SYNO

SYNQ, formerly known as the Ozone Park Station, draws upon the characteristics of a vibrant and diverse neighborhood to reinvent the abandoned railway. Since the closure of the station, the site houses multiple businesses that provide services for the community. Therefore, preservation is just as important as the design intervention. SYNQ proposes activating the ground plane by introducing a continuous pedestrian artery (path) beginning and ending on grade at 101st Avenue between 99th and 100th streets. The path provides two modes of entering SYNQ. It will climb the exterior of the old station for a more direct access to the top or you may enter through the multilevel marketplace. The marketplace is unified with the path thus allowing unrestricted natural circulation.

The vision we have for the abandoned railway will serve as a commons in which business owners, families, and visitors take co-ownership of the space. The evolution of our design will allow the community to control the space based on immediate needs. SYNQ represents the initial spark for more imaginative uses for the cultural greenway.

Built landscape retains and transports rainwater through the underlayment of what used to be train rails; allowing for immediate reusage within SYNQ’s public gardening program.

COMPONENT 1: MulƟ Model Transit Hub

VIEW POCKETS

COMPONENT 2: FOOD/ HEALTH/ EDUCATION

TRANSIT HUB: The abandoned sanitaƟon facility would transform into a transit hub for the public. The shell is maintained and the interior becomes a place of culture.

NOURISHING COMMUNITY CENTER: Environmental outreach for promoƟng urban agriculture and Nourishing HQ health programs.

FARMSCAPE BLOCKS: Project component creates public farm space controlled by Nourishing NY and funcƟons as a “classroom” would.

LIVING INFRASTRUCTURE NYIT Thesis 2011_ Segrate, Milan The Living Infrastructure revises the idea of the tradiĆ&#x;onal megaform. It is an eco-armature which brings forth a new dimension of accessibility within the city of Segrate through local and regional forms of infrastructure. The built infrastructural environment has now become a place of occupaĆ&#x;on in the Contemporary city.

FACADE perFORMance Facade with purpose(s) that include shading for the units, water collecƟon; also funcƟoning as a porous and scaped surface for pedestrians.

LIVING_RESIDENTIAL Total of 165,000 sq Ō of new residenƟal community

LIVING_LAMINATED PUBLIC DOMAIN A performaƟve and volumetric landscape which collects rainwater for re-use while maintaining the properƟes of a leisure greenscape.

ELECTRIC LIGHT RAIL (localized transportation system)

PEDESTRIAN BIKE PATH (pedestrian layer

LAMINATION A conƟnuous morphed ground that Ɵes together new programs with the exisƟng city fabric through various pedestrian infrastructures.

LIVING_COMMERCIAL 20,000 sq Ō of new businesses directly connected to the “laminated public grain”.

ECO-POCKET Using the immediate context of the large lakes, this is a response to the polluƟon within the city’s water. Water purificaƟon is vital in Segrate’s rehabilitaƟon.
