NORTH CAROLINA STATE-WIDE REPORT The North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NCAAHPERD), launched In-school Prevention of Obesity and Disease (IsPOD) in 2007. The initiative began with a grant from the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund and was expanded with grants from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. The expansion to a state-wide program is supported by a $3.6 million grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. NCAAHPERD is engaged with a large network of health and physical education groups seeking greater opportunities for a healthier and more creative North Carolina.

IsPOD Data Results Spring 2010
FitnessGram™ Response Rates Each K-8 school receiving SPARK training receives the FitnessGram™ software program. IsPOD pays the schools’ license fee for FitnessGram™. This section give the FitnessGram™ response rates for Spring 2010. FitnessGram™ response rates are given by grade for schools in the 61 North Carolina counties that received SPARK training and submitted FitnessGram™ results; and by grade for Duplin County schools that submitted FitnessGram™ results. FitnessGram™ response rates are based on the average daily membership of all 1st through 8th grade students in a district regardless (i.e., including schools that have not yet received the SPARK training).
North Carolina FG Response Rates In spring 2010, 370 K-8 NC schools conducted FitnessGram™ assessments and submitted their data. As noted in the SPARK Training section, 986 of the 1196 K-8 NC schools in the 61 counties that have adopted SPARK have received the SPARK training. Thus, 370 of the 986 schools (or 38%) that received the SPARK training and received the FitnessGram™ Software, submitted their FitnessGram™ Results. Table 1 shows the FitnessGram™ Response Rates by LEA for the 61 adopted counties. Table 2 shows the FitnessGram™ Response Rates by grade for all 1196 North Carolina Schools in the 61 adopted counties. Response Rates were determined by calculating the number of valid FitnessGram™ Student Ids divided by the Average Daily Membership (ADM) for that grade for all 1196 NC schools combined.
