MULTIFAMILY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT ON A SITE IN LITTLE ITALY. THE DESIGN STACKS SINGLE BEDROOM UNITS IN AN INTERLOCKING PATTERN THAT TAKES FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE WESTERLY VIEWS.
THE LANDINGS ON THE EAST SIDE WERE ENLARGED TO ACCOMODATE SHARED BALCONIES OVERLOOK THE PLANTED SLOPE BEHIND THE BUILDING. THE SHARED LAUNDRY IS LOCATED ACCROSS FROM THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN WHICH CREATES A COMMUNITY SPACE BETWEEN FOR THE RESIDENTS. THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL CREATED SMALL, INFORMAL SEATING AREAS ADJACENT TO PLANTERS FOR THOSE WHO PREFER A SMALLER SCALE.

THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS ARE COMPRISED AT THEIR MOST FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL OF TWO OFFSET CONCAVE CURVES. THE JOG OF THEIR OFFSET IS USED AS THE ENTRY POINT AND THE LOCTION OF THE BATHROOM. THE USER IS PULLED INTO THE SPACE AROUND THE INITIAL CURVE OF THE WALL AND ONCE INSIDE, IS GENTLY REDIRECTED BY THE SECOND CURVE TO ADDRESS THE GATHERING SPACE IN THE UNIT AND VIEW BEYOND. THE WHOLE OF THE DESIGN IS LAID OVER A GRID WHICH ALLOWS THE UNITS TO BE SEAMLESSLY ROTATED AND STACKED INTO THE OVERALL COMPOSITION.

PHASE 1 OF THE STUDIO WAS TO DESIGN A MULTIUSE, SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE USING THE DESIGN PRINCIPALS DERIVED FROM OUR DESIGNATED CASE STUDY: IN MY CASE CASA BARRAGAN. THE DESIGN WAS TO BE VIEWABLE FROM ANY ANGLE. I CHOSE TO EMPHASIZE CASA BARRAGAN’S PROPORTIONS, REQUIREMENT FOR PRIVACY, MINDFULNESS OF NATURAL LIGHT, HIERARCHY OF SPACES, AND LEVEL CHANGES TO DEFINE THOSE SPACES. USING LUIS BARRAGAN’S PRINCIPLES, I WAS ABLE DESIGN A NEW STRUCTURE THAT WAS UNIQUE FROM HIS WORK, BUT SHARED A COMMON DNA.

PHASE 2 GAVE US A SITE TO SPLIT WITH A PARTNER. I PROPOSED A SITE DESIGN IN WHICH OUR TWO STRUCTURES WOULD SHARE A COURTYARD AS IT WAS THE MOST EFFICIENT USE OF THE SPACE AND WOULD ENCOURAGE A SYNERGY BETWEEN OUR USES. THE DESIGN OF THE SITE AND MY BUILDING PLAY WITH THE CONCEPT OF PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT WHILE REMAINING WITHING THE CONTEXT OF BARRAGAN’S DESIGN PRINCIPLES. PRIVACY OF THE INHABITANT IS PRESERVED, BUT THE BUILDING IS ENMESHED WITHIN A LARGER SCHEME WHICH INVITES PEDESTRIANS TO LINGER ON BENCHES HES OR DESCEND OURTYARD. INTO THE SUNKEN CO

GIVEN THE OPTION TO WORK IN SKETCHUP OR REVIT, I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE TO HONE MY SKILLS USING REVIT. AS THE ONLY STUDENT IN THE E COURSE TO CHOOSE TO WORK WITH THE MORE INTRICATE PROGRAM, I SPENT MANY HOURS WORKING INDEPENDENTLY Y TO ADDRESS AND SOLVE ISSUES. THROUGH THE PROCESS, I GAINED INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE WITH MODEL BUILDING IN REVIT. STRUCTURE / INFILL
