God’s message (2:1-10), (“within” and “without” - meaning extensive content - literally both sides). He who would deliver God’s Word must first digest it. Note Ezekiel’s preparation for preaching to others. He fed on the Word (3:1-3); He spoke the Word plainly in their language (3:4-6). The people’s deafness to the Word was not to dampen his passion in preaching the Word (3: 7-10). Ezekiel’s name means “seized by God” and only a man seized by God can be sustained in a rebellious culture (3:11-16). Preaching with no burden leaves people empty. Teaching which only leaves people with someone’s personal dreams of success is vain. Lightness in the pulpit that removes the burden to fulfil the commands of God and our Lord Jesus Christ does not edify the body of Christ, or expose the sins that are destroying God’s people. 2. Ezekiel is called upon to represent God through Visual Communication, (Ezekiel 12:3). A key phrase in Ezekiel 12 is “in their sight”. Ezekiel was to use drama to portray his message. Symbolic
drama was used several times by Ezekiel to support his preaching of the Word. Ezekiel, in this chapter, has two visual-effects sermons to perform and will be called upon to do many more throughout his ministry. He was told to dig a tunnel and prepare his baggage for moving, and eat and drink his meals with trembling (12:1-16). The first was a picture of the king’s vain attempt to escape God’s judgment by Babylon; whereas the prophet’s trembling was intended to demonstrate the importance of taking God’s judgment seriously. It was his way of announcing a “News Alert” or “Storm Warning.” One lesson to be learned from Ezekiel’s visual communication is that visual communication was meant to reinforce the verbal message of judgement not replace it with an entertaining alternate message (Ezekiel 12:2; Isaiah 6:9). A second lesson is that God wanted Ezekiel to be a live-action sermon in their sight (12:1-7). The message cannot be separated from the messenger. Ezekiel was not using the visual communication to win a

His preaching was receiving a “thumbs up” for performance but God gave the people a “thumbs down” because they heard and paid no attention to the content and reality of the message (Ezekiel 33:30-33). God desires for men to know Him and He will be known through His love (John 3:16) and His judgment upon Israel in His dispersion of them throughout the nations (Ezekiel 12:14-16).

Just around the corner is our annual men’s rally and this year’s theme is “Pioneer Men.” Greg Sanford, Director of Mobilization for New Tribes Mission will be sharing experiences from his years of service in the jungles of South America. We are looking forward to another great event as hundreds of men come together for a weekend of spiritual refreshment.

//A Faith That Is Your Own// As we peruse through the book of Acts, we should come alive with excitement and passion as we recount the exploits of those early Christians. Their bold and daring actions should embolden us to follow Jesus in that same daring way. So powerful was the work of God that Acts 19:11 says, “And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul.” God was doing extraordinary things through the life of Paul; things that left an indelible mark upon all that witnessed them. On to the scene enter the sons of Sceva, wandering Jews who went from place to place practising exorcism (Acts 19:13-14; Matthew 12:27). In seeking to conjure up the evil spirit to depart from a certain man, the spirit answered them and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know: but who are ye?” (Acts 19:15). What are we to make of this statement? The main point seems obvious. Always remember that spirituality and power cannot be borrowed from somebody else or simply passed along like some cheap commodity. The failure or success of your walk with God will be determined by your faithfulness to God, the cultivation of your own prayer life and the dedication you put into knowing God’s Word. The sons of Sceva knew the power of Jesus and that of Paul and they sought to imitate it and claim it for themselves. If only the Christian life were that easy. You cannot imitate the faith of others and have victory.Your faith and your power derived from God must be your own, borne out of a relationship with Jesus that you must cultivate at great cost.

HOMEGOINGS Walter Ray Jr., a graduate of 1957, went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2013. Walter was a pastor and teacher for many years. Shirley (Rafter) Rowley, a graduate of 1947 (our first graduating class) went home to be with the Lord on September 19, 2013. Shirley and her husband, Mallory (’48) spent more than 25 years in Chad, Africa and France as missionaries. Francis Clark, a graduate of ’63, went home to be with the Lord on September 21, 2013. Fran served as a missionary in Chad, Africa for 39 years and France for 7 years. We apologize for the error in our September Open Bible Bulletin regarding Mrs. Marilyn Bell. It was not Mrs. Bell who went to be with the Lord, it was her sister-in-law, Dorothy Barr. Dorothy (Berry) Barr, graduate of 1957, went home to be with the Lord on May 28, 2013.
