Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.
Sarah Fowler, Ohio Wesleyan

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.
Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-two teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jack Lindell, Denison nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2015-16 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship last year as Denison claimed the men’s title for the third time in program history. In addition, the Wittenberg women’s volleyball team advanced to the national title match for the second time in school history, where the Tigers finished as the national runner-up following a 3-0 loss against Cal Lutheran. Conference members have accumulated 70 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2015-16 academic year, 228 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON AGAIN TABBED AS FAVORITES FOR 33RD NCAC MEN’S TENNIS SEASON Kenyon has once against been selected as the unanimous favorite for the North Coast Athletic Conference men’s tennis title based on preseason balloting by the conference coaches. Kenyon collected all nine first-place votes cast by league coaches to finish atop the poll with 81 total points, while DePauw and Oberlin rounded out the top three with 67 and 64 points, respectively. Denison finished fourth in the poll with 55 points, followed by Wabash (47), Ohio Wesleyan (33), Wooster (26), Allegheny (21) and Wittenberg (11). The Lords, who have won 10-straight NCAC titles and 19 all-time, enter the 2017 season with a solid mix of returning starters from last year’s squad that posted an overall record of 14-10 and reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament for the sixth time since 2008. Senior Tristan Kaye (Tampa, FL/Plant) highlights the list of returning starters after he teamed with recent graduate Sam Geier to win the 2016 NCAA Div. III Doubles Championship with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory over the Middlebury Panthers. Individually, junior Michael Liu (Newmarket, Ontario, Canada/Georges Vanier) is the Lords’ top returning singles player after earning first-team All-NCAC laurels a year ago with an even 9-9 mark in the second flight. Sophomore Nicholas Paolucci (Grosse Pointe, MI/South), a 2016 All-NCAC honorable mention selection, will also be expected to be a top singles performer for the Lords this year after finishing 2016 with an overall record of 18-6, while senior Mike Roberts (Charlotte, NC/Ardy Kell) also shined in singles competition last spring with a 16-3 mark playing anywhere between the third and sixth flights. Scott Thielke enters his 21st season as the head coach of the KC men’s tennis team with an overall record of 359-123, which includes a string of 15-straight NCAA Tournament appearances since 2002. Kenyon leads the NCAC with 19 championships in 32 years (1989, 1991-93, ‘95, 2002-05, 2007-16), including winning 14 of the last 15 crowns. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count with 12 championships (1985-89, ‘94, 1997-01, ‘06); Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, ‘96) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989.

KENYON TOPS 2017 NCAC WOMEN’S TENNIS PRESEASON POLL In one of the closest preseason polls in recent history, the North Coast Athletic Conference women’s tennis coaches have predicted that Kenyon will be the top squad in the league for the first time since 2001 based on preseason balloting by the conference coaches. The Ladies, who only received two first-place votes, narrowly edged out four-time NCAC champion DePauw for the top spot in the poll by a 58-55 margin, while defending league champion Denison landed in the third spot with 52 points. DePauw and Denison accounted for the six remaining first-place votes with three each. Oberlin was fourth overall in the poll with 43 points, followed by Ohio Wesleyan (27), Allegheny (25), Wooster (19) and Wittenberg (9). Kenyon, which leads the NCAC with 15 league titles, lost only one starter from last year’s squad that came just one point away from winning its first conference crown in 16 years. Senior Jenna Murray (Darien, CT/Darien) is the veteran leader on the team, while junior Diana Aboubakare (Orange, CA/Luther) returns as the reigning NCAC Player of the Year. Aboubakare, the NCAC Newcomer of the Year in 2015, finished the 2016 campaign with an overall singles record of 17-10, which included a 14-7 mark in dual matches. Murray split time last season between the second and third singles slots, compiling an overall mark of 17-16 and a 10-14 record in dual matches. Sophomore Maggie Sweeney (Grosse Pointe, MI/South), a second-team All-NCAC selection in 2016, also returns as a versatile singles player for the Ladies after posting a 19-11 mark between the top three positions last spring, while junior Alyssa Moreau (Granville, OH/Deerfield Acad., MA) was a second-team All-NCAC doubles performer last year after playing primarily in the top flight with 2016 graduate Samantha Murphy. Head coach Scott Thielke enters his 24th season at the helm of the KC women’s tennis program with an overall record of 328-161, which includes three NCAA runner-up finishes in 1988, 1989 and 1998. In 32 years of North Coast women’s tennis competition, four schools have claimed league championships: Allegheny took the first title in 1985, while Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison’s first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies’ streak in 2002, and reeled off 10-straight titles from 2002-11. DePauw earned four-straight titles from 2012-15, before DU reclaimed the top spot a year ago. Kenyon leads the way with 15 North Coast titles, followed by Denison (12), DePauw (4) and Allegheny (1).
