BY DAVID DOHERTY Does The Bible Teach Jesus Was Virgin Conceived and Born? Perhaps the best place to start answering this question is to define the terms. The virgin conception and birth of Jesus was the method by which the second Person of the Trinity took on a sinless human nature in order to become the sacrifice for all humanity (1 Timothy 3:16). It is closely united with the doctrines of the incarnation (John 1:14) and impeccability of Jesus. This is a non-negotiable part of biblical Christianity which teaches that the virgin Mary became “with child” by a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit without any human male participation. 1. GOD REVEALED IT (Genesis 3:15). Before Adam and Eve were sent out of Eden, God promised that the Seed (singular, Galatians 4:16, 19) of the woman would come and bruise “crush” Satan’s head. “Seed” is a term usually associated with a male. Here, only the seed of a woman was involved. The Messiah was to be born of a woman, not a woman and a man. 2. ISAIAH PROPHESIED IT (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6). He wrote that the Child to be born, the Son that would be given would be Immanuel “God with us”, Matthew 1:23, and that His mother would be a virgin (almah). This Child is identified
as, “the Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) who is Jehovah Himself (Jeremiah 32:18). 3. MATTHEW EXPLAINED IT (Matthew 1:16-23). That Jesus was born of Mary, not Mary and Joseph, is observed in the words “of whom” in 1:16. “Of whom” is feminine singular! Then in 1:20 the angel explained to Joseph, “...that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost”. “Of” here is genitive of origin. The origin of Mary’s pregnancy was the Holy Ghost. 4. MARK BELIEVED IT (Mark 6:3). Mark identified Jesus as the Son of Mary. Usual Jewish reckoning would identify a child with the father, not the mother even if the father had been deceased for a long time. Mark also presents Jesus as the Son of God (Mark 1:1). 5. LUKE TAUGHT IT (Luke 1:26-35). The angel Gabriel told Mary she would conceive and that she would have a Son named Jesus. Mary questioned how this could be because she had not been involved in immorality. The angel advised her that the Holy Spirit would be the source of her pregnancy. 6. JOHN INCLUDED IT (John 1:14; 6:33, 35, 38, 51). John’s Gospel has a primary emphasis on Christ’s deity. However, he also taught that, “...the Word was made flesh.” The means by which the incarnation took place was through Jesus’
virgin conception and birth. Later, John wrote that Jesus is “the Bread of God” (6:33) and “the Bread of Life” (6:35), and that He came down from heaven (6:38,51). 7. PAUL PREACHED IT (Galatians 4:4; Romans 1:3). Paul proclaimed that at the right time God sent forth His Son who would be “made of a woman”. Romans 1:3 teaches that Jesus was, “made of the seed of David.” “Made” here is a second aorist participle showing an entrance into a new condition. For salvation to be real, one’s personal faith must be placed in this Jesus, God the Eternal Son, Who partook of our humanity and died for the sins of every person without exception (1 John 2:2).

PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE BY MATTHEW LITTLE
He Knows My Name At the risk of alienating the “yard sale” enthusiasts, I confess that I am not fond of rummaging through someone else’s belongings on a Saturday morning. Some reading this may be appalled at that statement if not outright offended. After all “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is the motto you live by. Unfortunately, my motto is, “one man’s trash is still trash when another man buys it”. I digress. It is true that on a rare occasion, a valuable item is found because the owner had no idea what they truly possessed. This was the case in the summer of 2007. A New York family displayed an antique bowl in their living room for years having no idea it had any value. Eventually, they sold it at a yard sale for a measly $3.00. The new owners became curious about the true value of the bowl and decided to have it assessed. The result was the discovery of a lifetime. The item turned out to be a rare 1,000 year

old Chinese bowl that sold at auction for $2,225,000.00. As Christians, we are often inept at seeing the true value of spiritual things. However, God does not make such foolish blunders. Psalm 139:17-18 says, “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.” Has it ever occurred to you that God thinks about you more than you could ever think about Him? If our minds could be laid out for all to see, we may be ashamed at how little we think about our Creator. However, God’s thoughtful care and concern for us is so vast, deep, and unfathomable that it can’t even be comprehended. In fact, if we were to take all of God’s thoughts for us and pile them up, they would be greater than all the sand on all the shores of this world. As one farmer keenly stated, “Wow! That’s a lot of thinking.” No
STUDENT TESTIMONY
wonder Paul declared in Hebrews 2:6b, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?” You see, God knows us better than we know ourselves. As 2022 begins, I want you to reflect on the biblical truth that you are on the mind of the God Who created you. He is keenly aware of you and in-tune with your life. How troubling it is that few Christians in our world ever fully grasp this. How about you? This year may begin with the same old troublesome problems that plagued you last year but it can at least start with the proper understanding that you are on the mind and heart of God. To not recognize that is to rob yourself of comfort and joy and it also robs God of the glory He desires and deserves. Now that is something to think about!
God is so far beyond what our minds can really grasp, yet He has given us His Holy Spirit and written Word that we might know Him. When it comes to the character of God’s perfect faithfulness, we just have to stand back in wonder. God tells us about His faithfulness in His Word, Numbers 23:19, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” What a joy to know that my eternal destiny does not rest on me trying to keep my promises, but rather, it rests fully upon the fact that God has promised to keep His Word.
It is a great joy to spend time at New Brunswick Bible Institute, and with the Word of God opened, we see from the beginning to end that God is faithful in fulfilling His Word. Just think about it; after it rains, we see a rainbow in the sky. Well that is because God promised to put it there, Genesis 9:1415, “And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh.” God has kept His promise, time and time and time again. The same God who promised to never again destroy the whole world with a
flood has promised to deliver us from our sin. You see, I, Mark Brillinger, am a sinner. I have made many decisions over the course of my life to follow my own desires instead of obeying God. Yet, God had a plan. He allowed His perfect Son to stand in my place and absorb the wrath that I deserved. Now, God has promised that, because I have accepted this free gift, I will one day be totally free from my sin, and have everlasting life. What a wonderful, amazing, awesome, loving God. There is truly nothing that can compare with Him!
