environment is particularly attractive to female students, around 70% of whom are Muslim. Through unconditional service to all in the name of Jesus, we help give improved life chances to young people from a minority group through education and by equipping them with the means to support their families. Help us continue to provide outstanding education and encouragement to those with aspirations to a caring vocation.

Nazareth Village Based around a 1st Century wine press unearthed at the bottom of our hillside, Nazareth Village is a rigorously authentic and living representation of rural life in 1st Century Galilee - a mere 500 metres from the Nazareth in which Jesus lived. As well as pilgrims who come from across the world, Nazareth Village welcomes Christian, Jewish and Muslim school groups from across Northern Israel – all of whom come time and again to experience Jesus’ parables brought to vivid life. Help us make this work even more effective as it speaks of the reality of Jesus to anyone who will hear.

Support the Living Stones Tucked in a bowl amongst the hills of Southern Galilee, Nazareth has been home to followers of Jesus since the Angel Gabriel told Mary of Jesus’ impending birth. Life today is not easy for Christians in the region, and after more than a century of decline, numbers have reached a crisis point in the Land. Jesus’ message of reconciliation – of ‘love your enemy’ carries particular power here, as the land is riven with many tensions. The 'Living Stones' have always been here, able to trace their astonishing heritage back to the Acts of the Apostles. Help us to help them flourish, prosper - and stay.

THE NAZARETH TRUST...

What Can I Do Build Bridges – Join The Nazareth Tithe Help us – through prayer support; through telling others of our story; and through your gifts. Join the ‘Nazareth Tithe’ – the movement to tell Christians everywhere of: the message of Nazareth in a world of grief and strife; the hard realities of life for Christians in the Holy Land; how, united, followers of Jesus can make a difference.

Volunteering in Nazareth There is a long tradition of volunteers of all ages coming to Nazareth from across the world to help in our work. They come individually, or in work parties, for short or longer periods. Volunteers come in order to give - but often find that they receive much more! In addition to the existing programmes in the Hospital and at the Nazareth Village, we are developing a new Programme enabling long-term volunteers to work in the Christian Communities of Nazareth

Help us build living bridges uniting Christians in Nazareth and Christians here.

… Healing in the name of Jesus since 1861

Why Nazareth Matters Brought here as an infant, the Lord Jesus lived in Nazareth for 30 of His 33 years on earth. Nazareth was always a small provincial place, reckoned to be of very little importance. When Jesus was recruiting his disciples, Nathanael even remarked that nothing worthwhile ever came from Nazareth. It is the place with which Jesus chose to identify Himself, both in His ministry, and when He appeared in risen glory to Paul on the road to Damascus. When Jesus began His ministry, the synagogue in Nazareth was one of the first places in which He taught – preaching 'with authority' after His 40 days of fasting in the wilderness.

Modern Nazareth In what Israelis call the 1948 War of Independence, and Arabs call the Catastrophe, some historians have remarked that it was Nazareth’s Christian significance which ensured the protection of its people. Arabs – both Christian and Muslim – were granted a safe haven in the town. In 1948, Christians were in the majority, but since then Nazareth has changed. Christians have left both Nazareth and other parts of the Holy Land. In 2005 just over 2/3 of Nazareth’s total population of 65,000 were Muslim, just under 1/3 Christian. Elsewhere the Christian presence is all but gone. Help followers of Jesus of Nazareth both there and here make a difference in the Land.

THE NAZARETH TRUST...

Our Background Healing in the Name of Jesus since 1861 In 1841, a group of Scottish Doctors founded the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society – ‘EMMS’. It was with the Society’s support that a young and visionary Kaloost Vartan trained as a Doctor. A few years after Dr Vartan’s arrival in Nazareth in 1861, the Society undertook to support him. What grew over the years into our General Hospital in Nazareth was, until 2004, owned by the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society (EMMS). In that year it divided into two separate and independent charities – “EMMS Nazareth” and “EMMS International”. Whilst we share a common history, each new charity has developed a distinct identity and vision. EMMS International retains an office in Edinburgh, supporting primary healthcare projects in various parts of the developing world. We who are “EMMS Nazareth” have adopted the working title of “The Nazareth Trust”. We own Nazareth Hospital EMMS and the Nazareth School of Nursing, and the hillside on which these and the Nazareth Village sit. Our Head Office is in Tyne and Wear, in North East England.

Our Statement of Faith is that: As Followers of Jesus of Nazareth, We Will. Our values as “Followers of Jesus of Nazareth” are to: respect all people; serve unconditionally; be open and honest; work in co-operation and partnership; and strive for excellence.
