Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.
Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jake Fling, Wooster nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Wittenberg men’s golf team combined for 1,180 strokes at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills, Florida, to bring the Walnut and Bronze home to Springfield for the first time in history. NCAC member institutions have now collected 71 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2016-17 academic year, 182 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON TABBED AS THE FAVORITES FOR 2018 NCAC MEN’S TENNIS SEASON Kenyon has once again been selected as the favorites for the North Coast Athletic Conference men’s tennis championship based on preseason balloting by eight of the nine league coaches. Kenyon collected six of the possible eight first-place votes cast by league coaches to finish atop the poll with 70 total points, while Denison earned the final two first-place votes and finished second overall with 64 points. Oberlin checked in at third with 55 points, while DePauw was fourth with 45, followed by a tie between Ohio Wesleyan and Wabash in fifth with 38 points each. Rounding out the poll was Wooster in seventh with 24 points, Allegheny in eighth (15) and Wittenberg in ninth (11). The Lords, who have won 11-straight NCAC titles and 20 all-time, enter the 2018 season ranked 25th in the ITA Preseason Poll and boasts a veteran-laden roster with seven seniors, five juniors and four sophomores. Senior Michael Liu (Newmarket, Ontario, Canada/Georges Vanier) leads the list of returning seniors after compiling an overall record of 13-8 in the third singles slot a year ago, while classmates Weston Noall (Solon, OH/Gilmour Academy) and Alex Rieger (Madison, CT/ Daniel Hand) are the top returning doubles squad after combining for a 10-9 record in the first position last year. While that trio leads the senior class, junior Nicholas Paolucci (Grosse Pointe, MI/South) and sophomore Jacob Zalenski (Canton, OH/Jackson) are the top two returning singles players for the Lords this season. The duo combined for an overall singles record of 36-22 in 2017, which included Paolucci posting a 7-10 mark in the top spot and Zalenski producing an 11-6 record in the second position. In addition, Zalenski earned a spot on the All-NCAC first team and was voted the NCAC Newcomer of the Year, while Paolucci earned second-team laurels as a sophomore. The Lords will once again be led by Scott Thiekle in his 22nd as the head coach of the Kenyon men’s tennis team with an overall of 373-134, which includes leading the Lords to 16-straight NCAA Tournament appearances since 2002. Kenyon leads the NCAC with 20 championships in 33 years (1989, 1991-93, ‘95, 2002-05, 2007-17), including winning 15 of the last 16 conference titles. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count with 12 championships (1985-89, ‘94, 1997-01, ‘06); Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, ‘96) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989.

KENYON LADIES SELECTED AS THE UNANIMOUS FAVORITES FOR THE 2018 NCAC TITLE After winning its first North Coast Athletic Conference women’s tennis title since 2001 last spring, the Kenyon Ladies have been tabbed as the unanimous pick to win the 2018 league title based on preseason balloting by seven of the eight conference coaches. The Ladies, who claimed the conference crown a year ago with a thrilling 5-4 victory over DePauw in the championship match, topped the preseason poll with 56 total points after earning all seven available first-place votes cast by the league coaches. Denison, which won the NCAC title in 2016, finished second in the poll with 46 points, followed by DePauw (41), Oberlin (37), Ohio Wesleyan (30), Wooster (17), Allegheny (16) and Wittenberg (9). Kenyon, which enters the 2018 spring season ranked 30th in the ITA Div. III Poll, returns its top two singles players from a year ago in senior Diana Aboubakare (Orange, CA/Luther) and junior Maggie Sweeney (Grosse Pointe, MI/South), but the Ladies will also rely on an influx of talented freshman players throughout the spring season. Aboubakare, a 2017 All-American performer after going 1-1 in the NCAA Singles Championships, accumulated a 19-11 singles record last year playing primarily in the top position, while Sweeney had a breakout sophomore campaign in 2017 with a 24-7 record in the second singles slot. Seniors Alyssa Moreau (Granville, OH/Deerfield Acad., NH) and Grace Winslow (Sunrise, FL/South Plantation) are also expected to provide production in 2018, with Moreau ending last year with a 10-5 singles record and Winslow pairing with three different opponents for a 10-9 mark in doubles play. Leading the five-member freshman class for the Ladies this spring will be Ilana Blackwood (St. James, Barbados/Queens), Erika Oku (Hinsdale, IL/Central) and Ceylan Can (Weston, FL/Cypress Bay). Head coach Scott Thielke enters his 25th season at the helm of the KC women’s tennis program with an overall record of 341-171, which includes three NCAA runner-up finishes in 1988, 1989 and 1998. In 33 years of North Coast women’s tennis competition, four schools have claimed league championships: Allegheny took the first title in 1985, while Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison’s first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies’ streak in 2002, and reeled off 10-straight titles from 2002-11. DePauw earned four-straight titles from 2012-15, before Denison earned the top spot in 2016 and Kenyon reclaimed the title last spring. Kenyon leads the way with 16 North Coast titles, followed by Denison (12), DePauw (4) and Allegheny (1).
