Nobody likes to be lost - that feeling when you look around and realize you have no idea where you are and how to get where you need to go. The same is true for life! Without a map or a clear set of directions, how do we know where we are to go and how to get there? Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” NBBI is a place to come and learn the map for your life.

The famed 19th century Presbyterian evangelist Wilbur Chapman told of a pastor friend who delivered a powerful sermon. After the service, one of the church officers confronted the minister in his study and offered what he thought was some needy counsel. “Pastor,” he said, “We don’t want you to talk as openly as you do about man’s guilt and corruption, because if our boys and girls hear you discussing that subject they will more easily become sinners. Call it a mistake, if you will, but do not speak so plainly about sin.” The pastor removed a small bottle from the shelf behind his desk. Showing it to the man, he said, “You see this label? It says ‘Strychnine,’ and underneath in bold red letters is the word ‘poison’. What you’re asking me to do would be like changing this label. Suppose I

write over it ‘essence of peppermint.’ Someone who doesn’t know the danger might use it and become very ill. The milder the label, the more dangerous the poison becomes!” It must grieve the heart of God that when the world tells the Christian to “tone it down”, we oblige by softening the blow of our words. The justifications for such a step are many. Some say “we need to show them we love them”; “we don’t want to turn them away”; “they won’t listen to us if we offend them”; “doesn’t God call us to be people of love?” Yes, we need to demonstrate the love of Christ and yes, our lips need to be marked by grace. But, in an attempt to be relevant, we often change the label and the people are still drinking poison. Romans 7:13 says, “… that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.” The Law says that sin is “exceedingly sinful”. What in the world does that mean? “Exceed-

ing” has the idea of going beyond all bounds. It means there is nothing more sinful than sin itself. It is saying that the only thing worse than sin is more sin piled on top of it. Sin is not a harmless toy; it is a poisonous snake. The Bible teaches that God does not simply want us to see that we are sinful, rather He wants us to know that we are exceedingly sinful. In many Christian circles, others are being convinced to tone down the sin rhetoric, but the suggestion of Scripture is that we haven’t toned it up enough. The message of redemption, through the blood of Jesus Christ and faith in His finished work alone, becomes all that more impressive in the midst of the sober reality of the depths into which sin has plunged us. We are not simply sinners We are exceedingly sinful. Luke 7:47b says, “but to whom little is forgiven the same loveth little .” The deeper our understanding of our own sin, the more deeply we will love the One who has forgiven us. 1

PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE

LIBERTY HALL - MAJOR RENOVATION PROJECT

BY MATTHEW LITTLE

Geared To The Times But Anchored To The Rock 1944 brought the birth of New Brunswick Bible Institute. God had laid a burden upon the heart of Mr. John Parschauer to start a school to train believers in God’s Word. Soon after his dear friend, Ken Robins, joined him and NBBI was born. Since that time this school has spent the last 75 years training countless believers who have launched out to over 60 countries of the world and left a mark for Jesus Christ. Since the school’s inception in 1944, times have certainly changed. The average life expectancy in the 1940s was 63 years, a loaf of bread cost 8 cents, the average an-

nual income was $1,900 a year, a car could be purchased for $800, a stamp cost 3 cents, and the average home could be purchased for $6,500. The decades have brought an abundance of moral change - much of which has been to the detriment of society. Yet, the foundational purpose of NBBI and the core philosophy as to why we exist have never changed. The world is still in darkness and Jesus Christ is still the “Light”. People are still lost and Jesus is still the Way, the Truth and the Life. Times have changed; but the primary purpose of the believer has not. NBBI continues to stay committed to God’s Word and, although the world will continue to change, our

purpose and passion will remain the same. Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” The desire for a Bible school to be in Victoria Corner was both the will of God and the doing of God. It just so happens that God allowed some faithful people to jump on board and be part of it. I know that many who read this have also been a crucial part of NBBI’s journey, through their prayers and faithful support. We say thank you and our prayer is that you will continue to partner with us as we move ahead. Whatever the future holds we know the One who holds the future.

2019-2020 STUDENT ENROLMENT

We are finally making some much needed progress on our girls’ dorm. In recent years we have renovated our old library into “Bredin Suites”, a residence for up to eight ladies. Over this past summer, we renovated two rooms in our existing girls’ dorm and the pictures accurately portray the results. What a transformation! We have discovered that the dorm is a solid building, so renovating it seems to be the wisest course of action. This is our 75th anniversary year and we would like to launch a special fundraising project to our alumni and faithful supporters. Each room in the dorm will cost approximately $10,000 to renovate. Maybe God would lead you to sponsor a room, join with a group to sponsor a room, your church could sponsor a room, or you may want to give to the overall project. We are seeking to raise $50,000 to finish renovating one floor of our dorm. We feel

like we have gained some momentum, and with your help we are confident our lady students can all be enjoying new living spaces within the next three years. Please prayerfully join us in seeing this project through. Our goal would be to start the renovations this summer.
