Remember that “understanding” is better than “knowledge”. Understanding does not mean that you have all the details to every question sorted out in your mind. I have many times used the Pythagorean Theorem in making sure that a deck is square. In theory, it states that the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the two sides containing the right angle. Are you confused yet? Well, that is geometry. All I know is that when building a deck, that theory will help you get that deck perfectly square. Don’t ask me to prove it on paper. That is not easy, at least for me. But I don’t need to have complete knowledge of the theory to have an understanding that it works.

It is understanding that we most need and yet often lack. Don’t spend all of your life studying the path only to forget to walk it yourself.

JUNE 23-29 & JUNE 30-JULY 6

Summer months provide an opportunity for us to accomplish projects which cannot be completed during the school year. No matter what your skill level is, we can use your help. Here are some of our projects that we are considering for this summer: shingling the back side of the roof on our dining hall (the front side was completed a couple of years ago), renovating one of our staff houses to make way for our newest staff family (the Grants) to move on campus, finishing the office carpeting, renovating our ladies’ dorm and various other carpentry, painting and general maintenance projects. Camp NBBI will be held for children ages 5-12, during the second week, June 30 - July 6, with a full program of activities such as hiking, swimming, games, and lessons from the Bible.

and we are caretakers of all that He has given to us. His one requirement is that we be found faithful.

The Way of Faithfulness

2) Servants will eventually be evaluated and judged by the Lord (vs. 3-5). It really is irrelevant for people to evaluate one another. We can’t even truly evaluate ourselves. There is coming a day when the Lord will carry out His evaluation of His servants’ work. He knows what our motives are and His evaluation and assessment will be spot on.

God wants you to be a person of understanding. This might be a candidate for the most obvious statement of the year but this is truly His desire for you. I think it should be noted that Jesus was concerned with this issue. In Matthew 13:13 he said, “Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.” I often think that there must have been a little wire in man’s brain that shorted as a result of the fall. Now, as sinful human beings, we can listen to God’s Word but not really listen. We can see the Hand of God but not really see it. We can learn the Bible but not really know it. The Psalmist was all too aware that this could be the reality in his life and ours. Speaking about God’s Word he said, “Give me understanding, and I shall keep Thy law.” (Psalm 119:34).

What the Psalmist was striving for and what Jesus was warning about is the pursuit of information that is often void of transformation. It is the accumulation of facts without a life of faith. It is the compiling of data that doesn’t translate into discernment. It is a head full of knowledge but feet that aren’t treading down the path to which knowledge points. It is a quest for learning without the ability or desire to translate that learning into careful and wise living for God’s glory. If the name of the game was the acquisition of knowledge, then Jesus would have been proud of the Pharisees and yet His disdain for their brand of religiosity could not have been more apparent. They had spent their lives compiling facts, yet none of it made any difference in their lives. Our prayer should be “Lord, make me understand Your Word.”

Give Me Understanding

Oswald Chambers said of the Lord Jesus, “The one dominant note in His life was to do His Father’s will. His is not the way of wisdom or success, but the way of faithfulness.” Scripture is clear when it speaks of the faithful character of our Lord. Hebrews 3:1-2 describe the Lord Jesus as “...Christ Jesus who was faithful to Him who appointed Him...”. It is no surprise then, that those who are called to be servants of the Lord are also called to be faithful. In 1 Corinthians 4:1, we find the Apostle Paul using two words to describe the one who would do the Father’s will: servants (a bottom level galley slave with no ambitions of his own) and stewards (a house manager who takes care of someone else’s goods). Each believer is called to serve the Lord with the truth that Paul expressed in 1 Corinthians 4:1-13 in mind. We are under-rowing slaves and the Lord has given us His grace, and the truth that we can know from His Word. 1) Servants are to be content with their roles (vs. 1-2). We serve Christ

3) Servants are equal with other servants (vs. 6). We can’t begin to think of ourselves as better than someone else.

4) Servants are sometimes called upon to suffer (vs. 9-12). Paul esteemed himself to be a man condemned to death and one who was a spectacle to the world. He was determined to serve in the present tense as his future was unknown to him. JOHN HOAG May 8, 15, 22, 29 Danforth Baptist Church Danforth, ME Extension Classes
