FOCUS

BY DAVID GOUPILLE Refreshment Most of us are very familiar with the life of David from our Bibles. He is, of course, the man known by the Lord Himself as, “ a man after My own heart,” (Acts 13:22). So much of what we see of David is admirable. But, of course, we know there was another side. David knew colossal failures in his life. Many of his wounds were self-inflicted. From 2 Samuel 11 on, he is often challenged by the consequences of his bad choices and sin. Canadian publications mail product sales agreement #40012001

FAMILY FILE

One of those stories of difficulty occurs in 2 Samuel 16:5-14. David’s son Absalom has betrayed his father and is leading a full-scale revolt. David is on the run, heading away from Jerusalem. In the process, he meets a man named Shimei. This guy was a relative of Saul and he clearly didn’t think much of David. He was a skilled curser. It didn’t matter that what he said was inaccurate (16:7-8). He didn’t like David and let him know it. He was also a rock and dirt chucker (16:6, 13). When stones and dirt are thrown, it is always with malicious intent. He was also blessed with the ability to remind David of some of the deficiencies of his life. “So you are now caught in your own evil...”

(verse 8). David knew that this was true. There were those around David who could have helped him with the situation. “Just say the word, my king, and I will remove this man’s head from his shoulders.” What did David do? First, he looked up (verse 10). At this stage in his life, David realized that the Lord was in all things. This experience could not have come upon him without the Lord allowing it. How often do we forget this about the Lord? Secondly, he looked around (verse 11). David didn’t flinch from the blunders on his own record. His realization was that he was getting less than he deserved. David could say with Paul, “in me, nothing good dwells,” (Romans 7:18). We waste much effort in defending that which has no defense, when it comes to protecting ourselves. Thirdly, David looked ahead (verse 12). “It may be that the Lord will look on my affliction, and... repay me with good...”. David was looking for the Lord’s kindness, mercy, and grace. That is what we need in these difficult sections of this journey that we call life. The writer of 2 Samuel called it the way that it was (verse 14). “Now the king and all who were with him became

weary.” All of that walking, listening to cursing, and dirt-dodging took its toll on these travelers. So much of life beats on us, and that’s really wearying. Where does refreshment come from (verse 14)? David didn’t look within himself. He looked up, around, and ahead. Refreshment doesn’t come from within ourselves. The writer of Hebrews put it this way, “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God,” (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus died without defending Himself, standing up for His rights, His repContinued on page 2...

GRADUATION 2022

PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE BY MATTHEW LITTLE

The Pre-eminence Of God’s Word In Acts 20, we find Paul making his way to Jerusalem and then ultimately to Rome where he would stand trial for no other crime than that of being a witness for Christ. The powers that be were intent on making an example of this man that had dared challenge the status quo. On his way to Jerusalem, he stopped at Ephesus to speak one last time to the elders of the church. He had poured much into these men and this was his last chance to impart some words of encouragement. What we find is that Paul did not implore them to remember him or his words. Instead he leaves them with this main thought, “…I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace” (verse 32a).

We are so excited to announce that we will be having Ladies of Grace Conference this coming fall.

Whatever ministry Paul had among the Ephesian believers it was temporary and transitory at best. His days of personal interaction with these men were over. Our goal is not to make people dependent upon us, because we will not always be there. Instead, God’s presence and His Word will bear the lasting fruit. We are not the answers in people’s lives. Jesus Christ is the answer. My words are not what are going to eternally impact an individual; God’s Word is. Paul pointed these men to the Word of God and to the God of the Word. In 1852 David Livingstone began his journey across Africa. He started out with 73 books weighing 180 pounds. After several hundred miles, he threw away

several books to lighten the load. Then in the weeks to come more of his books needed to be discarded so the journey could continue. Eventually, he had thrown away all of his books but one - the Bible. In my travels, I often come in contact with people who claim to remember me speaking at their camp or church. I would like to think it was due to my well-formulated outline, or my powerful illustrations. However, most times what they recount is the impression God made upon them with His Word. No wonder John the Baptist said, “He must increase, but I must decrease”.

ference! Will you save these dates and plan to join us? We can hardly wait to have our chapel full, once again, with the hum of ladies eager to sit under the teaching of the Word and be encouraged through our time of worship and fellowship together. Please be on the lookout for an announcement of who we will have as a speaker and other details as we continue to plan, pray and proceed for this event! Can’t wait to see you here!!!
