The New Testament, from Matthew to Revelation, challenges believers to eagerly and hopefully anticipate the return of Jesus Christ. Matthew challenges believers to “be ready” for His coming and not foster an attitude in their hearts that somehow might delay His coming.

Lack of anticipation, according to Matthew, is the mark of an evil servant not an expectant servant (Matthew 24:4449). This same heartfelt anticipation for the return of Christ is seen in Hebrews 9:27-28 where the phrase “unto them that look for him” contains the idea of eager anticipation. The book of Revelation ends with a heartfelt prayer of the writer in response to Jesus saying, “behold I come quickly.” The writer shows no desire for delay but responds, “Even so Lord Jesus come.” May we pray, “come for Your church.”

The Right Man Is At The Right Hand of God

Too many people often reflect pride in our institutions, churches, governments or powerful individuals to bring about a moral righteousness and stability to this chaotic world. The psalmist sees the right man is Christ, seated at the right hand of God. According to Psalm 21:8-13,

ultimate power in this world will come from “the right hand of God” which is a slogan for God’s powerful deliverance of His people as in the exodus from Egypt.

(Exodus 14:16 & Psalm 17:7). The psalmist identifies the enemies of God as those with illusionary plans and dreams which are doomed to disaster when Christ returns. (This time Christ returns with His church.)

“For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform...

Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.” Psalm 21:11 & 13.

The victory prayed for in Psalm 21 is seen realized at the coming of the Messiah. This is the song of Israel’s remnant, acknowledging Christ at last as Lord of all. Let us not be fooled by the promises of leaders, nor fear the threats of evil nations and evil men, but have faith in the exalted Prince and Saviour at the right hand of God. See Him standing to receive believers at all times as He did for Stephen in Acts 7:55. Stephen was not focused on those stoning him, he died focused upon Christ standing to welcome Him.

PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE

This One Thing I Do! Multi-tasking! To me that is a frightening word. The proverbial joke between men and women is that they can multi-task and we can’t. I recently went through a drive-through at Tim Horton’s and the lady at the window was making my coffee, preparing my bagel, taking the next person’s order and talking to her trainee all at the same time. I was getting a headache just watching her. In fact, if I had been in her shoes, I am certain smoke would have been coming out of my ears.

Our world promotes this frantic way of living and with technology at the forefront more than ever before, the myth that we can multi-task has never been greater. Yes, that is right, multi-tasking is a myth, and research has proven it. The idea that we can do many things simultaneously is simply not factual. Neuroscientist Earl Miller says, “People can’t multi-task very well, and when people say they can, they’re deluding them-

selves.” Miller, a professor of neuroscience at MIT, says that, for the most part, we can’t focus on more than one thing at a time. What we can do is shift our focus from one thing to the next with astonishing speed. Switching from task to task, you think you are actually paying attention to everything around you at the same time, but you are not. You are not paying attention to two things simultaneously, but switching between them very rapidly. Miller continued by saying, “Think about writing an e-mail and talking on the phone at the same time. Those things are nearly impossible to do at the same time. That’s because of what is called interference between the task. They both involve communicating via speech or written word and so there is a lot of interference between the two.” Researchers have said that in their clinical testing they can actually see the brain struggling.

Many Christians are trying to multitask. They think they can juggle their walk with God and still go after the best this world has to offer. They are seeking God’s kingdom and theirs and they are deluded into thinking they can do both at the same time. As Earl Miller said, “What we can do is shift our focus from one thing to the next with astonishing speed.”

The apostle Paul said, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14). Paul did not try to balance his agenda with God’s, or his plans with God’s, or his desires with God’s. God never intended us to be multi-taskers, our desire should be like Paul’s, “this one thing I do.”
