SUMMER 2014
WELCOME TO THE NAZARETH TRUST I DO HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY THE FRESH NEW FEEL AND THAT OUR NEWS WILL CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE AND INSPIRE YOU IN YOUR PRAYERS AND SUPPORT OF OUR WORK IN NAZARETH AND BEYOND. 2014 IS SHAPING UP TO BE AN ExTRAORDINARY YEAR - FULL OF THE LORD’S GRACE AND PROVISION AND, IT SEEMS, A YEAR IN wHICH wE ARE BEGINNING TO SEE THE EMERGENCE OF FRUIT FROM THE SEEDS SOwN IN RECENT YEARS.
Not least of these is the construction of the new Catheterisation Unit in our Hospital. This is the most significant capital development project our Hospital has seen since the completion of our state of the art operating theatres in 2009. The unit, costing some 8.5M ILS (approximately £1.46M) will have a massive impact on the health of the local community in Nazareth, improving survival rates and quality of life after heart attack for all those in the area. The unit would not be possible without the generosity of local

and international supporters of the Hospital, not least of which was a local school in Nazareth, which started the fundraising campaign in the most inspiring way by the students approaching residents of one of the poorest areas of Nazareth and securing 10 ILS each from 1,000 residents in order to be able to present a cheque to our Hospital of 10,000 ILS. This truly has been a project rooted in the community for the community. Other inspirational news includes the completion of our first independently-run sponsored event - ‘The Jesus Trail’ walk which raised funds for the Chaplaincy Service. Read more of this event, which so deeply blessed participants and recipients alike, on page 04. And for testimonies of how our work continues to touch the lives of those we serve and those who come to serve, see pages 13 (School of Nursing), 06 (Seeds of Hope) and 07 (SERVE). Another major development for us this year so far has been the extension of our work and mission out into the West Bank. After five years of development, planning and negotiation, we started serving the people of the West Bank from our Hospital in January of this year. Read more on page 09. This edition is, however, tinged with a sense of sadness, as we include the obituaries of Dr Cooney Maddock, Dr Fred Holmes and Moira Baikie. All had been faithful and longstanding supporters of the Hospital in word, deed and with

their own resources. Though they will be missed, we know they have been received into His Kingdom as good and faithful servants. Their lives set a standard of humble Christian service that most of us will be unable to meet. We hope our work continues to bless and encourage you. Please, continue to support us with your prayers and gifts as we seek to serve, heal and teach in the name of Jesus. Joseph Main, Chief Executive Officer of The Nazareth Trust

THERE IS A CONSTANCY WITH GOD THAT IS BEYOND COMPARISON.
One thing I recommend to you... stretch your legs in Galilee this September! Yes, there’s an opportunity to join a sponsored walk to raise money for the School of Nursing - please read more about it on page 13. I had the opportunity to join the walkers who completed the Jesus Trail in March this year. It was amazing to hear not just how much they had enjoyed it (despite bringing a touch of British

Our volunteers play a crucial role in our work in Nazareth. Here we talk to the Rev David Smith about his time with our Chaplaincy team.
HE IS UTTERLY FAITHFUL AND DEPENDABLE THROUGH HIS COVENANT LOVE FOR US. wE SEE CLEAR SIGNS OF THIS IN OUR SUMMER NEwSLETTER.
We celebrate with you the 90th Anniversary of the School of Nursing, the lives of people who have served and who are now serving so faithfully to the work in Nazareth, the incredible provision of a facility for cardiac catheterisation in the hospital, and so much more. We are grateful to God for all His goodness and I hope you enjoy reading more about this.

OH HAPPY DAY... IT IS AN EXTRAORDINARY THING TO IMAGINE WALKING THE SAME PATH AS JESUS, AND YET 12 OF US GOT THE CHANCE TO DO JUST THAT, NOT ONLY METAPHORICALLY AND SPIRITUALLY BUT ALSO PHYSICALLY, AS WE RETRACED HIS JOURNEY BETWEEN CAPERNAUM AND NAZARETH. OUR ITINERARY MEANT wE DID THE ROUTE IN REVERSE – ACTUALLY JOURNEYING BACK TO wHERE IT ALL BEGAN TO THE STILL BEATING HEART OF CHRISTIANITY.
That was strangely fitting for the Nazareth Trust, although we did make the actual 55 mile walk so much harder for ourselves by choosing the uphill route. Heart-felt thanks go out to all the participants who walked with us on The Jesus Trail earlier this year to raise muchneeded funds for the ongoing work of the Chaplaincy Service. To date our walk has raised a fantastic £18,000. The five day trek saw the walkers complete, on average, 11 miles a day, climbing 1,500ft and descending 1,400 feet – almost the equivalent going up and down Ben Nevis twice.
Our intrepid fundraisers came from all over the world including the USA, Switzerland, Ireland, Scotland and England to participate in the first Jesus Trail Walk organised by The Trust. The journey began in earnest , starting at the Mount of Beatitudes with a walk down into Capernaum. Everyone could see the land was in need of rain and our prayers were answered that first afternoon as we arrived at the ruins of Magdala. We all knew how much the local population needed water for their families and crops but little did we know those first welcome raindrops would set the scene for the entire week, with soggy clothes, heavy clay and muddy boots – but but joyful hearts.
04 HEALING IN THE NAME OF JESUS SINCE 1861
Ronit, our wonderful guide for the week, was taken aback by the fact we wanted to complete the trail in reverse creating a more challenging climb. Ronit was so well-informed, each day was a revelation as she pointed out places of interest we know so well from the Bible, adding a new depth to our Biblical understanding. One of the highlights was to receive hospitality from the owner of an olive press near Zippori, who was Jewish and had given birth to her two children at our Hospital, demonstrating the inclusive ethos and reach of our work in the region.
D3218_NAZARETH TRUST NEWSLETTER S5_Layout 1 25/06/2014 15:35 Page 5
05 As the week went by, Ronit began to understand the importance for us of the precious moment we ended the journey in Nazareth – allowing us to celebrate with all the people that we were raising money to support. The walkers were able to give their testimony in a Service of Thanksgiving held in the Hospital’s Chapel at which we learn ed that there was a common theme for all the walkers of the deep bond and friendship to be found in the shared experience of God’s presence and while walking in Jesus’ steps. This was the first Jesus Trail we’ve organised but it was such a huge success we’re already planning the next. If you’d like to take part in a future Jesus Trail event just contact shaun@nazarethtrust.org or call +44 (0)191 5208030.

WAS HE THERE?
So did you feel, upon the lake, that ‘Sabbath rest by Galilee; The calm of hills above?’ Did you see the beauty of the birds and of the golden sun, Sinking to its evening rest beyond the Magdala shore; the promise of His love? And was He there along the way; those steep and stony tracks? Did He kneel upon that silent hill? And was it here He prayed and taught and healed And did his Father’s will? And as you walked along that path, down throughthe ripening fields, Did you hear the swish of cloaks against the barley stalks, As those twelve followed closely in His steps On all their many walks? And did you marvel at the wondrous flowers: The yellow mustard; the cyclamen so fair, And, brightest of them all, those red anemones; the ‘lilies of the field,’ That even Solomon, in glorious robes, could never quite compare? Did you feel the thirst from heat of day, And, like those other twelve so long ago, Have you drunk the living water that once He promised them? Is that a promise that you know?
And did the Servant King once wash twelve pairs of dirty feet Clean of that orange mud or dust? And could we do the same, Or give the task to someone else and look elsewhere for fame? And did you see a boy once pressing grapes upon that terraced hill? Did the blood-red wine pour from his feet, down upon that rock, As blood would one day flow from wounds upon that cruel cross? And would you grasp the gift of life he gave, or simply stand and mock? And did you feel the sharpness of the thorns upon that bush; The thorns that pieced His head and caused the blood to flow; A sacrifice for you and me? Is that a gift you know? And now, this journey at its end, you walk life’s further way, And climb the steep and rugged path to another promised land, Will you go alone, Or let Him lead you by His nail-pierced, loving hand?
Thanks to Dr Anthony Knight from Buckinghamshire in England who wrote a poem about his experience.

SEEDS OF HOPE VOLUNTEERS PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE LIFE OF THE COMMUNITY ON OUR CAMPUS. THEY COME TO GIVE AND SERVE, HOwEVER MANY QUICKLY LEARN TO ExPECT THE UNExPECTED AS ENGLISH METHODIST MINISTER THE REV DAVID SMITH RECENTLY DISCOVERED.
For three months our Chaplaincy team had the support of David, who serves in the Liverpool North Central Circuit … it was very soon after arriving in Nazareth that David realised his time with us would not pan out as planned. We asked David to answer a few questions about his time with us: What did you do during your three months in Nazareth? “I joined the chaplaincy volunteers as they conducted their daily ward visits to offer support, prayer and fellowship.” Was it as you expected. “No, I thought my purpose in Nazareth was to meet clergy from different denominations to see for myself how the Christian leaders in the place where Jesus grew up, where it all began, worked seamlessly in harmony?” I take it didn’t quite work out like that? “Well, that was my plan but God had a different one and I found myself drawn to work alongside the Rev Suheil Bathish, the Hospital Chaplain, and the Chaplaincy volunteers where I felt the love of Jesus being magnified.” So do you think that was the impact of Christians working together? “By working alongside Suheil and the Chaplaincy volunteers I experienced the impact of Christians not only working in harmony but also something even more moving - how that working in harmony resulted in the love of Jesus being magnified - and that same love reflected to people of all faiths as well as those of none.”
What will you take from your time there? “I have many stories to share but one that will forever be in my memory was when a Muslim woman, whose husband lay in a coma, stopped me one day asking for a prayer. I had got to know her well and could see the stress of her husband’s illness taking its toll. She herself was admitted to hospital and I found myself in a volatile environment with the family one side of the bed, the doctors on the other. As I prayed from the foot of her bed, a sense of calm and peace fell over the group. Later that week this same lady asked for Communion to be shared by the family in intensive care, an experience I will never forget. Sadly her husband died but it was an hour to pray with her and her family.” So it was a worthwhile experience that you think others might gain from? “My time at the Nazareth Hospital will stay with me forever. It was an opportunity to share God’s love with the patients and Nazareth community and I feel blessed by the moments of quiet reflection and prayer with the staff and management team during their busy days. I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity to work alongside Suheil to experience his fellowship and I thank God for guiding me to a place where His love is so apparent. We are all sowers, sowing the seeds of hope and this was a time and place I really felt the power of that.”

EVER wONDERED wHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A VOLUNTEER wITH US? wHILE IT CAN BE DAUNTING TO LEAVE BEHIND YOUR HOME, FRIENDS AND FAMILY, YOUR ExPERIENCE IS SURE TO BE ONE OF THE MOST REwARDING JOURNEYS OF YOUR LIFE, AS LAURA FAIRCLOTH DISCOVERED. Laura, a SERVE Nazareth volunteer from North Carolina, in the US, has documented her six-month stay on her blog ‘Here to Nazareth’ giving people an insight into what they can expect from their time with us. Funny and thought provoking, Laura’s blog helps people understand the work SERVE volunteers do for our Hospital, Chaplaincy Service, School of Nursing and at the Nazareth Village. Her blog covers diverse topics including; praying in another language, multicultural nativity sets, Thanksgiving at McDonald’s and what her day-to-day life as a volunteer. She’s not too keen on blood – a bit of a draw-back when working in a hospital – but her blog explains how she’s overcome that – spending many an hour on the dialysis ward. One of Laura’s most touching comments is in her chapter called ‘God in the dialysis ward’.‘ She says: “In the dialysis ward, with the blood pumping through machines and sleeping patients, I’ve seen a bit of God and his purpose for our world. “As a Christian, I cannot fix all that is wrong in the world. Pain, suffering, and death will always be around. But we can show God’s love in those situations, whatever and wherever they may be.” “Many people come to Nazareth as part of their pilgrimage to the ‘Holy Land’. They come to see the massive

Alternatively you can contact us on serve@nazarthtrust.org Basilica and the ruins of first-century Nazareth under it. The church is beautiful and most of the ‘holy sights’ are worth seeing, but that doesn’t sum up my experience in Nazareth.” “Yes, God is surely present in the beautiful church buildings with the light streaming through the stainedglass windows. Yet God also shines out of the eyes of the little old lady in the dialysis ward when she listens to her solar-powered Audi- Bible. “His love glimmers when we stumble through transliterated songs in Arabic for the patients. I’ve seen God the most in the dialysis ward in Nazareth, even though you can’t see the basilica. Laura was clearly moved by her time with us, and we are moved when she explains what she is thankful for in Nazareth. “I’ve gotten to know so many people, and they all care about me. In addition to the other volunteers, I’ve made friends with people at the hospital, Nazareth Village and Church. I’m halfway around the world, but I’m in no way alone. “I’m thankful for the time I’ve been given to learn Arabic, and the brain God gave me to learn and use it. Arabic is really hard. But I can usually make myself understood, and I can talk to people who don’t speak English. “God made a really amazing and beautiful world. Nazareth looks nothing like North Carolina, but it’s still beautiful with the palm trees and the flowers that bloom in November. The hills are more aptly described as steep mountains and have their own rugged sort of beauty,” she said. If you or someone you know who is thinking about volunteering point then have a look at Laura’s blog. www.heretonazareth.blogspot.com.
SERVE IS... SERVE Nazareth is a volunteer ministry based in Nazareth, Israel. We connect Christian volunteers with local ministries in Jesus’ hometown. Mark 10: 45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” INTERNSHIP: The 3 month internship has a dual focus: first to grow the Kingdom of God in Nazareth through your service and our second focus is to grow the Kingdom of God within you. Our hope is that interns leave Nazareth not only having made a difference in the community, but also impassioned to serve the Lord with all they have. ASSOCIATE: The SERVE Nazareth Associate programme is a flexible 1 - 6 month programme designed to fit into any schedule. Associates are similar to interns with the exception that they will be primarily self-guided. This programme is ideal for retirees or married couples. GROUP SERVE: Group SERVE is the branch of our ministry that focuses on facilitating Christian groups to come and serve in Nazareth. SERVE Nazareth can assist you in whatever type of ministry project your group wants. Whether it is building projects, children’s camps, prayer walking or relational ministry we can help your group come and serve. SERVE NAZARETH VISION: The vision of the SERVE Nazareth programme is to glorify God by bringing Christians from around the world together in service, to encourage the body of Christ in Nazareth and equip people for future ministry.

COMPASS POINTS WEST FOR THE NAZARETH TRUST’S NEW JOURNEY OUR WEST BANK PROJECT IS EXCITING, CHALLENGING, REWARDING AND A HEALTHCARE TURNING POINT FOR SOME OF THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST. • Time stands still for the people of the West Bank – this photo taken in 1910 shows a mobile clinic in the Nazareth region.
It has been an aspiration of our CEO, Joseph Main, and others in the leadership of the Charity for a number of years to somehow extend the services of our Hospital in Nazareth to the people of the West Bank. Joseph says...
FOR PEOPLE IN THE wEST BANK, THERE ARE SOME SIGNIFICANT AND PRESSING GAPS IN THE AVAILABILITY OF HEALTHCARE FOR THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES. CHILDREN ARE PARTICULARLY AT RISK.
“We are, by virtue of our near unique position, ideally placed to help those most in need in the West Bank. As an Arab general hospital operating within the modern state of Israel, we can bring quality services to those who need us most in a way that both respects and understands the culture of those we hope to to assist. What better expression can there be of the command given by the Lord Himself in Luke 10:9 than to extend this hand of help and support across the border from Israel to the West Bank in His name?”

It is with a sense of humbleness and joy that we announce that from January 14 this year, the Nazareth Hospital EMMS began delivering services in the Tubas area of the Jordan Valley.

09 After a number of years of discussion and negotiation between our Hospital, the Palestinian and Israeli Ministries of Health (as well as the local communities of the area) we arranged for the opening of a community clinic building. Although fully equipped and purpose built, the clinic had lain dormant and unopened for a number of years. Now, months on, it is open every week, with a working laboratory, x-ray, dental services, family planning, paediatric clinic and GP on site.
The rates of infant mortality are high and we have now extended our work to provide mobile check-ups for children of the Bedouin communities. We have also arranged with the relevant authorities the issuing of border permits to children needing surgery or significant medical attention in our Hospital. We have already started to form strong bonds with some of these communities and have identified the need for access to household medicines, first aid kits and basic personal hygiene items.
We are calling these ‘Medi-boxes’ and hope to be issuing one to every Bedouin family we come into contact with.
We will be launching a fundraising appeal later in the year to support with this effort, so watch this space.
We will also be undertaking a regular cycle to replenish the Mediboxes and will use those opportunities to bring community healthcare advice and education to the families involved.
Please pray for us as we build carefully and thoughtfully on these first steps – that the work started more than 150 years ago and which reached out to disparate communities even then – will grow and serve abundantly in 2014 and beyond – in His name from His home town.

programmes on healthy living to help prevent heart disease, not just treat it.” During the catheterisation procedure, an ultra-thick flexible tube is gently and painlessly pushed along a blood vessel under local anaesthetic towards the heart. Its progress is monitored by an X-ray machine. Catheterisation can be used for many purposes. These include detecting narrowing of the coronary arteries, measuring the pressure in the heart chambers, or even inserting a tiny balloon that can help widen narrowed heart valves.
Cardiac catheterisation is a way to find out detailed information about the heart and coronary arteries, and the new unit will make a huge difference to the local community and surrounding areas. Dr Bisharat, Head of Hospital said: “The hospital prides itself on working alongside the Ministry of Health and the local health organisations - sick funds - to tackle specific health issues of the local and Arab community.
10 HEALING IN THE NAME OF JESUS SINCE 1861
It’s particularly useful in assessing the condition of children and babies with certain kinds of congenital heart disease – they are usually kept asleep with a general anaesthetic during the procedure. Catheterisation, which usually only takes 30 minutes, provides a fairly non-invasive way and rapid to diagnose and treat conditions that otherwise might require surgery. The new unit – which has been built at a total cost of 8.5 million ILS (£1,46m) - will open doors for the hospital to establish the extent of the issue in the area. Because it is such an accurate process, It will also assist medical staff in identifying patients early on in the progression of any heart disease or illness, hopefully before they require major intervention. Dr Bisharat said the opening of the catheterisation unit would mark a new chapter in tackling the serious health concerns of an entire population – and he praised everyone who has put such an effort into raising funds to make it happen. “Thank you to those who have supported us and the Heart to Heart appeal, our patients say thank you – you have really made a difference.”

13 MAKING A DIFFERENCE THAT LASTS A LIFETIME “KNOWING THAT WE’VE MADE A DIFFERENCE IS A HUGE MOTIVATOR FOR THE FACULTY AND STAFF AT OUR SCHOOL OF NURSING” SAYS DR. AMAL KHAZIN, DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL. wE ARE ABLE TO DO THIS NOT JUST BY TAKING AwAY PAIN, HEALING AND wELCOMING NEw LIFE INTO THE wORLD BUT ALSO BY TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF THE INDIVIDUALS wE TRAIN.
As we mark our 90th anniversary thousands of students have passed through our doors and moved on to great things in their nursing careers – many have now also become teachers, training others and spreading our positive influence further.(It is said that to find a health care establishment without a Nazareth nurse in the Galilee is very rare!) There are scores of examples to show just how vital our work at the School of Nursing is… but sometimes it takes just one story to make the point.
RR (who is a real person, so we are protecting his privacy) did not have the easiest up-bringing, his life at home as a child was filled with fear, aggression and poverty. His father was in and out of his life and had run up huge debts. At the age of 12 as the eldest sibling, RR had to work to put food on the table for his mother, brothers and sisters and to ensure bills and debts were paid. He took any work he could find including working in a restaurant and at a blacksmiths. With so much responsibility to bear he turned to drugs for relief, as so many young people do. However after realising he’d hit rock bottom RR somehow found the strength to fight back and decided to change his life. He applied to the School of Nursing and despite failing at his first attempts persevered until he passed and was accepted as a student. RR told us what a difference being part of the School of Nursing had made to him and his very proud family. “Before being accepted into the School of Nursing my life was a mess. Here at the school I started to get to know the teachers. “I noticed the warm environment and the relationships between me and the teachers. I started thinking differently and took this new communication style back home. “I started relating to people around me, especially my classmates, in the same caring way that teachers treated me. It gave me hope that things could change throughout my life, it was like a candle lighting the way for me. “My brother wasn’t doing well at school but I noticed that he was good at cooking, so I worked hard and paid his tuition fees to take a cookery course. In turn he started working and studying for more courses in
cooking. He also started helping the family and me – leaving me more time to concentrate on my study and pass exams. “I am having the best years of my life at the school. I am learning a new style of living - built on good communication, care and forgiveness. I like all the teachers and think of my class coordinator as a second mother. “Now so many possibilities are opening for me to work - the School of Nursing has really changed my life and the lives of my family, and I hope to do likewise in the future.” The students are a testimony to Amal Khazin, Director of the School, and her team – their compassion, understanding and kindness makes a lasting impression on all of the young people they work with. So if you ever get the chance to visit the school you’ll find a place where a feeling of ‘love’ is apparent in every classroom, every office and through the actions of every teacher. Education is a gift we are grateful for – along with the chance to help shape and form these young people’s life skills and values for the future. *Public celebrations to mark the School of Nursing’s 90th anniversary take place at the hospital on Thursday, September 18

IN MEMORY OF OUR DEAR FRIENDS FRED HOLMES - 14TH NOVEMBER 1939 – 12TH FEBRUARY 2014
ALTHOUGH FRED LEFT NAZARETH IN 1978 WITH HIS FAMILY, HE NEVER LOST HIS LOVE OR INTEREST IN THE HOSPITAL, HIS ARAB COLLEAGUES AND HIS FRIENDS IN THE WIDER NAZARETH COMMUNITY. Having made an impression as a medical student in Nazareth in 1961, Fred was invited back to the hospital in 1964 to join the surgical team as a junior doctor. He made a worthwhile contribution to the surgical workload as well as being loved and accepted by the people he had gone to serve.
The hospital did not want to let him go. So after further study in the UK, gaining a qualification in obstetrics and gynaecology as well as completing his surgical training, Fred returned to Nazareth in 1969 with his wife, Judith.
Fred also actively fulfilled the other aspect of the hospital mission statement ‘To Preach the Gospel’ - by speaking in the hospital chapel, taking ward prayers and being much involved in the local Brethren church as a loved and faithful member.
Their arrival brought joy, and there was further rejoicing in October 1969 when Elizabeth was born - now it was the Holmes family in Nazareth.
In fact, on his last visit to Nazareth in 2012, Fred spent a day visiting a Brethren church in one of the local villages teaching and encouraging - a life of service to the end.
Fred was a great colleague to work with, not only because he was medically able in a number of different fields, but also because he was able to instil confidence in everyone and was always kind and jovial in the work place. These are muchneeded qualities, especially when working in the tensions of the operating theatre.
Fred will always be a part of Nazareth. He has joined the ‘Great Cloud of Witnesses’ that encourages us to keep on ‘running the race’ – and he is finally witness to having finished that race. We thank God for Fred’s life, so faithfully lived.
MOIRA TRAIN BAIKLIE - 4TH APRIL 1923 – 3RD JANUARY 2014
MOIRA, WHO SADLY DIED IN JANUARY, WILL BE FONDLY REMEMBERED BY EVERYONE FOR HER HELPFULNESS AND HER DEEP INTEREST IN OUR HISTORY. Moira worked as secretary to Dr John Tester for ten years in the head office of the EMMS in Edinburgh. She was familiar with the work of the organisation from her sister Runa (Mackay) who began working as a doctor in our hospital in the 1950s.
This family link led to Moira having a particular interest in the history of the EMMS, and she helped Dr Tester to write regular articles about it in the Healing Hand magazine.
Sadly, Moira never visited the hospital in spite of much encouragement. She knew all the staff by name and said she was afraid they might not like her if they actually met!!
Moira was always ready to search the archives for visitors who came to the office to enquire about particular missionaries or mission fields, or about doctors who had been EMMS students.
Runa says it is a personal joy to her to remember her sister as part of the history of EMMS and the Nazareth Hospital
It is largely due to her care for the history that so many of the archives have survived and are available for researchers today.
DR COONEY MADDOCK - 24TH JANUARY 1927 – 27TH DECEMBER 2013
IN JANUARY THIS YEAR WE WERE SADDENED TO HEAR OF THE PASSING OF DR COONEY MADDOCK. COONEY WAS A MAJOR SUPPORTER OF THE NAZARETH TRUST AND THE HOSPITAL AND DEDICATED OVER 10 YEARS OF HIS LIFE ACTIVELY WORKING IN NAZARETH. Dr John Tester invited Cooney to join the medical team at our Hospital and he started there in 1959 with Margaret and his one-year-old son, Simon, and stayed until 1970. According to his family these were his defining years. Alongside the local staff, he joined three expat doctors John Tester, Hans Bernath and Runa Mackay, who,
together with Cooney, covered the basic domains of hospital medicine. During these years, Cooney was one of several doctors, nurses and technicians from the world over, who were drawn to serve; among them Bob and Nancy Martin, Bevan and Elmer Woodhead, Fred Holmes, Janet Baker, Philippe Hugonet, and the Fischer family from Switzerland. Together, they sought to bring the best medical service to a predominantly Palestinian Arab population it was a service of Christian love to Christians, Moslems and Jews alike. This vision corresponded closely to Cooney’s sense of vocation. He learnt to speak, read and write Arabic. Kamal Abdou, the hospital’s chief laboratory technician, recently recalled Cooney’s encouragement to him and other Arab hospital staff to meet together for Bible

study and prayer. He remembered Cooney persuading him to assume leadership responsibilities at Christchurch, Nazareth’s Arab Episcopalian Church. In his professional capacity, Cooney’s research was published in medical journals and his findings informed the hospital’s clinical practice. Indeed, the holistic nature of this shared vision – one to which Cooney so happily subscribed - has come to fruition in today’s Arab-led Nazareth Hospital, a forward-thinking centre of excellence with an enviable medical record. Following his time at the Hospital, Cooney continued to be a big supporter of the Hospital and EMMS from which came the Nazareth Trust. If he could find a way to help support fundraising and the profile of the work The Trust did he would.
