Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American Andy Manson, DePauw amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in Sarah Vorder Bruegge, Allegheny the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 62 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

As the 2011 season approaches, three teams seem to be running neck-and-neck for preseason favorite honors for the North Coast Athletic Conference title – two-time defending champion Wittenberg, Wabash, which claimed NCAC titles from 2005-08, and Wooster, which last won the crown in 2004. Wittenberg took top honors from the preseason coaches’ poll with 74 points and four first-place votes. The Tigers return just nine starters, four on offense, but three of those offensive players were first-team All-NCAC honorees last fall. Senior quarterback Ben Zoeller threw for nearly 3,000 yards in 2010 and was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year. His top target - and the NCAC’s leading receiver - senior wide receiver Josh McKee, also returns. Also back is senior Corey Weber, a two-time, first-team all-conference tailback. Linebacker Zach Hurtt and safety Seth Parker, both of whom were first-team All-NCAC selections in 2010, Lead the Wittenberg defensive corps into the 2011 campaign. Wabash appears ready to reclaim the top spot with almost the entire starting offensive lineup back in the fold. The Little Giants were picked second in the coaches’ poll with 73 points and four first-place votes. Senior inside linebacker C.J. Gum leads the Little Giant defense after being named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year last fall. In addition to Gum, four players return who were voted to the All-NCAC squad in 2010: linemen Weston Kitley and Jacob Shaffer, wide receiver Jonathan Horn, and defensive back Sam Smith. Despite an injury-plagued season, the Little Giants were undefeated in North Coast play going into their final conference game of 2010 against Wittenberg, only to fall, 34-17, to the Tigers and finish runner-up for the second consecutive season. Wooster has won 14 conference contests in the past three seasons and takes aim at the top spot with a youthful yet experienced squad. The Fighting Scots are predicted to finish third in the coaches’ poll with 66 points and the remaining first-place vote. They have almost the entire starting lineup back in the fold. The offense, led by sophomore quarterback Richard Barnes, the NCAC’s reigning Newcomer of the Year, has all but one starter expected back. That includes the conference’s leading rusher from a season ago, senior running back, Robert Flagg, and senior allconference tight end Cameron Daniels. The Wooster defense is almost as experienced, with seven starters returning, including firstteam All-NCAC tackle Dan Terhune and safety Quinton Howard.

Allegheny, picked fourth (56 points), is contending with the graduation loss of a long-time starter at quarterback. The success of T.J. Salopek’s replacement will be key to the Gators’ fortunes in the coming year. The team does have almost the entire offensive line back intact, as well as running backs Brian Tamburlin and Tim Werley. Defensively, the secondary returns three of four starters. Punter Andrew DeJong and kicker Ryan Zipf, both all-conference performers, return for their senior campaigns, and keep the Allegheny special teams solid. Denison’s (fifth, 37 points) second year under head coach Jack Hatem features 17 starters and 55 letterman back for the new season. Junior quarterback Max Paulus heads up the offense, with the team’s top rusher, Sam Fioroni and top three receivers in Lucas Graham, Andy Carpenter and Braden Layer all returning. Junior Nat Kell leads nine starters returning on defense. Kell finished third in the NCAC with 8.0 sacks as a sophomore. Ohio Wesleyan (sixth, 34 points) is excited about the start of the 2011 campaign, in part because of the Battling Bishops’ strong finish to 2010. Sophomore quarterback Mason Espinosa threw for more than 1500 yards and 10 touchdowns in the last five games alone. He is back to lead eight experienced starters on offense. The defense also returns eight starters, led by junior end James Huddleston, who was second in the league in sacks as a sophomore. Oberlin (seventh, 32 points) again threatens to break into the elite of the conference after finishing last year in fifth place at 4-6. As recently as 2007, the Yeomen were third at 5-2. A young but, like Wooster, experienced team is ready for the challenges the 2011 season brings. Quarterback Josh Mandel along with five other juniors on the offensive side of the ball are back to claim their starting roles. On defense, six starters return, four of those juniors. A key to Oberlin’s success in the coming year will be filling open spots on the offensive line. Hiram’s (eighth, 19 points) second-year head coach Randy Moore has 33 players returning, including 14 starters, plus a large recruiting class to work with, giving the Terriers high hopes for improvement in the coming season. Hiram must replace recordsetting receiver Glenn Campbell, but does return senior wideout Shawn Zalewski, and sophomore running back Caleb Jones. The defense is anchored by linebackers Oliver Dickerhoof and Jon Hull, both of whom are all-conference performers. Kenyon (ninth, 14 points) has plenty of talent and experience returning as the Lords look to rebound from the 2010 season. Junior quarterback Dan Shannon returns, and is supported by a solid, veteran front line. Senior Alex Traugutt is the lone returnee on the defensive line. Senior all-conference linebacker Kolin Sullivan is another leader for the Kenyon defense. *************************************************************************** DePauw, which joins the North Coast Athletic Conference in every sport but football in 2011-12, will become a football-playing member of the NCAC in 2012. For the 2011 campaign, the Tigers will compete as an independent after winning the past two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles and bids into the NCAA Division III tournament. Second-year head coach Robby Long has 30 returning lettermen and seven starters back, and he must find a way to replace 30 seniors lost to graduation.

ALLEGHENY COLLEGE Head Coach Mark Matlak

Outlook

Alma Mater Allegheny ‘78

For just the fourth time in 10 seasons, head coach Mark Matlak will enter the year with a new signal-caller. The development of the quarterback position will be critical to the Gators’ short-term aspirations. In the first five weeks of the campaign, Allegheny will face three teams ranked in last season’s D3Football. com national poll in addition to a road date against non-conference rival Carnegie Mellon. Despite the uncertainty under center, the Gators return 14 starters from last year’s 7-3 team including both kicking specialists. Senior Andrew DeJong finished sixth in the NCAA in punting last season. Classmate Ryan Zipf ranks second in Allegheny lore with 27 career field goals. Helping to ease the burden on the Gators’ emerging arm will be a terrific offensive line and an experienced corps of running backs. The O-line returns four starters, led by 2010 first-team All-NCAC selection Sam Taylor. Brian Tamburlin, who earned all-conference laurels last season after finishing third in the league in rushing, is once again expected to start at tail back. The defense took a significant hit from graduation along the front, although the secondary returns three starters. Doug Williams returns to anchor the interior of the linebacker contingent, while 2010 allconference pick John Douglas developed into a disruptive force on the outside.

HIRAM COLLEGE

Head Coach Randy Moore

Outlook

Alma Mater Iowa ‘84

It’ll be a new look for the Hiram College football team in 2011 as the team ushers in a new field, lights, new locker rooms and, its largest recruiting class. The Terriers will dress one of its largest teams in program history. They welcome back 33 letterwinners this fall, including 14 starters, as secondyear coach Randy Moore looks to lead Hiram in a season of improvement from a year ago. On offense, Hiram looks to replace standout wide receiver Glenn Campbell who had a record-setting season as a senior in which he set five school records. Hiram returns six starters, including four on the offensive line. The duo of sophomore running back Caleb Jones and sophomore wideout Richard Simpson look to lead the Terriers this season. Jones led the team in rushing as a freshman with 324 yards and a touchdown. Simpson caught 24 passes for 201 yards and was the team’s leading punt and kick returner. Oliver Dickerhoof and Jon Hull, both linebackers, anchor the Terrier defense. Last, fall, Dickerhoof led the team in tackles with 112 and Hull was second with 69, despite missing two games due to injury. Dickerhoof was also first in fumble recoveries (3), fumbles forced (2) and was second in tackles for loss (7).

Record at HC 1-9 (1 year) Overall Record 14-43 (6 years) • Took over the Terrier program in December 2009, after serving as defensive coordinator at Otterbein for seven seasons. • Served as head coach at Lake Forest from 1995-99. • Has been part of rebuilding five collegiate football programs.

Outlook

Head Coach Ted Stanley

Alma Mater Grinnell '93

A young team endured some growing pains in 2010, but the Lords enter ‘11 ready to reap the benefits of a game-tested roster. Known most for its explosive offenses in seasons past, Kenyon has developed into a more balanced squad and has seen great improvements within the defensive ranks. In 2010, linebacker Kolin Sullivan, now a sophomore, earned All-NCAC honorable mention recognition. Senior Michael Papagni rejoins Sullivan to solidify the middle of the defense. Up front, Alex Traugutt returns 31 tackles to a unit that needs his senior savvy. The secondary could wind up a Lord strength with juniors Luke Bissinger, Will Clements, and Carlo Gagliardo back after all three recorded two interceptions and at least 40 tackles. Offensively, there are numerous reasons to expect an exciting product. Senior Jeremy Oller leads a line that allowed an NCAC-low 14 sacks last year. They bought plenty of time for junior quarterback Dan Shannon, who set a College record with a 59.9 completion percentage as a sophomore. Shannon’s top target, junior Brett Williams, returns to the backfield. Williams hauled in a team-leading 66 passes for 529 yards. He also rushed for 373 yards and four touchdowns, while complementing the power rush of junior Jordan Brooks.

Oberlin enters 2011 looking to build upon last fall’s highly competitive campaign in which it finished 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Yeomen return the majority of their skill players on offense, which includes quarterback Josh Mandel and the tight end Danny Enright. Enright led all North Coast tight ends with five touchdowns and 490 yards receiving. Oberlin also welcomes back Robin Witjes and Adam Niec at wideout. The pair combined for 11 touchdowns a year ago. Offensive line is the question mark for the Yeomen as they will have three open spots to fill before the start of the season. Juniors Tyler Benson anad Rob Conte are the returning starters on the front line. Defensively the Yeomen return starting ends Jake Hochendoner and Clay Eaton as well defensive back David Kalgren. Kalgren led the conference with four interceptions in 2010. There are five starting spots open on the defensive side of the ball.

Head Coach Mike Hollway

Outlook

Alma Mater Michigan '74

Ohio Wesleyan University and veteran head coach Mike Hollway will look to continue the momentum generated late in the 2010 season, when the Battling Bishops became one of the North Coast Athletic Conference’s most entertaining teams. Sophomore quarterback Mason Espinosa, who fueled the Bishop turnaround by throwing for more than 1500 yards and 10 TDs during the final five games of the season, returns to lead the offense. Senior tight end Pat Embleton, who caught 38 passes; sophomore split end Dave Mogilnicki, who hauled in six scoring strikes; and sophomore halfback Acoryé White, the team’s leading rusher in 2010; all return. Paving the way for the Bishop offense is a veteran line that includes senior Dave Stewart and sophomores Chris Badenhop and Bryan Bowling. On defense, the Bishops return eight starters and two others with starting experience. Junior end James Huddleston, who ranked second in the league in sacks in 2010, anchors the line. Sophomore middle linebacker Justin Segal racked up nine tackles for loss last season. Senior safety Keegan Varner and sophomore cornerback Leonard Gleaves, each with three interceptions in 2010, return in the backfield.

Outlook

Head Coach Erik Raeburn

Alma Mater Mount Union ‘94

The Little Giants hope to put an injuryplagued season behind them in pursuit of a return to the top of the NCAC standings and another trip to the NCAA tournament. All-American Wes Chamblee was lost for the season in the first game of 2010, but recovered for a successful spring season as a member of the track team. He joins veteran receivers Jonathan Horn, Brady Young, Geoff Wright, and James Kraus. Chase Belton and Tyler Burke combined for 2,451 passing yards and 22 TDs last season in the Little Giants’ quarterback rotation, and ran for 541 yards and seven scores. They will share those duties again this season behind four returning starters on the offensive line, anchored by All-American Weston Kitley. Fellow All-American CJ Gum, the 2010 NCAC Defensive Player of the Year, is back for his final season. Gum led Wabash with 75 tackles, including 8-1/2 tackles for losses and two sacks. While the Little Giants return only five starters, a total of 11 letterwinners are back on the defensive side of the football, including All-American special teams star Jonathon Koop. Koop set a school record for punt return touchdowns with four, while the Little Giants tied the NCAA Division III record with 11 blocked kicks in 2010.

Record at WC 27-6-0 (4th year) Overall Record 81-32-0 (12th year) • Head coach at Coe from 2000-07. • Won three IIAC titles and two NCAA III tournament bids. • Served as an assistant at Mount Union from 1994-99. • 2002 IIAC and Regional Coach of the Year.

WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY Head Coach Joe Fincham

Outlook

Alma Mater Ohio '88

After back-to-back runs to the NCAA Division III Tournament, the Wittenberg Tigers must replace seven starters on each side of the ball in 2011. The expectations remain high, however, as 36 letterwinners return in search of a third-straight NCAC championship. Head Coach Joe Fincham must rebuild his entire offensive line, but plenty of talent and experience returns at the skill positions, starting with the 2010 NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, senior quarterback Ben Zoeller, who set numerous school records while throwing for nearly 3,000 yards in his first year as a starter. Three of his top four receiving targets are back, led by senior wide receiver Josh McKee. McKee broke more than a halfdozen Wittenberg and NCAC records in 2010 and led the nation in receiving yards per game during the regular season. In addition, the senior tailback tandem of Corey Weber and Conner Warye, which has accumulated more than 3,500 yards rushing over the last two seasons, returns intact. On defense, the top returner is senior linebacker Zach Hurtt, a first-team allconference honoree in 2010 who has more than 200 tackles in his career. Also returning to the line-up is senior safety Seth Parker, also a first-team All-NCAC selection in 2010. He heads a solid defensive backfield that includes junior cornerbacks Jamaal Everett and Karlos Marshall.

Record at WU 136-31-0 (16th year) Overall Record 136-31-0 (16th year) • Fifth head coach at Wittenberg since 1955. • Spent six seasons as Tigers' offensive line coach from 1990-95. • Is Wittenberg’s all-time winningest head coach. • Six-time NCAC Coach of the Year and two-time AFCA region coach of the year.

Wooster was one defensive stop from capping the 2010 season with a piece of the NCAC championship. With 17 starters returning, it has reason to believe that 2011 could be special. The Fighting Scots, who held a 17-16 lead over Wittenberg in last year’s finale before turning the ball over with 3:01 left, appear to be in good shape on offense. They welcome back three all-NCAC picks at skill positions in quarterback Richard Barnes, running back Robert Flagg, and tight end Cameron Daniels, plus four offensive lineman. Barnes, the 2010 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, threw for 2,046 yards and ran for another 309, while Flagg led the league in rushing (830 yards). Daniels, a four-year starter, is coming off career-highs of 34 receptions and 314 yards. Defensively, Wooster has some rebuilding to do with the loss of four starters. Softening those losses is the return of tackle Dan Terhune, who had an NCAC-best 11.0 sacks en route to first-team all-NCAC honors. The secondary has three starters back with all-NCAC credentials. Safety Quinton Howard and corner Girard OgletreeCrawford garnered first- and second-team accolades last season, respectively, while corner Taylor Trout was a second-team pick in 2009.

DEPAUW UNIVERSITY Outlook

Head Coach Robby Long

Coming off a second-straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title and appearance in the NCAA Division III postseason, DePauw begins a new chapter in its storied football history as an independent as the Tigers compete in their 124th season before battling for the NCAC title in 2012. DePauw lost 30 seniors to graduation from a 9-2 team which matched the school record with nine straight wins to open the season. Two starters return to the offense in left guard Lewis Brown and senior center Mitch Turnbow. Running back Jon Ellis has totaled 1,488 yards with 17 touchdowns in three years and Ethan Schweir is expected to get the nod at quarterback where he saw limited game action as a junior. Four starters return to the defense including defensive end Michael Fultz, middle linebacker Matt Johnson, free safety Myron Burr and cornerback Steve Valdiserri. Johnson is the leading returning tackler (55), while Burr totaled 35. Fultz tied for second on last year’s squad with 10 tackles for loss and was second with 4.5 sacks. Valdiserri enters the season with seven career interceptions. Sophomore Eric Malm returns as the Tigers’ placekicker after booting 40-of-42 extra points and hitting 6-of-13 field goals. His 58 points were second on the team.

The Tigers’ junior quarterback Ben Zoeller earned the Mike Gregory Award as the league’s most valuable player on offense. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards in his first year as a starter. Head coach Joe Fincham garnered NCAC Coach of the Year recognition for the second straight year and seventh time overall. Wabash (5-1) was runner-up for the second consecutive season, losing only to the champion Tigers in the Little Giants’ final conference game of 2010, 34-17. Junior C.J. Gum of Wabash was awarded the Defensive Player of the Year to win the Hank Critchfield Award. He posted 85 tackles, with 8.5 for a loss and a pair of sacks. Wooster and Allegheny tied for third. Oberlin was fifth at 3-3, followed by Denison and Ohio Wesleyan in a tie for sixth (2-4). Hiram went 1-5 to place eighth while Kenyon was ninth (0-6).
