Wisdom: What Is It? Wisdom has been understood as, “... love directed by knowledge.” (Charles Finney). Stephen Charnock considered wisdom to be, “...the flower of knowledge and knowledge to be the root of wisdom.” Others define wisdom as knowing how, not just knowing what. With infinite insight, the Holy Spirit counsels us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7). With Scripture in mind, consider:

Wisdom is more valuable than rubies (Job 28:18) or gold (Proverbs 16:16). God’s wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, easy to be intreated, merciful and yields good fruit. It is not partial nor is it hypocritical (James 3:17). It cannot be separated from holy reverence for God (Job 28:28). True wisdom cannot be isolated from moral excellence (Romans 1:14 Greek text). Biblical wisdom will lead one in the way of righteousness (Proverbs 8:20). Practical wisdom recognizes priorities in life and will pursue them with eternity in mind. II. The Need for Wisdom : We only live this life once and to do so without wisdom would be tragic. Wisdom is a defense; it gives life to those

who have it (Ecclesiastes 7:12). It is not something we are born with, rather it is something God gives to those who ask of Him in faith (James 1:5,6). The wisest of men once wrote “Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee” (Proverbs 4:6). King Solomon gave his heart to know wisdom (Ecclesiastes 1:17). Godly wisdom is deeply needed in ministry! It is like perfume to a marriage and is as a gentle breeze to daily routines. Proverbs 16:21 shows us the association between wisdom and prudence declaring that, “...the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.” We must recognize the difference between information and wisdom. Some people may collect a lot of information but have little or no wisdom. Perhaps today the need for wisdom is greater than ever as our dispensation progresses to its conclusion. With the rise of cults and as society moves further from biblical values, God’s people need to know and proclaim the wisdom that is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:3 teaches concerning Jesus, “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” The possession of wisdom will show itself in several different ways. God exclaims in Deuteronomy 32:29, “O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end.” The author of Psalm 37:30 wrote,

“The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment” (or “justice”). How great is our need for true wisdom? III. The Neglect of Wisdom : The Apostle Paul reminded us that we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7). Those who neglect wisdom and knowledge are those who choose not to fear the Lord and by doing so, they will, “...eat of the fruit of their own way” (Proverbs 1:29-31). On a positive note, “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding” (Proverbs 3:13). It is wisdom to put one’s faith in Jesus Christ!

PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE

A Strong Tower

Mankind has always been “tower builders”. It seems like every decade they are pushing the envelope of human ingenuity in their quest of reaching even higher. Currently the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is the tallest building in the world. It was completed in 2010 and is a staggering 828 meters high (2,717 ft) and has 163 floors. That is over 1/2 mile high.

First, it is a tower that is safe. This tower gives us safety and comfort because it is furnished with the promises of God. Matthew 11:28-29 reminds us that if we come to Jesus, the great and true Tower for God’s people, then we can find rest for our souls. What a thought, that as the storms of life rage against us, we can be warm and safe in the tower that God has built for us. Second, it is a tower that is secure. The safety we feel is one that is founded in the security that God brings to our lives. We may rest in God’s Tower for it is built by His omnipotence and nothing can topple it.

The events in the land of Shinar (Tower of Babel) unleashed an uncontrollable desire for man to ascend. This should not surprise us as the “prince of this world” (John 14:30) boasted that he would ascend and be like God (Isaiah 14:14). “Ascending” is in keeping with our sin nature, and in the spiritual realm, it is an affront to God. Proverbs invites us to run to a tower that is built by God and not man. What can we say about this tower?

But what about man? Of what is his tower made? Proverbs 18:11 reveals the answer. It says, “The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.” The world builds a tower of self-sufficiency. The foundation of man’s tower is his riches and the walls are built with his own conceit. In his pride and arrogance, he feels that his tower is indestructible or impenetrable. His perceived tower is nothing more than a house of

Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”

cards.1 Timothy 6:17 w a r n s such people when it says, ”Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches…”. Notice that riches and highminded deceit cannot be separated. But it is also significant that Paul calls those riches “uncertain”. If I was hunkered down in a home and the owner said, “I sure hope this house holds us”, I would be frantic to say the least. There are some significant storms brewing today in our world, not to mention the individual storms that may be raging in our own lives. Proverbs says that we need to “run into” God’s Tower. The only thing more foolish than not believing the Tower exists is believing It but not running to It for shelter. You can find safety in the “name of the Lord” today. To enter this tower is to put all of your confidence in Who God says He is and all He has promised to do. The Tower is there but you must take refuge in it!

Our Spring Conference will look much different this year. Due to the uncertainty associated with COVID-19, we are opting for a Celebration Saturday followed by our graduation on Sunday afternoon. A special day will be planned (details still to come) for our students with guests invited to attend. We will make accommodations available but space will be very limited. We will provide further information as the date approaches.

was to bring our minds to other lands, namely, to remember the persecuted church. We then ended our time together with each team praying for their team’s country and a certain missionary there.

All NBBI events bring the student body just a wee bit closer together, and the 2021 Freshman Banquet was no different. After much deliberation, abundant prayer and the direction of their student council, the banquet materialized into something that not only brought us together with food, fellowship and fun but helped us discover the true heartbeat of the freshman class. With a theme so versatile as “Around the World”, the class naturally planned an enjoyable evening. All the students had been given a faux passport to either Germany, Mexico, Korea, Israel, Brazil, Ghana or New Zealand, and they were to dress in the colours of that specific country’s flag. Students with the same country’s passport became a team and the people they sat with dur-

I am confident that many of our NBBI Open Bible Bulletin readers live in the United States or in Canada. I am from the US myself. God definitely has blessed us here with much freedom to do as we wish and to worship Him openly; we have much to thank Him for. Yet, we must not forget those on the mission field in persecuted lands. Did Jesus not say, “…I was in prison, and ye came unto me?” (Matthew 25:36). When asked “When?” He responded, “…In as much as ye have done it to the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Not everyone is able to physically visit those serving on the mission field or in prison for His name’s sake, however, everyone is called to pray. Let’s challenge ourselves to take time to leave our own world and our own wants and desires, and enter into other’s worlds, bearing their burdens to the Lord, kneeling before the throne of God, pleading for their help in time of need.

goal was to take a single tract from one end of the building to the other without being caught (tagged) by the government. Once they made it, or were caught, they could go back and grab another tract and try again.

Are you looking for a way to serve the Lord this summer? Plan on being a part of our Vacation with a Vision program. Every year, we are blessed by many of our supporters who come and get involved in helping us with various projects around campus. It is a great time of fellowship, we enjoy good food, and much work is accomplished for God’s glory. Come be a part of what God is doing at NBBI.

Projects: Our main project will be the renovation of the top floor of Liberty Hall (Ladies’ Dormitory). The middle floor has been completed and looks amazing. We want to keep the momentum going and complete the renovation of all the rooms. Wouldn’t it be great to have the inside of that building completely done

Financial Goal: Our goal is to raise $60,000 to complete the work. We have come so far in providing a new space for our female students at a fraction of what a new dorm would have cost. Help us get one step closer to bringing this project to a conclusion.

Of course, we had a fun evening, yet the heartbeat of the freshman class came through strongly at the very end, with the closing program. One member of their class had been asked to share the purpose of the theme, and that 3
