President’s Challenge “The Power From On High” In Canada, almost 60% of the nation’s power comes from hydroelectricity. The majestic Niagara Falls are a well-known source of some of this power. The power plants there have the capacity to output close to 4.9 million kilowatts of power. That is enough to keep the lights on in 3.8 million homes. Where does all that power come from? Niagara Falls lies on the Niagara River between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Lake Erie is 169 feet higher than Lake Ontario, and approximately 750,000 gallons of water per second flows over the falls. This means that the fall of water provides the power. If the lakes were at the same level, there would be no power. This is true in our spiritual lives as well. Our spiritual power comes from a heavenly source. Jesus left the glories of heaven, died on the cross, rose victoriously from the grave and then ascended up into Heaven. He is our power source and far above us
in every way. If Jesus was just an ordinary man on the same level as us, there could be no hope, no life, no power. As the religious leaders challenged the authenticity of who Jesus claimed to be, His response to them was, “…Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world” (Jn. 8:23). God has called us to live a holy life and the power to do so comes from our Saviour who purchased our redemption with His own blood and is seated at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us (Heb. 7:25). Now that Jesus has ascended, we have the Holy Spirit who He sent to indwell us (Jn. 16:7-14). Are you looking unto the power source that is far above all else? In John 3:27 and 30-31, John the Baptist declared, “…A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. He must increase, but I must decrease. He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all” [emphasis added].
No matter what your struggles may be, no matter how many disappointments may come, no matter what failures have plagued you, and no matter how defeated you may think you are, Jesus is above all. He is truly the Power from on high. Matthew Little
