Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to Molly Martorella, Oberlin

support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Craig Osterbrock, Wittenberg Sixty-three teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all ten members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Denison claimed the men’s title for the second consecutive season. In addition, Wittenberg claimed the leagues’ first-ever volleyball title and Ohio Wesleyan garnered the second men’s soccer title in league and school history. Conference members have accumulated 65 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 157 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

As the 2012 season approaches, the league coaches once again believe that Wabash and Wittenberg will retain their control on the gridiron in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Little Giants sit at the top of the preseason coaches’ poll after earning nine of the possible 10 first-place votes for 98 total points, while the Tigers accumulated the final first-place vote and finished second in the balloting with 90 points. DePauw, which will play a full NCAC schedule this season after competing as an independent in 2011, finished third in the poll with 72 points, followed by Wooster (63), Allegheny (62), Denison (55), Ohio Wesleyan (42), Oberlin (38), Hiram (16) and Kenyon (14). Wabash, which claimed its sixth NCAC title in 2011 with a perfect 6-0 record, returns to action this fall as the odds-on favorite to repeat as champs based on balloting from league coaches. The 2012 Little Giant squad will feature seven new starters on offense; however, a total of six all-conference players return to the defensive unit that ranked among the nation’s best a season ago. Leading the charge on the defensive front will be senior defensive lineman Pat Clegg, senior defensive back Austin Hodges and 2011 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, sophomore linebacker AJ Akinribade. Offensively, senior Chase Belton returns as the signal caller, while All-American tackle Weston Kitley will anchor the offensive line. Additionally, senior running back Vann Hunt and junior tight end Jeff Bell also return to the Little Giant’s starting lineup. Wittenberg is hungry to get back to the top of the conference standings after seeing its two-year run as conference champions snapped last fall by Wabash. The Tigers return nearly their entire defensive unit from a year ago, led by senior defensive end Jon Daniels, senior cornerback Jamaal Everett and junior safety Mark Swope. Junior Reed Florence will officially take the reigns under center this fall after appearing in nine games a season ago as the backup to two-time NCAC Offensive Player of the Year, Ben Zoeller. Although the Tigers lost a majority of their offensive production from last season, there is optimism in Springfield that juniors Brendon Cunningham and Desi Kirkman can step into key backfield roles. Wittenberg also returns senior kicker Sean Williams, who set multiple school records and earned first-team all-conference honors a year ago. DePauw looks to make a splash in its first official season as a football-playing member of the NCAC. The Tigers, who return 37 total letterman, will arrive to camp with a chip on their shoulders after posting the program’s first sub-.500 season since 1995 a year ago with an overall record of 4-5. The Tigers return six starters to the defensive unit that ranked 30th in Div. III a season ago in yards allowed (287.9), while the offense will be bolstered by three returning lineman. The Tigers expect sophomore signal caller Drew Seaman to run the offense this season after starting three games a year ago before suffering a season-ending injury. DPU will kick off its 125th season of competition on September 8th at home against St. Olaf and will travel to Wittenberg for its first NCAC contest on September 15th. Wooster enters the 2012 campaign with high expectations as the Fighting Scots return 14 starters from a year ago and continue to bolster the program with its largest incoming freshman class since 2007 (45). The Scots will have a dual threat quarterback attack this fall as juniors Richard Barnes and Brett Frongillo will compete for the starting job throughout camp. The winner of the QB battle will have plenty of familiar faces to throw to as the receiving corps returns in full force with seniors Jordan McIntyre and Zack Weidrick along with sophomore Justin Rice. Defensively, the strongest unit appears to be at linebacker as the Scots welcome back two all-NCAC performers in senior Matt Breidigam and junior Brendon Taylor as well as juniors Quinn Hood and Seth Goodwin who split time at middle linebacker a season ago.

Allegheny, which finished just one point behind Wooster in the preseason coaches’ poll, will take on a new look this season as the Gators will have drastic personnel changes on both sides of the ball. Although numerous changes will take place, the offensive line returns nearly in full force with four of its five starters from a year ago: junior Zack Filous, sophomore Zack Palmer, junior Ty Pryor and senior Conor Sharp. Senior Taylor O’Brien, who shared time at tailback in 2011, will transition to fullback this fall as junior Ben Perko is expected to take over the reigns at tailback. The defensive unit will be led by six returning starters, including five seniors: linebacker Bill Devlin, defensive end John Douglas, cornerback Colin Hartford, free safety Ryan Schroth and strong safety Ryan Vietmeier. Denison aims to build on last fall’s success as the Big Red return 13 total starters from a team that finished 4-2 in NCAC play and 5-5 overall. Sam Fioroni, who led the NCAC in rushing with 1,093 yards, and senior quarterback Max Paulus, will be the cornerstones of DU’s offensive success this season. In addition, the offensive line will have a veteran presence this season with the return of junior Matt Cochran, junior Danny Webb, sophomore Thomas Demers and senior Corey Daff. The line will also be the strength on the defensive side of the ball as the Big Red return seniors Nat Kell, Adam Murray, Lane Hartfield and Charlie Baker. The foursome helped the DU defense rank second in the NCAC a year ago against the run as they held opponents to just 107.6 yards a game on the ground. Ohio Wesleyan will usher in a new era of football in Delaware with Tom Watts taking over the reigns of the program this fall. Watts will rely heavily on senior defensive end James Huddleston after he led the nation in tackles for loss last season, averaging 2.35 per game. Offensively, junior Mason Espinosa will once again return as the signal caller for the Battling Bishops after setting school records for passing yards (2,388) and total offense (2,384) in 2011. OWU returns numerous key targets for Espinosa, including sophomore Kevin Herman who led the squad in both rushing and receiving a year ago, while junior split end Dave Moglinicki and sophomore halfback Scott Jenkins will also provide a veteran presence. Leading the way up front for the Bishops’ offense will be junior tackle Bryan Bowling, junior center Jake Eckard and sophomore guard Chris Badenhop. Oberlin returns to the gridiron this season with high expectations as the Yeomen return an unprecedented 19 starters from a season ago. Senior quarterback Josh Mandel will look to put a bow on his career after helping the 2011 offensive unit set school records in passing yards (2,485) and passing touchdowns (25). The senior trio of Robin Witjes, Adam Niec and Dan Weintraub will be Mandel’s key targets in the aerial attack, while junior Moses Richardson, sophomore Justin Williams and freshman Blake Buckhannon will handle the load on the ground. Oberlin’s defensive unit appears just as strong with eight seniors returning to the starting lineup, highlighted by senior defensive end Clay Eaton who led the NCAC with 11 sacks in 2011 and junior strong safety Zach Kisley who shared the league lead in interceptions last season with three. Hiram enters the 2012 season looking to continue to improve as the Terriers return 22 letterman and seven starters from a year ago to go along with yet another strong incoming freshman class. Senior quarterback Brendan Rehor returns to the squad this fall after missing all of last season due to injury. In 2010, Rehor set the single season school record for pass completions (222) and attempts (346), while also finishing sixth in the NCAC with 1,910 passing yards. The Terriers will have a new look defense in 2012 as they lost 15 letterman and seven starters from a year ago. Among the returners expected to contribute this season include senior defensive back Dominick Harper, junior defensive back Josh Peacock and freshman Mario Lemuel. Kenyon’s 2012 season will bring about a fresh start in Gambier as Chris Monfiletto was hired as the program’s new head coach in January. The Lords have a youthful yet experienced roster that will feature 18 returning starters, including four all-NCAC performers. Senior running back Brett Williams returns as the Lords’ biggest threat on the offensive side of the ball after averaging 72.3 rushing yards per game and 22.0 receiving yards per game last fall. In addition, senior quarterback Dan Shannon will line up under center for the Lords for the third season in a row. Kenyon’s defensive unit will be centered around the junior linebacker duo of Kolin Sullivan and Keith Jones, who combined for ten sacks last year.

ALLEGHENY COLLEGE Head Coach Mark Matlak

Outlook

Alma Mater Allegheny ‘78

Although Mark Matlak returns for his 11th season as head coach, Allegheny will showcase an entirely new look predicated by sweeping personnel changes on both sides of the ball. The team does return 12 players who earned starting roles for at least part of last season, and there is burgeoning talent among that group. However, the season will likely be defined by players with unproven experience at the collegiate level. Still, the coaching staff is enthusiastic about the emergence of the team’s rising sophomores as well as an incredibly solid rookie class that could put Allegheny’s storied grid iron program back on track in the highly competitive NCAC. The offensive line returns four starters, including both guard positions from last year. Taylor O’Brien, who started part of the year at tailback, will move to fullback while Ben Perko is poised to establish a leading role in the backfield after averaging 4.3 yards per carry in 2011. The rest of the skill positions on offense will feature all new personnel, including a new signal caller. Behind all-region cornerback Colin Hartford, the defense is steady in the secondary. Both of last season’s regular starters at safety (Ryan Vietmeier and Ryan Schroth) return as do linebackers Brad Burkley and Bill Devlin. All-conference standout John Douglas returns to anchor one of the ends, while promising second-year player Ryan Sherry slides from the rush end to defensive tackle in a move that favors Ryan’s skill set and gives the Gators a strong presence in the middle.

Third-year head coach Jack Hatem returns seven starters on offense and six starters on defense in 2012. Last season the Big Red posted a third-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference, after going 4-2 in league play and 5-5 overall. Senior Sam Fioroni led the NCAC in rushing last season with 1,093 yards and earned first-team all-conference honors. Also returning to an offense that piled up 3,943 yards a season ago is senior quarterback Max Paulus. In his second season as the starter, Paulus completed 61 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,336 yards and 22 touchdowns. That marked the third-most passing yards by a Denison quarterback in school history. Paulus’s favorite target Braden Layer also returns after being granted a medical hardship year from the NCAA. Layer caught a career-high 35 passes for 524 yards and three touchdowns in 2011. As a team, Denison finished second in the conference in total offense, first in time of possession and first in red zone scoring. On defense, Denison’s defensive line will be its strength as they return seniors Nat Kell, Adam Murray, Lane Hartfield and Charlie Baker. That group was outstanding against the run last season, holding opponents to 107.6 yards per game. That total was good enough to rank second in the conference. In the secondary, safeties Cale Garverick and Alex Sycher also return for their final seasons with the Big Red. The 2012 season will begin on Sept. 8 when Denison hosts Ohio Wesleyan at 7 p.m.

DEPAUW UNIVERSITY Outlook

Head Coach Robby Long

DePauw returns 37 lettermen and looks to rebound from the program’s first sub-.500 season since 1995 after finishing with a 4-5 mark last year. Six starters return to a defensive unit which allowed just less than 288 total yards per game and ranked 30th in Division III. Junior nose tackle Patrick Keller and senior end Zach Price return to the line, while senior Jack Quinn and junior Mitch Dwenger are back at linebacker spots. Senior strong safety Robby Schuler and junior cornerback Myron Burr round out the returning starters in the defensive backfield. Offensively, the Tigers return just four starters but three on the offensive line including tackles Christopher Lamping and Jimmy Vann and guard Craig Neece. Also back is tight end Bobby Coburn. DePauw sustained several injuries at quarterback in 2011, but Drew Seaman looks to be the top candidate under center. The sophomore played in three games last year and started a pair of games before sustaining a season-ending injury and completed nearly 60 percent of his passes with a 136.2 efficiency rating. Junior Eric Malm is back after two years as a starting placekicker and one as the team’s punter. Also back is senior Taylor Wagner, a second team D3football.com Preseason All-America selection as a returner. Wagner ranked third in Division III kickoff return average last year and was 24th in punt returns and returned one of each for touchdowns. DePauw’s 125th season, which begins on September 8 with a non-conference home game against St. Olaf, marks the Tigers’ first in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

HIRAM COLLEGE

Head Coach Randy Moore

Outlook

Alma Mater Iowa ‘84

The Hiram football team continues to see improvements and will look to continue that trend in 2012. Offensively, the Terriers return 22 lettermen and seven starters. Statistically junior wide receiver Richard Simpson is the team’s leading returning player after leading Hiram in receptions (39), yards (359) and touchdowns (three) last season as a sophomore. Also back this fall is senior quarterback Brendan Rehor who missed all of last year due to injury in the offseason. Prior to his injury, Rehor set two single-season records for pass completions (222) and attempts (364). He finished sixth in the NCAC in passing yardage (1,910) to go along with 10 touchdowns. He accounted for 2,085 yards of the team’s 2,932 yards of total offense in 2010. Hiram will have the most holes to fill defensively as the Terriers lost 15 lettermen and seven starters, including All-NCAC linebackers Oliver Dickerhoof and Jon Hull. Dickerhoof and Hull finished first and second on the team in tackles with 111 and 101 stops respectively. Of the returning veterans, look for defensive backs Josh Peacock, Dominick Harper and lineman Mario Lemuel to be the leaders. Peacock posted 84 tackles last season, while Harper added 76 tackles. Lemuel led the team and was fourth in the NCAC in sacks with seven.

Record at HC 2-18 (3rd year) Overall Record 15-52 (7th year) • Took over the Terrier program in December 2009, after serving as defensive coordinator at Otterbein for seven seasons. • Served as head coach at Lake Forest from 1995-99. • Has been part of rebuilding five collegiate football programs.

Head Coach Chris Monfiletto

Alma Mater Davidson '04

The 2012 season brings about a fresh start for the Kenyon Lords. First-year head coach Chris Monfiletto was hired in January to turn the program around following back-to-back winless seasons in Gambier. Monfiletto hopes to accelerate the process with a roster that boasts a good mix of youth and experience. The Lords return 18 starters and four All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections, led by senior running back Brett Williams. Williams ranked second in the NCAC with 72.3 rushing yards per game in 2011. A true dual threat out of the backfield, Williams has an excellent chance to become the first Kenyon player to finish with more than 1,000 career yards as both a runner and receiver. Senior quarterback Dan Shannon, owner of a 57.8 career completion percentage, further bolsters the offense as a third-year starter under center. On defense, Kenyon can build around the disruptive play of linebacker Kolin Sullivan and defensive end Keith Jones, who each produced breakout sophomore seasons. The two combined for 24.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and ten sacks last year. Sullivan recorded a total of 84 stops, which was the second-best tally on the team. The Lords begin their season September 1st with a non-conference contest at Bluffton.

Hopes are high for Oberlin in 2012 as the Yeomen return 19 starters and 32 total letterwinners from a season ago. Fifth-year quarterback Josh Mandel is back under center to lead a potent Yeomen attack that set school records in passing yards (2,485) and passing touchdowns (25) a season ago. Mandel will be throwing to two elite receivers in seniors Robin Witjes and Adam Niec. The pair combined for 11 TD’s and 1,025 yards in 2011. The Yeomen will rely on a trio of backs to shoulder the ground game in junior Moses Richardson, sophomore Justin Williams and freshman Blake Buckhannon. Defensively Oberlin is spearheaded by first-team defensive end Clay Eaton, who led the NCAC with 11 sacks a season ago. The Yeomen defense forced 18 takeaways last fall, led by returning strong safety Zach Kisley who tied for an NCAC best with three interceptions. The senior duo of Matt Misorski and Dane Stritt combined for 103 tackles last year and are back to guide the linebacking core. The Yeomen will look to continue their disciplined ways, as they were the least penalized team in the NCAC last year. Late-season edition Erickson Andrews is also back to handle the kicking duties fulltime.

With eight starters returning on either side of the line of scrimmage, Ohio Wesleyan looks to open the Tom Watts era by improving on last season’s 4-6 record. Anchoring the Battling Bishop defense is senior end James Huddleston, who led all NCAA Division III players in tackles for loss last season (2.35/game). Senior nose guard Tyler Swary and junior end Jonathan Valentine also return on the line. Senior Tyler Sheetz, a second-team AllNorth Coast Athletic Conference selection last year, is back at outside linebacker. Junior Justin Segal and sophomore DaVaughn DuBose also are returning starters. Juniors Leonard Gleaves and Rayce Risser return at the cornerback spots. Junior quarterback Mason Espinosa, who set school records for passing yards and total offense in 2011, highlights the Bishop offense. Seven new starters on offense will join a veteran defense that helped Wabash to its sixth NCAC football championship in 2011. Two-time NCAC Defensive Player of the Year CJ Gum is gone from the Little Giants’ lineup, but several first-team All-NCAC players are back to pace a defense that ranked among the nation’s leaders in rushing defense (fifth; 78.08 ypg), scoring defense (11th , 12.92 ppg), and total defense (12th; 249.46 ypg): senior defensive lineman Pat Clegg, senior defensive back Austin Hodges, and 2011 Newcomer of the Year, sophomore linebacker AJ Akinribade. Honorable-mention All-NCAC selections Cody Buresh, a sophomore linebacker; Jorge DiazAguilar, a junior defensive lineman; and Houston Hodges, a sophomore defensive back give Wabash a total of six returning all-conference players on defense. Junior receivers James Kraus and Sean Hildebrand and sophomore Nathan Mueller will be expected to step into starting positions, as will offensive linemen Mark Riffle, Scott Campbell, Chase Tichenor, and Michael Del Busto. WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY Head Coach Joe Fincham

Outlook

A two-year run of conference titles and NCAA Division III Tournament berths was snapped in 2011, and now the Tigers must replace seven offensive starters, including two-time NCAC Offensive Player of the Year Ben Zoeller and record-setting wide receiver Josh McKee. The lofty annual goals for the Tigers remain the same, however. The defense returns almost intact, giving Head Coach Joe Fincham an excellent foundation for 2012. Nine starters and 22 letterwinners return, led by senior defensive end Jon Daniels and senior cornerback Jamaal Everett, both second-team All-NCAC choices in 2011, and junior safety Mark Swope, an honorable mention choice a year ago. Offensively, junior quarterback Reed Florence will be the key after appearing in nine games in 2011. He ranked third on the team in rushing yards and also threw for 141 yards while racking up 14 touchdowns (seven rushing, seven passing). The Tigers’ top two running backs and top two receivers all graduated, but junior Brendon Cunningham, who hauled in five touchdown passes a year ago, is expected to step into the spotlight in 2012. Junior Desi Kirkman also figures to get more touches after earning all-conference recognition as a kick returner a year ago. Finally, senior kicker Sean Williams, who broke multiple school records and earned firstteam All-NCAC honors in 2011, returns to the line-up.

Alma Mater Ohio '88 Record at WU 144-33 (17th year) Overall Record 144-33 (17th year) • Fifth head coach at Wittenberg since 1955. • Spent six seasons as Tigers' offensive line coach from 1990-95. • Is Wittenberg’s all-time winningest head coach. • Six-time NCAC Coach of the Year and two-time AFCA region coach of the year.

Set to take the field with 14 returning starters at the 24 positions (including placekicker and punter) and another 21 letterwinners, plus the largest freshmen class (45) since 2007, Wooster believes it has a core group in place to return to the upper tier of the NCAC, and will thus compete for championships again. Headlining the storylines will be quarterback, where the Fighting Scots have an unusual situation with two returning starters. Richard Barnes started the first 13 games of his career before suffering a season-ending injury in week three a year ago, which allowed Brett Frongillo to take over, and the latter performed very well. The two are both dual threats, with Barnes having compiled 2,932 career yards of total offense (419 rushing, 2,513 passing) and Frongillo 1,923 (685, 1,238). Barnes and/or Frongilo will have familiar receivers to throw to, with Jordan McIntyre (35 receptions for 409 yards last season) in the slot and senior Zack Weidrick (32 for 344) and Justin Rice (27 for 252) on the outside as three returning starters. Wooster’s strongest unit may be the linebackers, as two all-NCAC standouts are back in Brendon Taylor (109 tackles last season) and senior Matt Breidigam (73), plus the talented Quinn Hood, who split starts with Seth Goodwin a year ago. Two-time all-NCAC cornerback Girard Ogletree-Crawford returns, as do defensive lineman Rob Holtz and Matt Reeder.

2011 REVIEW

Wabash claimed its sixth North Coast title with a perfect 6-0 conference record. The Little Giants then went on to win a pair of NCAA Tournament games against Illinois College, 38-20, and North Central, 29-28, before falling to eventual national runner-up Mount Union, 20-8, in the quarterfinals. The winner of the Mike Gregory Award as the NCAC’s Offensive Player of the Year went to Wittenberg senior quarterback Ben Zoeller for the second consecutive season. Zoeller led the league in passing (2651 yards) and total offense (2677 yards) as the Tigers finished second in the final standings with a league mark of 5-1. Wabash senior linebacker C.J. Gum also repeated as the winner of the Hank Critchfield Award as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Gum led the NCAC with 63 solo tackles and added 42 assists to finish the season with 105 total tackles. He also added 4.0 sacks and 10.3 tackles for losses. For the first time since the 2003 season, Wabash also claimed the Newcomer of the Year Award. Freshman linebacker A.J. Akinribade was so honored after finishing the season with 65 tackles (38 solo, 27 assist), including 6.5 sacks and 15 tackles for losses.
