BY DAVID DOHERTY Does The Bible Teach Jesus Was Virgin Conceived and Born? Perhaps the best place to start answering this question is to define the terms. The virgin conception and birth of Jesus was the method by which the second Person of the Trinity took on a sinless human nature in order to become the sacrifice for all humanity (1 Timothy 3:16). It is closely united with the doctrines of the incarnation (John 1:14) and impeccability of Jesus. This is a non-negotiable part of biblical Christianity which teaches that the virgin Mary became “with child” by a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit without any human male participation. 1. GOD REVEALED IT (Genesis 3:15). Before Adam and Eve were sent out of Eden, God promised that the Seed (singular, Galatians 4:16, 19) of the woman would come and bruise “crush” Satan’s head. “Seed” is a term usually associated with a male. Here, only the seed of a woman was involved. The Messiah was to be born of a woman, not a woman and a man. 2. ISAIAH PROPHESIED IT (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6). He wrote that the Child to be born, the Son that would be given would be Immanuel “God with us”, Matthew 1:23, and that His mother would be a virgin (almah). This Child is identified
as, “the Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) who is Jehovah Himself (Jeremiah 32:18). 3. MATTHEW EXPLAINED IT (Matthew 1:16-23). That Jesus was born of Mary, not Mary and Joseph, is observed in the words “of whom” in 1:16. “Of whom” is feminine singular! Then in 1:20 the angel explained to Joseph, “...that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost”. “Of” here is genitive of origin. The origin of Mary’s pregnancy was the Holy Ghost. 4. MARK BELIEVED IT (Mark 6:3). Mark identified Jesus as the Son of Mary. Usual Jewish reckoning would identify a child with the father, not the mother even if the father had been deceased for a long time. Mark also presents Jesus as the Son of God (Mark 1:1). 5. LUKE TAUGHT IT (Luke 1:26-35). The angel Gabriel told Mary she would conceive and that she would have a Son named Jesus. Mary questioned how this could be because she had not been involved in immorality. The angel advised her that the Holy Spirit would be the source of her pregnancy. 6. JOHN INCLUDED IT (John 1:14; 6:33, 35, 38, 51). John’s Gospel has a primary emphasis on Christ’s deity. However, he also taught that, “...the Word was made flesh.” The means by which the incarnation took place was through Jesus’
virgin conception and birth. Later, John wrote that Jesus is “the Bread of God” (6:33) and “the Bread of Life” (6:35), and that He came down from heaven (6:38,51). 7. PAUL PREACHED IT (Galatians 4:4; Romans 1:3). Paul proclaimed that at the right time God sent forth His Son who would be “made of a woman”. Romans 1:3 teaches that Jesus was, “made of the seed of David.” “Made” here is a second aorist participle showing an entrance into a new condition. For salvation to be real, one’s personal faith must be placed in this Jesus, God the Eternal Son, Who partook of our humanity and died for the sins of every person without exception (1 John 2:2).
