“...for unto us a child is born” Isaiah 9:6
Welcome from Joseph Main, CEO
T
he very warmest welcome to our Christmas Newsletter. I do hope you enjoy it and that you find it an informative & inspiring read.
Here, at The Nazareth Trust we have enjoyed a year of very real progress and development. Our Hospital, School, SERVE Nazareth Programme and Chaplaincy Service have all achieved a number of significant successes in the last 12 Joseph R. Main months. This is a testimony to all those who Chief Executive have worked so diligently and with such passion to ensure this precious ministry continues to serve those who need us. It is also a testimony of what can be accomplished when people are united under Jesus - irrespective of where they may live in the world. When supporters like you commit your prayers, time and resources to stand alongside those on the front line of our services, remarkable things happen. 2010 has been the proof of this. Your on-going support and our on-going commitment to serve enables us to look ahead to 2011 with very real anticipation. There are some significant developments on our horizon which will further strengthen all we do - never forgetting that it is Jesus Himself who is our foundation, inspiration and reason. It is with some sadness that we say goodbye to our Chairman, Professor David Harrison, who retires this year. He has led this work through some of its most complex and difficult times - never afraid to roll up his own sleeves and get on with the work at hand. His depth of faith, his genuine servant-heart and his skilled leadership will be missed. Enjoy our news over the next few pages and allow me to offer my prayers for you all, that this season will be full of warmth and joy, as we join together in the celebration of the birth of our precious Lord and Saviour, Jesus.

150th Anniversary Bike Ride - Cycle the Galilee About the Ride
T
here have been Bike Rides in support of our work for many years. The next ride is particularly extraordinary, however, as it will be the first event in a year of celebration marking the wonderful occasion of the 150th anniversary of our ministry in Nazareth.
I
t is my very great pleasure to welcome you to The Nazareth Trust Christmas Newsletter. I hope you will find the news contained to be of value and encouragement. The Board of Trustees meets three times a year in Nazareth, so, in the future, after Prof. David Harrison each Board meeting, the Chair will write Chair of Trustees a small article in this newsletter to bring you, our supporters, up to date with new developments and activity within the whole organisation. This is a particularly special time for me personally, as I am due to retire from the Board of Trustees and so my service as Chairman will come to an end.
This, then, will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in such a milestone event and to experience the North of Israel in this exceptional and distinctive way. The ride will be part adventure and part pilgrimage and will take place from the 6th to the 13th November 2011. DON'T MISS OUT on this amazing opportunity to visit the Holy Land in a way which will stay with you forever. GET INVOLVED - it will be an experience like no other and, of course, you will be making a very real difference to the vital work and ministry of The Nazareth Trust.
Itinerary Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Mt Carmel (near Haifa)
Although there is a hint of sadness in this, I am also very encouraged by the direction in which the whole organisation is moving - including our Hospital - and even though we face challenges ahead of us, I am confident in the leadership of Joseph, our Chief Executive, supported by our senior executive team. We are continually looking to improve our work and to find increasingly effective ways to fulfill our statement of Faith and Values. And to date, I am delighted to say that we are achieving just that. We will, therefore, continue as Followers
of Jesus of Nazareth to respect all people, to serve unconditionally, to work in co-operation and partnership and to strive for excellence. It has been an honour to serve this valuable and precious ministry as Chair of the Trustees. Getting to know our staff and supporters over the years has brought me great joy and I retire with a very real sense of achievement and confidence in the future. With my continuing prayers for you all.
Day 2: Cycle Mt Carmel to Akko (Acre)
Professor David Harrison
Day 3: Cycle to Upper Galilee - overnight in a kibbutz

Day 4: Cycle to Banias (Caesarea Philippi) – overnight in HaGoshrim (near Mount Hermon). Day 5: Cycle along the Jordan Valley to Sea of Galilee, visit Capernaum and boat ride to Ginosar – overnight in Ginosar. This is approx 2km from Migdal. Day 6: Cycle to Nazareth for welcome and celebration at Nazareth Hospital
PRAYER BOX Please pray for each member of the Board of Trustees as they serve in their roles and carry the responsibility of the organisation. Please also pray that the Trustees’ leadership will continue to be thoughtful, compassionate and courageous as they continue to safeguard and develop our work into the future.

Nazareth Hospital EMMS
O
ur Hospital continues to care for those most vulnerable and in need in Nazareth and surrounding villages. The heart of our Hospital, encapsulated in our Statement of Faith and Values, continues to be worked-out on a daily basis, as our dedicated staff apply every ounce of their professionalism, skill and compassion to serve all the communities in the area.
How YOU Can Help....
The work of The Nazareth Trust simply cannot continue without the prayers, goodwill or financial generosity of you, our supporters. Below, you will find a number of ways in which you can stand shoulder to shoulder with us as we continue to strive to show the love and reality of Jesus in all we do in His own home town.
In July, this dedication was clearly seen when as many as 40 emergency patients were admitted to the Hospital over a period of just 30 minutes after an accidental gas leak in one of the major hotels in Nazareth. Even the staff who were Checking not on duty, being alerted by the Checking chest chest x-rays x-rays sirens of the ambulances rushing through the town, left their homes and families and joined the emergency teams at the Hospital, helping wherever they could.
Throughout this newsletter you will have seen a number of blue Supporter Boxes giving some insight into the needs of each of our various works - and here too we encourage you to get in touch with Joseph or Sue at Head Office for further information about any of the needs you may have read about. Our contact details can be found on the back cover.
But, the strength of our Hospital is not just found in the sense of community and family within the Hospital itself, it is also found in the consistent endeavour to deliver our services to the very highest standards .
Using a standing order or setting up a direct debit at your bank. Let us know and we can give you all the details you will need;
As one of the ways to measure how well we work, we have recently embarked upon a process of Internal Auditing, by which our systems and procedures are examined by an external professional third party. It is inevitable, with such close scrutiny, that there has been found some room for improvement and some need for change, but there is a tremendous determination at all levels within the Hospital to work as one to achieve the standards of excellence we all aspire to. We are also delighted to welcome Dr. Bishara Bisharat as the new Head of the Hospital. Harvard educated, Dr. Bisharat has a long and successful history at the forefront of medical care in Israel - particularly in the North. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, and has already brought substantial improvement to the work of the Hospital.
An insight into our Children’s Ward...
O
ur Children's Ward is one of the oldest departments of the Hospital having been in the same location for the last 50 years and with only minor upgrades of the facilities possible over the years. Letters of appreciation from children Mother & son in our Children’s and their parents are regularly Ward received - much more than in any other department. One such letter was written as a poem, by a 12 year old boy, thanking each staff member in turn, describing their good work and kindness of spirit - made all the more poignant by the boy’s blindness. 4

Friends of Nazareth Hospital - Toronto
T
he Toronto chapter of the Friends of Nazareth Hospital Association (FONHA) held its charity Dinner Dance at the St. George Centre of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Toronto on October 16, 2010. The event was a great success. Entertainment was provided by the singer, Faisal Al-Wazani, along with the oriental band, the Al-Rabie Nabile Beidas, Chairman of the Canadian Friends Group Group, led by Ma’en Taleb. The group was greatly blessed by a donation from Najib Farah, son of the late Cannon Shafik Farah, founder of the Toronto chapter, who donated all the funds needed to pay for the musicians (some $2,800). Before dinner was served, the president of the Toronto chapter Najla Sakran welcomed the guests as well as Dr. Bishara Bisharat, Head of the Nazareth Hospital Dancing in celebration of The Nazareth Hospital who came to the event to thank the committee and supporters of the Toronto Chapter for their untiring support of the hospital. While dinner was served, the musicians took over and encouraged the guests onto the dance floor with their outstanding talent. Volunteers sold raffle tickets for a wealth of donated prizes. There was also an auction for a beautiful masbaha (a set of prayer beads), generously donated by a Nazareth jeweler from Toronto. The bidding started at $400 and ended at $3,200. The winning bidder, Mr. Samir Jubran, decided that he would increase his gift to $5,000, a generous and greatly appreciated gesture, making him the toast of the evening! In total, the event raised an amazing $24,000. Thank you to the Toronto Chapter and to all those who participated in a very enjoyable and successful evening.
PRAYER BOX Give thanks for Friends past and present - be they in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada or elsewhere. Pray that the Lord will bring new opportunities to tell the story, and new partners to ‘Come With Us’ in service of the peoples of Nazareth 16
Nazareth Hospital EMMS Children's Ward staff excel in their approach, using holistic techniques and routinely serving beyond expectations. Despite the relatively poor physical condition, once entering the department, the positive atmosphere among children, their companions and staff is palpable. Children from all backgrounds, whether Jewish, Christian or Moslem all play on the same tables, share the same rooms - Visiting on our Children’s Ward some even exchanging phone numbers before they are discharged and go home. We have also known children to come back to the ward just to visit their new friends. Most children are accompanied by a family member and staff are often able to get to know the family during the child’s stay. Sometimes this relationship of trust will allow staff to discover underlying issues or additional factors that may have contributed to the child's illness and, as a consequence, result in a change of treatment or allow for additional intervention. As an example, a 7 year old boy was admitted with severe abdominal pain. Nurses discovered that he was being physically abused by his teacher and certain classmates at school. Our staff were able to assist and arrange additional support, even once the boy was discharged. If you would like to support our Children’s Ward read how you can do this on Page 17.
SUPPORTERS’ BOX Although an apparently sombre subject for the Christmas Season, we want to make our supporters aware of the need to redevelop the mortuary facility in the Hospital. The current facility, little more than a shed constructed from corrugated sheeting, is unable to provide anything more than the most basic of space to families suffering from grief as a consequence of the loss of their loved ones. Despite the mortuary being used exclusively for the entire Nazareth municipality, the Hospital has, to date, been unable to garner local support to redevelop the facility and provide better standards of service at this, the most sensitive and emotional of times for families. We need your support to raise the £145,000 needed to construct & equip an entirely new facility: providing space for family members, for religious washing and to provide the appropriate level of dignity for the deceased. Indeed, this is considered so important that we have decided to make it one of the primary fundraising objectives of our 150th Anniversary Bike Ride (see page18). If you would like further, specific information, please contact Joseph or Sue at Head Office.
PRAYER BOX Please pray for all the staff and volunteers of our Children’s Ward - that they will be able to continue to show the compassion of our Lord in such a powerful and loving way. Please also remember families suffering bereavement and grief during this Christmas time. 5
School of Nursing
O
ur School of Nursing continues to grow and develop in a wonderful way. The School of Nursing Director, Dr. Amal Khazin, and her staff continue to show their very real dedication to our students and the extremely high standards of their education.
SERVE Nazareth Looking back over the summer, Bradley talks about his personal spiritual journey, one which involved literal journeys as he walked around historic and spiritual sites: ‚This trip has given me the chance to really experience
what it means to trust in God. It’s been an amazing experience to see how God has moved, how God has changed the way I even act myself. The past three months have been such an amazing opportunity to experience God’s beauty in His creation and His love for people. My trip to Israel has truly changed my life‛
Graduation Day 2010 Our School provides a very special teaching and learning environment. Open to all, without distinction, our School is both distinctively Christian, and run in sympathy with the values of Arab culture. This often makes our School the institution of choice for the families of students - confident in the quality and standards of the education offered, while trusting the faculty and staff with the development and nurturing of their young people.
Members of the 2010 Graduation Class
When it opened in 1924, the School operated in the basement of the Hospital and had the sole objective of training women to serve as nurses in our own Hospital. Now, as 2010 draws to a close, the aspirations of our School (and therefore our students) are much more universal and outward looking.
In September we celebrated with 56 or our newest graduates in a joyful ceremony attended by friends, family and dignitaries including the Mayor of Nazareth, Ramez Geraisy. Graduation Day is always a day of great joy and of looking forward, but this year was particularly special in this regard, as 2010 is the first time in our 85 year history that our Student presentation to Mayor Ramez Geraisy School of Nursing has been able to offer students the opportunity to move on to 6
After such an incredible summer, we are now preparing for our first SERVE Nazareth winter cohort! Starting in January 2011, the winter cohort will have a different feel to the summer programme, with cooler weather and some different opportunities. We are also introducing our new internship programme. The SERVE internship is individually tailored to each intern, to support and enhance their area of study. The internship lasts from one to five months and is available from January to May. Areas of experience include medicine, nursing and various forms of ministry, education and biblical studies, etc. For more information, please contact us at serve@nazarethtrust.org. You can apply for all SERVE Nazareth programmes through our website www.nazarethtrust.org/SERVE. We also want to invite you to join our church partnership programme which allows your church to be more involved with SERVE Nazareth and get priority places for internships. Church leaders should contact us by email for more information. We look forward to hearing from you! SUPPORTERS’ BOX You can support an individual to join the SERVE Nazareth or Internship programmes, assisting them to participate in an experience that will literally change their lives and personal lifelong ministries. There are a number of different ways to support participation from church sponsorship to individual gifts, from assisting with personal development to helping through the preparation stages. If you would like further, specific information, please contact Joseph or Sue at Head Office.

SERVE Nazareth
2
010 saw the first cohort of SERVE Nazareth arrive in Nazareth and complete their three months of service with local churches and ministries. The team, made up of ten young adults, spent their time between different ministries and community placements, serving and encouraging others.
School of Nursing study a nursing degree with us as we move ahead in partnership with Haifa University. Indeed, this year, we had an additional 70 people join the student body of already 122, over 40 of whom will be studying on this new degree programme. 2010 saw, with the generous support of BibleLands in the UK, the completion of the auditorium level in the School and of the new professional medical library. And, even as these major projects were completed, our School received additional support from the Israeli Ministry of Health enabling us to install a brand new computer suite for the benefit of students. Completion of the auditorium level with ancillary office and teaching space has also provided new opportunities to work in partnership with other organisations, including our recent arrangement with Bethlehem Bible College, providing them an opportunity to establish a new additional work in the Galilee region.

Hannah writes about serving others, from her experiences in the hospital’s dialysis ward, giving hand massages to patients, singing and praying with them:
Even with such significant progress as this, our School continues to look forward. In 2011, we will continue work towards the objective of becoming an independently recognized college in our own right and will be looking to extend the learning experience beyond the boundaries we have already achieved. We would like to begin to provide opportunities for our students to experience an international exchange programme, and to be able to provide additional opportunities for talented students to attend our School irrespective of their economic circumstances.
SUPPORTERS’ BOX With the support of the Sobell Foundation in the UK and the Nazareth Project Inc. in the USA, our School has been able to provide the opportunity for bursaries to be awarded to promising students who would otherwise not be able to afford to attend.
SERVE Nazareth summer cohort in Jerusalem
‚It really showed me the power of actions in ministry.
God truly wants us to show His love. We can talk about Him all we want, but I think the love of Christ is most powerfully portrayed through our service.‛ PRAYER BOX Please pray for the work of SERVE Nazareth, that it will continue to provide opportunities for people to come to Jesus’ own home town and serve in His name. Pray also for the co-ordinators, Derek Schwartz and Christine Farah, as they find opportunities to serve the communities of Nazareth and accept the pastoral care responsibilities of all those who participate. 14
In 2011 we would hope to extend this type of support to include opportunities for all those involved in the School to participate in enrichment and further development programmes. This may include professional development for faculty and staff or exchange programmes for students with other Christian institutions, allowing them to experience nursing with an international perspective. We also will be commencing a major capital campaign towards the end of 2011 to further develop the School facilities. If you would like further, specific information, please contact Joseph or Sue at Head Office.
PRAYER BOX Please give thanks for the tremendous achievements of the students, faculty and staff this year. Pray with us that our School will continue to provide the very best educational opportunities in our field - in the name of Jesus. 7
NAZARETH HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY SERVICE
Nazareth Village
T
he Nazareth Village owes much of its success to the dedication of local and international volunteers. Since the beginning in 2000, the Village has boasted a core of hardworking individuals who span several generations, even more nationalities and represent multiple Christian denominations. Their common ground being a commitment to bringing to life the ‘Nazareth Jesus knew’ for people around the world.
MEDITATION Salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Be good salt and let your light shine. A whole family of volunteers! Volunteers are essential to the work if the Village, helping in all areas from gardening and animal care to thatching roofs in the traditional way. On any given day, a visitor might see a volunteer dressed in first century clothing while tending to the vineyards, or baking bread over an open fire. In 2009, 77 volunteers contributed 6,868 number of working hours. Almost all volunteers describe their experience as ‚unforgettable‛ and that their time with us ‚brought the Bible to life‛.
Volunteer looking after a young goat
At this Christmas time, The Nazareth Village wants to express its sincere thanks to all current, past and future volunteers. Their partnership in our ministry consistently builds and strengthens the Nazareth Village community as well as the modern community of the city of Nazareth.
Opportunities to volunteer at the Nazareth Village can be found through our SERVE Nazareth Programme (page 14). Long and short term volunteering opportunities are available.
PRAYER BOX Give thanks for the unique and very special ministry of the Nazareth Village. Give thanks also for the many hundreds of volunteers who have blessed countless others and who have, themselves, been blessed by their time at the Nazareth Village since the work began in 2000. 8
Salt is white and it is pure; we should keep our life pure so that God can use us. Salt is cheap; as followers of Jesus we may not be valued in the eyes of other people. Salt gives taste to food; we are the flavour of this world. Light gives us guidance so that our life and our testimony can lead people to Christ. We may think that we are only small lights in a dark world, but we can still have an influence in people’s lives and situations. We should show the light and let it shine. As Jesus said, ‚Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.‛ SUPPORTERS’ BOX
The Chaplaincy Team are in very real need of your support. As a considerable contributing factor to the health and recovery of patients in the Hospital, and such a bold declaration of our faith, it is essential that this ministry can continue. The needs of this work are many, including financial assistance for staff and volunteers, right through to the purchase of items to support the ministry, develop our Christian Witness and bless the staff and patients of the Hospital If you would like further, specific information, please contact Joseph or Sue at Head Office.

OTHER NEWS...

s well as having 50 people at our retreat, we have been encouraged by the steady increase in the number of people coming to the hospital chapel meetings. On Wednesday mornings at 7.30am we have a short service with worship and teaching; on Thursday mornings at 9.30am we have a prayer meeting with a short devotion and worship. Hospital staff and international volunteers come to the meetings and Rev Suheil translates. To create a community spirit both staff and volunteers teach and lead worship.

Christmas 2010 MEET HANEEN OBEID
I
live in a small village in Galilee, Tura’an, which is near Cana. I am a member of the local Baptist church, where I am a Sunday-school teacher. In July I started volunteering at the Nazareth Hospital. I have been working as part of the spiritual ministry team with Rev Suheil. I come from a theology and church ministry background; I took my BA degree in theology in 2008 at the Galilee Bible College (a branch of Bethlehem Bible College). I also have a diploma in Nursery Teaching.
Rev. Suheil and some of the Chaplaincy Service volunteers Another area of encouragement has been the number of regular volunteers who are helping with ward visitations. One such person is Haneen who is featured on page 1. We are very appreciative of the time they give to the hospital and towards the chaplaincy ministry. We have a number of exciting events planned for the Christmas period, through which we hope to bring a sense of unity and goodwill to all those we can minister to, including a community Carol Service, carol singing in other Hospitals and gifts to families in need.
PRAYER BOX Pray for Haneen as she ministers and shows forth God’s light in the hospital. Pray for the Chaplaincy Team led by Rev Suheil. Praise for the new volunteers that have joined the Chaplaincy Team over the last 6 months. Pray for the Chaplaincy Team, staff and volunteers, that they would reflect Christ’s love and mercy. 12
Haneen bringing joy to an elderly patient in the Hospital For a while I have had a strong passion to work with sick people, and so I now serve at the hospital for 5 days a week. I spend my week praying and reading the bible with patients in various departments and wards. I have been able to build good relationships with the patients, especially on the Dialysis Department, where I visit 3 days a week. This department needs a lot of special care as the patients spend 3-4 hours having treatment. These patients need company; it also allows me the opportunity to pray with them. I am part of a team that is in the process of developing a special programme for the dialysis patients.

I
n July the hospital chaplain, Rev. Suheil, had study leave for two weeks during which he went to Larnaca in Cyprus to attend a 'Christian Leadership Training Course'.
SUMMER CAMP 2010
F
or five days at the beginning of August the Chaplaincy Team ran the third annual Hospital Summer Camp for children aged between 5 and 12. The camp was held between 8am and 1pm each day and this year there was a large increase in the children taking part. At the first summer camp there were 50 children, at the second 70, and at this year's camp there were 97 children taking part every day.

The course was run by 'Haggai', an international Christian organization. The 38 participants all came from the Middle East including Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Syria.
The course covered a multitude of relevant subjects, such as stewardship, worship, children's ministry and there was teaching about other faiths. At the end of the course there was a ceremony during which certificates were presented to the participants.
2010 STAFF RETREAT Hospital Chapel full of children for the 2010 Summer Camp! Most of the children were from families connected to the hospital, but this year there were also a number of children from the community around the hospital. There were volunteers from Nazareth with a large number of helpers from the USA, from the SERVE Nazareth Programme, and the Children’s Evangelistic Fellowship in Nazareth.
O
ur third annual hospital retreat weekend was held in November at Karea Deshe kibbutz, which is situated near the Sea of Galilee. The main sessions were led by Rev Ashraf who is originally from Egypt, but now has a ministry visiting and encouraging Christians in the Galilee region. His theme for the retreat was putting out into deep water. He encouraged us to be bold in our faith and not to remain in our comfort zone on the sea-shore, but to step out with faith into the deep water.
Each day there was a time of worship in the chapel and then the children went to age related Bible lessons. There were 14 different workshops the children could choose from; including cooking, crafts & a variety of sports.

We also had a workshop led by Rhadia & Cameelia who are social-workers at the hospital. The subject of their workshop was ‚Dealing with others‛. Joseph Main, Chief Executive, shared the spiritual vision and mission of The Nazareth Trust, and the weekend ended with communion led by Rev Ibrahim. We are very grateful to Nazareth Project Inc. in Pennsylvania, who raised funds to enable us to sponsor some of the delegates who were not able to pay the full cost. 11
