AN UNCOMMON COMMON NSAD, SPRING STUDIO 2017 COMMUNITY CENTER BARRIO LOGAN, SAN DIEGO, CA

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY CENTER WITHOUT COMMUNION? A PLACE WHERE THOSE WHO MAKE UP THE COMMUNITY ARE INVITED AND GATHERED INTO THE ARMS WHICH THEY THEMSELVES ARE A PART. COMMUNITIES ARE INHERENT WHEN WE LIVE TOGETHER, BUT WITHOUT A FOCAL UNITY, THEY ARE VULNERABLE TO SPLINTERING AND SUNDERING.

DIVISION IS KNOWN ALL TOO WELL IN BARRIO LOGAN; THE PHYSICAL CARVING OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD LIKE A CHRISTMAS HAM RENT THE FABRIC OF ITS CONTINUITY, AND THE SOCIAL DISSONANCE CAUSED BY RISING LIVING COSTS AND CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS THREATEN ITS VERY NATURE. BUT THE BARRIO IS RESILIENT. THE TAKEN LAND THAT DIVIDED THE COMMUNITY WAS RECLAIMED AS PUBLIC PARKLAND AND MURALS WERE THROWN UP TO MEND THE GAPING TEAR.

MORE THAN FORTY YEARS ON FROM THE STATEMENT OF PLACE THAT WAS THE CREATION OF CHICANO PARK, BARRIO LOGAN’S CHALLENGE IS TWO-FOLD: CONTINUING THE PROGRESSIVE REVITALIZATION OF THE ONCE-FORGOTTEN COMMUNITY WHILE NOT LOSING THAT VERY COMMUNITY IN THE PROCESS. THESE TWO GOALS WHICH ARE AT SEEMINGLY OPPOSITE ENDS OF A TAUT CHORD, MUST FIND A WAY TO TURN TOWARDS EACH OTHER AND BEGIN TO PULL IN HARMONY.

THE COMMUNITY CENTER HAS AN OBLIGATION TO BE THE FOCAL POINT IN WHICH ALL PARTIES MAY COME TOGETHER IN COMMUNION WITH EACH OTHER. THE INVITATION FOR INCLUSION IN BARRIO LOGAN’S FUTURE IS THE ONLY PATH TOWARDS THE RESONANCE OF COMMON PURPOSE. ARCHITECTURE HAS THE POWER TO PROVIDE THAT PLACE; A PLACE WHERE STORIES ARE SHARED AND SHARED VALUES ARE FOUND.
