WELCOME TO THE NAZARETH TRUST

AuTuMN 2015 IT IS wITH greAT PLeASure THAT I weLCoMe you To THe AuTuMN eDITIoN oF our NewSLeTTer.

The interval since our last Newsletter has been characterised, at least in part, by that need to persevere and endure. Earlier in the year the School of Nursing appeared to be within touching distance of a resolution of our long-standing need to identify arrangements whereby our training programme could be recognised at degree level. Finalising that agreement has proved elusive and for the current academic year there has been a need to faithfully continue with our existing Diploma programme while patiently trusting in God as we continue to seek the right long-term arrangement.

In June work of the Hospital was threatened by a significant fire in a store room which required the evacuation of several wards, twice in the space of a few hours. The effective and well-disciplined manner in which that situation was handled, with no harm coming to any of our patients, testified to the dedication and professionalism of our staff, at all levels. That same commitment has been seen in the fact that such a disruptive and damaging event has not interrupted the sustained provision of all our clinical services.

At the Nazareth Village staff are having to cope with the impact of a new housing development immediately adjacent to the Village boundary. With the help of our friends from the Miracle of Nazareth International Foundation (MNIF) a shielding wall and line of trees are being put in place and tour commentaries enhanced with the use of new headsets. Finally, the absence of a CEO has an inevitable impact on the dynamics of decision-making and management in any organisation.

At the time of writing I am not yet in a position to confirm the outcome of our appointment process. What I can however gladly and gratefully confirm is the faithfulness and commitment of the leadership team in Nazareth and the staff at our UK Head Office. Their willingness to shoulder additional responsibilities, and to work together flexibly and patiently in the midst of uncertainty and change has ensured that this interim period has seen services sustained and work progressed, something to which the rest of this Newsletter bears clear testimony. In all of this we remain grateful to God who is endlessly faithful through all the seasons of our life, work and ministry.

The role of spiritual director is continuing to evolve and develop and a Spiritual Ministry Advisory Group is in the process of being formed to provide guidance and advice on spiritual matters for The Nazareth Trust. “One of the first tasks of this group will be to develop a strategy to strengthen and develop the Christian life and witness across each of the entities of the Trust based on thoughtful and sensitive application of the Christian principles and heritage of EMMS Nazareth,” said Frank. “Kindly pray for the work of this advisory group as we commence this important work and for the on-going work of the Nazareth Hospital, School of Nursing, Nazareth Village and SERVE Nazareth programme at this challenging time of transition for the Trust. “Events and developments have included a workshop on the spiritual dimension of palliative care and a study day for staff and volunteers on Jesus’ teaching on the vision and values of the Kingdom of Heaven.” Frank also celebrates the launch of the Audi-Bible project which aims to see around 1,000 audio-books containing information useful to patients at The Nazareth Hospital.

“We arrived in Nazareth during Easter and have now journeyed through Pentecost and beyond which has represented a symbolic journey from the disorientation and bewilderment of entering a new cultural context, to a place of greater clarity of vision, purpose and service by the empowering grace of the Holy Spirit! “We are most grateful to God and all those who have been praying for us over this period which has not been without its challenges and difficulties, and at times have genuinely felt carried by the prayers and support of others.”

Frank said: “The Summer Camp for the children of staff and associates of the Trust organised by the Pastoral Care Committee and the Child Evangelism Fellowship also took place in the School of Nursing, and had a positive spiritual impact on the lives of 75 children and 25 support staff who attended.

“For all this and much more we are profoundly grateful to God and look forward to continuing the journey of faith and spiritual transformation we have embarked on in Nazareth in the confidence that the Lord will continue to lead and guide us in the way that we are to walk as we are guided by the Holy Spirit.”

It’s challenging being in a situation with a culture that I don’t fully understand and having things arise that I didn’t plan on or necessarily want to deal with.”

Alayna spent time with the other SERVERS clearing a garden for The Nazareth Trust and found plenty of food for thought as she cut back overgrown shrubbery. “Although the space was overgrown and needed a tremendous amount of work, I could see the beauty behind it. I had a picture of what it perhaps was in the past, or at the very least, what it could be in the future.

“God keeps refining and working on us so that we may grow into the image that He holds for each of us. He is in each of our lives and sees the beauty that He can work in us and we have to let this happen so that we can grow into His vision for our lives. “I know that no matter what path I take, God is with me and I will make a difference in this world through Him. “Trust God’s timing. In Nazareth under the leadership of the Rev Suheil Bathish the team continues to visit patients on a daily basis to provide that ministry of presence - by sharing God’s love with them, listening to their concerns and anxieties, and praying with them for their personal and family needs.

This ministry relies on the presence of God found through prayer and via meditation on the Scriptures important disciplines in the lives of chaplaincy team members. This team is made up of local and expat volunteers and is often complemented by SERVE Nazareth participants and teams of international visitors to the Holy Land. Recently visitors from South Africa and the United States provided an interesting cross-cultural experience for patients in the maternity and dialysis wards of the Nazareth Hospital with their own take on ministry through presence. Their visit was marked by a service of thanksgiving which was in addition to the regular services on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

The regular services continue to provide spiritual nourishment for the Christian staff and volunteers at the Hospital and School of Nursing and attract more new worshippers all the time.

In partnership with the presence of God, chaplains bring calm to chaos, victory over despair, comfort in loss, and sufficiency in need. “Chaplains practise the presence of God through prayer, rites, rituals, listening, the spoken word, the Holy Scriptures, and acts of service.” (Paget and McCormack, )

A recent gathering brought the team together with 20 children who were taught about Jesus asleep in the boat and how he calmed a raging storm (Matthew 8:24) – to encourage the children to call on the Lord in times of trouble. The children were also presented with school bags, gifts from Sunday school children from Nazareth as a token of their love and support.

After leaving the army after the war, Mildred went to Nazareth - at about the time that Dr Runa MacKay joined the staff - to become a valued member of the ex-patriate team of doctors and nurses there. In 1964, back from Nazareth, Mildred was at the Church Missionary Society's College in Chislehurst, and then she sailed for Pakistan and the Missionary Hospital at Quetta, near the Afghanistan border. After missionary service, Mildred returned to England and began to explore a vocation to the religious life. She joined the Community of St Andrew, an order of professed Sisters working as Deaconesses, mostly in London. Her work was largely with the homeless and addicts. Mildred retired to St Nicholas Hospital, within the close of Salisbury Cathedral. Even though it is more than 50 years since Mildred left the Nazareth Hospital, she is still remembered by those who served alongside her. Mme Odette Tester recalled only recently: “Whatever and whenever the emergency, Mildred would be present. She was the most faithful person, and when she prays for someone, she does pray! She was a blessing to us. “I remember our happy days in Nazareth. I myself am now 95 years old and waiting for the invitation from heaven to join the rejoicing crowd! Be blessed, and thank you for being the one and only Mildred".

Such is the demand for a nursing education that we were asked to reopen the registration; however we had already determined our intake for the new Academic Year. Interestingly, many of those who requested that registration be reopened were young men, who often struggle to gain the opportunity of studying nursing at a higher level. Traditional Arab culture has not seen nursing as a male occupation, yet male nurses are an integral part of the nursing care offered both within our Hospital and the Israeli healthcare system at large. Many of our male student nurses have become role models for their friends and family members. The fact that many of the 114 students who graduated in 2014 were male suggests that the stigma and barriers which previously existed are diminishing. It remains the dream of Dr Amal Khazin, the Director of our School of Nursing, that it will soon be possible for nursing to be as accepted as a profession for men as it is for their female counterparts.

Amal Khazin congratulating School of Nursing students on their Graduation.

Open to all, without distinction, our Nursing School is both typically Christian, and run in sympathy with the values of Arab culture. When it opened in 1924, the School operated in the basement of the Hospital, but since 2005 it has been located in its own purpose-built building dedicated to training nursing staff. The Nazareth Trust School of Nursing, through unconditional service to all in the name of Jesus, helps to give improved life chances to young people from a minority group - and equip them with the means to support their families.

Our agreement with Haifa University has come to an end and we continue to pursue a secure long-term arrangement for the provision of a BA Nursing Programme.

Improved facilities have led to raised standards and enabled us to accept more students, so we can educate even more young people who might otherwise struggle to find a place in Israeli society.

In the meantime, Professor Shoshana Riba, Israel’s Head Nurse, has allowed us to continue to deliver the Nursing Diploma, including the BA to RN Transition Programme that is currently in place.

Access to education is a key tool to minimise cultural and religious tensions. We seek to continue to develop further the School's message of successful working in a potentially fractured and divergent society.

07 Dr Bishara Bisharat, Head of Hospital, treats a child during a mobile clinic.

How do the clinics work? At the moment, the Hospital arranges a clinic one day a week in consultation with local advisory teams. Sometimes this might be adults or children, for the treatment of arthritis or another specialised condition. To date we have sent specialists including paediatricians, orthopaedic consultants, plastic surgeons and neurologists. The Hospital sends the medical and nursing team, along with the medications and supplies needed for the patients. They meet the patients in a tent in one of the villages, always making sure to bring as much water as possible, which is in very short supply in Area C. How do the people get to know about it?

HELp Us sAVE LIVEs IN tHE wEst bANk wE AskEd dR bIsHARA bIsHARAt, HEAd Of tHE HOspItAL, tO tELL Us A LIttLE AbOUt tHE MObILE OUtREACH wORk IN AREA C Of tHE wEst bANk. There aren’t many ways to communicate. So the local Sheikh is informed about the time and speciality and he announces it from the Mosque to make sure people know when the clinic is happening. How many people come? At the start, we used to see four or five patients each time. Now we are seeing around 20 people! The word is spreading and as a result, the demand is increasing. what are the needs of the people? The needs are varied and simple problems often become larger because of the inability to get immediate care. Common needs include: · Prosthetic limbs, both arms and legs, due to injuries from landmines and accidents but there is no availability of prosthetic limbs in this area or funds to purchase them. · Treatment and plastic surgery for burns. The way of life in this area where permanent structures are forbidden, involves cooking on primus stoves and dealing with flammable materials on a daily basis. This means that burns are common, especially in children.

what can the Nazareth Hospital do to supply these needs? As we observe the increasing needs of the population in this area, our desire is to do more to help. There is a clear need for additional clinic days. As the only healthcare provision in this area, this is essential to make a lasting difference. We would also like to provide more specialist doctors and medical teams as needed to serve this area. what do we need to achieve this? There are many things that we already provide for these clinics, in terms of medication, expertise and transport but when we see the depth of need, it is clear that we need more resources. Many patients need surgery in Nazareth. In addition to the difficulties of bringing them from Area C, the expense of admission costs needs to be covered. Many patients need specialised prostheses, in order to function in their daily lives. These life-changing limbs cost from 10,000 – 40,000 NIS per prosthesis, depending on function. Support and donations will allow this work not only to continue, but to expand and reach even more of those who have no other access to healthcare. We at the Nazareth Hospital believe in germinating the good seed in every person which is LOVE - because by love we can help and cure many patients. Our strategy and spiritual vision through the Nazareth Hospital is to cure and heal the sick as Jesus Christ healed the vulnerable, weak and needy. Therefore we ask individuals, institutes and associations to support this programme as we follow the teaching of Our Lord Jesus to help the vulnerable.

· Treatment and plastic surgery for Leishmaniasis. This condition is caused by parasites which create skin lesions and often serious scarring. Spread by flies, it is most commonly seen in children. Dr Youssif Nijem examines a young patient

Dr Nakhle Bishara, the visionary behind the Village, spoke with love and passion of the founding team’s vision to help pilgrims see the Nazareth that Jesus knew and to hear Jesus’ words, especially the parables, with First-Century ears. The Village has been a tremendous success, with 67,000 visitors passing through its doors last year. Special thanks were given to founding director, Mike Hostetler, who came with his wife, Ginny, from Canada and Sherry Herschend, who came all the way from the USA to represent the Miracle of Nazareth Foundation.

Cary Summers of MNIF, joined the evening, together with Joseph Main, former CEO of The Nazareth Trust, and Morgan Jamieson, Chairman of The Nazareth Trust Board. Sharon Swarr formally handed her Executive Director role over to Maha Sayegh, while Bader Mansour, Chairman of the Nazareth Village Board, and Dr Nakhle Bishara, founder and treasurer of the Nazareth Village organisation, signed over the stewardship of the Village to the trustees of The Nazareth Trust.

Morgan Jamieson also spoke on behalf of The Nazareth Trust trustees, expressing their commitment to safeguarding the ongoing work of the Nazareth Village.

"There is a deep desire on the part of all who come to Nazareth to see Jesus. but for centuries, all they could see was dusty stones. That is why I proposed a place where visitors could see those ancient stones come to life and witness the vineyards and olive trees Jesus used to teach spiritual truth. I am excited that this dream is now a reality. Levette Callander and Lynda Redpath are ready to welcome visitors.

Almost 1,000 bags were distributed - a worthwhile exercise we’d love to repeat. It was great to see many supporters of the work in Nazareth throughout the day and we hope some of those we spoke to will support the work by joining SERVE or by knitting a teddy bear. Thanks go to Jenny, Kate, Levette, Marc and Mike who assisted Lynda Redpath and Shaun Newton on the day.

The purpose of this programme is to share and learn from each other’s experiences in dealing with this curable congenital condition. The CURE team will be back later in the year when Scott Reichenbach, Operations Director for the CURE club foot programme, will visit the Hospital’s weekly clinic. It was wonderful to see Sherry Herschend and many of the Miracle of Nazareth International Fund (MNIF) team at the handover of the Nazareth Village to The Nazareth Trust. MNIF continues, through Cary Summers, to provide invaluable support, prayer and resource in growing the ministry of this first century museum.

Karen Rauch and Jason Allgire from Nazareth Project Inc (NPI) are busy supporting the Family Consultancy Exchange programme that was funded by a private donor from the USA. The Nazareth Board of Trustees is very much looking forward to meeting with the NPI Board in March, something that has been a long time in the planning. Also, as always, Karen has been amazing in working in partnership with Dr Suzy Srouji from the Hospital in putting together this year’s application for the ASHA grant. Thanks also go to Jason Yakelis, who helped Karen include our work with CURE in the application.

Its construction was overseen by Dr Frederick Scrimgeour not long after the land was purchased in 1906. But as you’d expect the last 100 years have taken their toll on the building, which is used primarily by our SERVE participants. A programme of refurbishment has now been planned, beginning on the ground floor, with a team of ten willing volunteers from several different churches in Northern Ireland, enlisted through LIFT (Labour in Faith and Trust).

The aim is to provide a single communal lounge and kitchen for each floor with all other spaces being converted to either, en-suite bedrooms or family suites increasing the capacity of the Doctors’ House and providing more opportunities for people to come and SERVE in Nazareth. The project will take around four years to complete.

This year the request is for funding towards the paediatric ward extension and our work in the West Bank.

Dr Bishara Bisharat, Head of the Nazareth Hospital, has been invited to speak at the Presbyterian Church of Wheaton, Chicago in October. The team is also busy arranging other speaking engagements to spread the word about the Hospital during the trip. Elizabeth McClean of LIFT said “It was a great privilege to serve God by working with The Nazareth Trust and SERVE Nazareth in the town where Jesus grew up.” As you can imagine we cannot allow these restorations to detract from our other ministries and so we are appealing to our supporters to help us ensure the opportunity for serving God in Nazareth is not hindered by a lack of basic, yet adequate, accommodation.

please complete the form enclosed if you’d like to donate – we’d love to hear from you. www.NAzAREtHtRUst.ORg

Give thanks for those who guide the work of the Trust - the Board and Executive Team. Ask God to give them the wisdom and drive to achieve great things in His name as they serve Him with humility.

Give thanks for the wonderful ministry of the Nazareth Village. Ask God to bless all the staff and volunteers and to bring increasing numbers of visitors to understand Him more deeply through the parables that Jesus told.

Ask God to open the eyes of His people throughout the world to the plight of Christians in the Land. As more people learn of the work of The Nazareth Trust, may our work and message bless Christians wherever they are.

There will be more about the 175th celebrations in our next newsletter – but why not book your place on the walk now? And, if you can’t make it in April, there’s an earlier chance to take part as we are also organising the walk from Monday, November 16, to Sunday, November 22, 2015. The trip offers the chance for people to experience important sites from the life of Jesus, along with other religious and historical sites in Galilee and participants are asked to raise £1,500 for the Trust’s work. This time around the donations will go towards the SERVE programme which encourages people to show their faith by working for The Nazareth Trust in Nazareth.

Shaun Newton, Head of Resources and organiser of the walks, said: “Anyone interested in the Jesus Trail can give me a call – it is a very memorable experience and a great way to raise money for the Trust’s work.” “Overnight accommodation is provided en route and walkers stay and enjoy the company of local hosts, who will help them gain a true understanding of the area and its religious and political complexities.” to find out more contact shaun at Head Office on 0191 5208030 or email shaun@nazarethtrust.org.

Most of the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry went on show last year and a few people with connections to Palestine/Israel (mostly with Tabeetha School in Jaffa) were disappointed that there was no mention of the regions. It was requested that this could be included and two panels were designed. With almost every one of our 27 stitchers had a connection with one of the four institutions featured in the panels. Designed by Andrew Crummy, who also designed the famous Great Tapestry of Scotland, which tells the whole history of Scotland. The tapestry will be on display in Prestoungrange, Prestonpans, in East Lothian, going on a world tour, May 2016, returning to Scotland in 2017. Kate Harris and Maha Campbell took part in stitching a panel of the Diaspora Tapestry from the Palestine / Israel section.

the Nazareth trust will be working closely with EMMs International to mark the 175th anniversary – so we’re rather hoping some of our supporters sign up for the exciting sounding triMalawi Challenge (see above). And, of course, we hope that we’ll see some of our EMMs International friends on the Jesus trail walk in 2016.

The panel features the four main institutions founded in the region in the 19th century, including, of course, the Nazareth Hospital EMMS In the middle of the right-hand section of the panel you’ll see the faces of Hospital founder Kaloost Vartan and Mary Anne Stewart, and above that, the EMMS symbol (stitched by Kate).
