MATTHEW LITTLE October 8-11 Living Waters Fall Foliage Weston, ME Retreat

One aspect of this post-modern age we are living in is the seemingly constant questioning, doubting and deconstructing of traditional truths. We see it in almost every area of our culture and, at times, even among professing believers. The spirit of the age invites the individual to shun any sense of ultimate Truth, and instead construct individual truths that are somehow more palatable and convenient to one’s own way of thinking. In Ecclesiastes 1:9-10, Solomon reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun. Therefore, even that which seems to be a new way of thinking about truth is really nothing more than the repeating of an age-old lie. Very soon after creation (Genesis 3), Satan, in his initial interaction with humanity, encouraged this idea of doubting, deconstruction and reconstruction of Truth. From that initial interaction with the father of lies, mankind has sought to be self-determiners of truth. It never works out well. Consider Jesus’ conversation with some fel-

low Jews: “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31- 32 NKJV. To those who wouldn’t believe: “Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God.... Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He...does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell you the truth, you do not believe Me.” John 8:42-45 NKJV. Some of you may have people in your life who are currently rejecting the Truth of the Gospel. Don’t stop praying for them, and loving them. Some of you may be experiencing opposition by those who would like to destroy your godly heritage, deconstruct your confident faith, reconstruct your biblical values and undermine your identity in Christ. Don’t lose heart. Jesus is still building His Church and sanctifying His saints. Nothing, and no one will stop Him. Today is a great day

to spend some time enjoying His Truth. Today is a great day to obey His Truth as we stand, convinced and strengthened by His Truth. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV. “The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgements endures forever.” Psalm 119:160 NKJV.

BY MATTHEW LITTLE

Pleasing God In A People-pleasing World “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to keep everybody happy? Being a people-pleaser is like running on a treadmill convinced you are actually going somewhere. This is not to say that what others think of us shouldn’t matter. After all, life is about impacting people through practically living out the truth of the Gospel. The assiduous person will seek to win friends and influence people and this can hardly be done when we are needlessly offending others. But what happens when the choice is whether you should please man or please God? What does one do when upholding the standard of righteousness puts you in direct conflict with your fellow man? In such cases, we need to always strive for peaceful relationships with others but not at the ex-

c

pense of our obedience to God. When our walk with God comes in conflict with our relationship with others, it is never wise to seek to please men and offend God. Jesus knew that our desire to please God and please man may at times clash. In Matthew 10:35-36 He said,”For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.” What Jesus was helping us to understand is that desiring to please God above all else can potentially jeopardize some human relationships, even those that are dearest to us. It is never God’s intention for us to purposely destroy relationships that could otherwise be healthy, but, the truth has always had a dividing affect. The Apostle Paul who penned the letter to the believers in Galatia, had himself sought to please men before his conversion. He fought to imprison or even kill Christians because he thought it would please those

within Judaism. However, when he was saved, he said in Galatians 6:17, “From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.” The “marks” may refer to several things but physical scars are likely inferred. Paul had been beaten, stoned and lashed because he valued pleasing God more than men. In other words, pleasing God cost him much by way of his human relationships. Maybe you have chosen to maintain the peace in some human relationship at the expense of speaking truth because you value that human relationship more than anything else. Fear always drives such decisions. Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man bringeth a snare”, but Isaiah 8:13 says, “Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear....” Never forget that the relationship you value the most is the one you will protect at all cost.

Mark committed his life to serving his Saviour, Jesus Christ, at a young age and spent his adult life proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He lived his faith by serving those around him.
