INo Hands But Our Hands

n Acts 3, Peter and John healed a lame man, and the religious leaders were upset that they preached and healed in Jesus’ name. The religious leaders arrested these men for teaching and preaching about Jesus in Acts 4. As a result of that detention, the disciples were forbidden to speak or teach in the name of Jesus (4:18). The saints were immediately summoned by Peter and John for a significant prayer meeting. They asked for power and boldness to continue proclaiming Jesus. In Acts 4:2930, they prayed, “And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.” Note that they prayed that Jesus would stretch forth “his hand.” What are the hands that Jesus now has on earth?

Jesus has a body, even though He is not physically present on earth today. The church, made up of believers who have been bought with Jesus’ blood, is the body of Christ of which He is the head (I Corinthians 12:27). God wants our hands to now be the hands of Jesus. He wants our mouths to be His mouth. Our hearts’ cry today ought to be, “Lord, I want to be your hands to this lost world, your voice to speak boldly the truth, your eyes to see the needs of the lost, and your ears to listen to the cry of the needy.

During WWII, a cathedral in Europe was bombed. It was a beautiful building with awe-inspiring architecture. Within that cathedral was a statue of the Lord Jesus Christ with His arms outstretched. As they were trying to put the cathedral back together after the war, some soldiers began to gather the fragments of the statue that had been broken to pieces and scattered in the rubble. They carefully put the pieces all together, but could not locate the statue’s hands. After they searched for some time, it became apparent that the hands would never be found. A soldier wrote these words and put them on the pedestal of the statue of Jesus: “He has no hands but our hands.”

Today we should be doing nothing less than what Jesus would have done if He were here in the flesh. Only one person has ever lived the Christian life fully and completely from start to finish, and that was Jesus Christ. And if we are to live the Christian life now, it has to be by Jesus living through us. Would you be willing to let Jesus extend His hands through you?

Men’s Retreat at Living Waters in Weston, ME

*What is Rikapuna? Rikapuna comes from a tribal word in Bolivia meaning “let’s go”. Rikapuna is a fun-filled missions weekend designed to help you grow in your understanding of God’s work in our world and His passion to see the unreached know Him. Experience informative teaching sessions, interactive tribal village simulation, bonfires, great food, and time spent with others in a beautiful camp setting. Our teaching sessions start with God’s plan and how that has looked throughout history. Is God working today? Are there people groups who haven’t heard the Good News? Where are they? And what does it take to reach them? We’ll discuss all this and help you discover the role that you can have in helping complete the Great Commission. This is a missions experience suited for high school and college students, adults, and church leaders.1
