Appeals Newsletter

M

ay I begin by offering to you my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for your continuous support of The Nazareth Trust. As many of you will know our work in Nazareth relies on the generous assistance and support from well-wishers around the world.

Joseph R. Main Chief Executive

As we approach the end of the year I would like to provide you with an update on our fundraising activities over the last 12 months. Many of you will have already played a part in our achievements by way of involvement and giving. So, I pray that you will find encouragement from what you have helped us to start and also that you find an opportunity to help us continue to serve those who need us. To see our work grow and to serve the city of Nazareth and beyond we appeal to you for further support, and we welcome the offer of time, talents and financials. I am sure that together we can demonstrate the love of Jesus in action as we serve Him in His home town. This could be as simple as buying a book, joining us on our Jesus Trail sponsored walk or celebrating our School’s 90th Anniversary as well as providing a financial gift. We welcome your feedback and thoughts if this Appeals Newsletter has proved useful. Our plan is to provide this on an Annual basis, should there be demand. I pray that you will enjoy a Christmas full of joy and offer God’s blessing to you all at this time. Joseph R. Main

Chief Executive Officer

PRAYER BOX As a tree couldn't survive without its roots, without the generosity and commitment of our loyal supporters the Nazareth Trust would not be able to deliver its vital services to the Nazareth community and beyond. We pray for this continued generosity of spirit in the years ahead.

Cardiac Catheterisation Unit

T

he vision to create a Catheterisation Unit for the Hospital has become a reality thanks to the collective fundraising of the local community and the generosity of Nazareth Trust supporters. The ‘Heart to Heart’ Appeal was led by the local community and through various events and initiatives raised a staggering £1.57m million enabling construction work to start.

Mr Hatem Soabi lays a foundation stone

The Unit has already been approved by the Ministry of Health and at a recent ceremony businessman, Mr Hatem Soabi, laid the foundation stone on the site of the development. The state of the art building will drastically improve the treatment of cardiac related conditions. We are still short of our £2.18m target to complete and equip the unit which is hoped will open in 2014. Appeal Total £2,180,000

Amount raised to date £1,570,000

Amount still needed £609,000

Chaplaincy

T

he Chaplaincy service brings comfort for patients, visitors, students and staff. Under the supervision of Rev. Suheil Bathish, volunteers also help out with these regular visits. However, there is a need to recruit an additional part-time chaplain to deliver this service along with further volunteers. It is hoped that this will enable more staff study days to take place and extending the annual ‘Workers Retreat’, a week of teaching, worship and fellowship, the annual week long Suheil Bathish children’s summer camp and to buy relevant materials such as tracts, leaflets and books in accessible forms. Appeal Total £15,000

Amount raised to date £3,560.00

Amount still needed £11,440

Appeals Newsletter School of Nursing Bursary

H

elp us celebrate the School of Nursing’s 90th Anniversary in 2014 by supporting those of our nursing students who are struggling to fund their studies. To ensure the School does not lose the talents of such students and miss out on celebrating with us next year a bursary programme is in place to provide some financial assistance. Since the Spring we have received a number of grants enabling the scheme to continue but there are still many potential students that we lose due to financial reasons. We are now just short of £8,000 of being able to provide a full bursary scheme for the 2014 Academic Year.

SERVE, now in its 5th year still see the majority of volunteers self-funding their participation with us. However, we do have applicants who are unable to pay the full fees and our SERVE Bursary Scheme is available to them by offering financial support. We are grateful for receiving donations of £1,200 to allow more people to join the SERVE Programme but are still short of the £10,000 target.

Appeals Newsletter Chapel Refurbishment

F

or the last 50 years the Chapel has seen the gathering of God’s people for worship and instruction from which they then enter a world of service. In order for this to continue and the need for additional space by the Chaplaincy we need to undertake a refurbishment programme. This will ensure the Chapel buildings can continue to be a place of both fellowship and commissioning. Next year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the chapel. We have been delighted by the gifts given to date but are still £9,000 short of the required amount to make the desired changes. The Chapel was opened in 1964 as part of a new building that also included a new nurses home, thanks to funding received from the Protestant Christians of West Germany. It accommodates about 150 people and services are held each Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday.

PK Vartan Endowment

A

s a legacy to his family’s connection with the Hospital, John Vartan, Honorary Vice President of the Nazareth Trust and great grandson of the founder, Dr PK Vartan, launched an Endowment Fund. The intention is to raise £10 million to develop and train future doctors and nurses.

Adopting the same pioneering spirit of PK Vartan, The Nazareth Trust is also seeking to develop the educational success of the children and P K Vartan young people who are patients in the Hospital wards as well as extend the care and provision of treatment for patients with mental health conditions and provide a support system of palliative care to patients approaching the end of their life. Regular donations are invited to make these visions possible.

upporter, Levette Callander, has cooked up a novel way of raising funds for the charity by producing a cook book with recipes gathered from worldwide volunteers and supporters, past and present including many missionaries. “More Than A Menu” features contributions on starters, main dishes and desserts sourced from many different countries but, as its title suggests, the book also features memories and reflections of the Hospital, along with proverbs and inspirational anecdotes, and Bible quotes. Get Involved Cell Groups

W

e are keen to set up local supporter groups across the globe to encourage positive action to ensure the ongoing support of the work of the charity. Following a simple and informal format, the Groups could seek to initiate – 1. Spiritual support and prayer for those currently involved as well as those who have been involved in the work. 2. Activities to promote greater awareness of the work in Nazareth and the background to that work. 3. Fund raising activities towards general or specific agreed projects in organisations such as churches, schools etc. 4. The sale of goods and products produced by and/or for The Nazareth Trust. 5. Encouraging visits and pilgrimages to the Holy Land to include an extended stay in Nazareth to visit the work. A minimum of five people are recommended to establish a Group and guidance can be provided from Head Office. For example, a representative of The Nazareth Trust could arrange a visit to The Board of MNIF together with our own Trustees and explain the executives visiting the Nazareth Village history and the work in Nazareth, as well as how a Cell Group can support the work. Brochures, newsletters, banners and collection boxes can also be provided. Meetings can be held to suit the group, monthly or quarterly and we recommend that the meetings should be prayerful rather than social, and any time spent together should be profitable. However, the format is entirely dependent on the Group. An advice pack with details on how to set up a Cell Group are available by contacting Shaun Newton at shaun@nazarethtrust.org.uk

PRAYER BOX We pray for the success of our AudiBible project: that it provides comfort and support to all patients during their stay at The Nazareth Hospital.

Get Involved 90th Anniversary for School

W

e invite you to join with us in celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the School of Nursing and two major events will be held in 2014 to celebrate this historic milestone.

Entrance to the School of Nursing

In recognition of the links between the School of Nursing and Edinburgh, which has seen many city students visit and volunteer in Nazareth over the years, a special commemorative 90th Anniversary Lecture, will take place in Scotland’s capital. Supporters are urged to save the date of Thursday 18th June, and more details will be provided in due course of the day, time and venue when the lecture will take place. September 2014 will see a Jesus Trail Sponsored Walk take place to help raise funds for the School’s Bursary Fund. The welcoming of the walkers to the School on Thursday 18th September will see the celebrations begin. The following day a number of key events to mark the anniversary are currently being planned, involving as many of the students, and staff, as possible. In recognition of the links between the School of Nursing and Edinburgh, which has seen many city students visit and volunteer in Nazareth over the years, a special commemorative 90th Anniversary Lecture, will take place in Scotland’s capital. Supporters are urged to save the date – week commencing Monday 9th June – and more details will be provided in due course of the day, time and venue when the lecture will take place. The School of Nursing was established in 1924, eight years before electricity arrived in Nazareth, and was officially opened as part of the new Hospital by the British Governor of Northern Palestine. Today the School welcomes around 254 students each year who work towards their Nursing qualifications. Entrance to the School is highly sought after and a great number of applicants are, unfortunately, not successful. However, the students, on qualification, are equally highly sought after for their skills. Hence the need for our School’s Bursary fund as outlined on page 4.
