Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The Molly Martorella, Oberlin NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate
athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-three teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all ten members competed in the Craig Osterbrock, Wittenberg NCAA post-season during the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Denison claimed the men’s title for the second consecutive season. In addition, Wittenberg claimed the leagues’ first-ever volleyball title and Ohio Wesleyan garnered the second men’s soccer title in league and school history. Conference members have accumulated 65 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 157 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

OHIO WESLEYAN VOTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 29TH NORTH COAST WOMEN’S SOCCER SEASON CLEVELAND -- Ohio Wesleyan emerged as the favorite in the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference women’s soccer preseason poll based on balloting from the league coaches. The Battling Bishops, who are the defending NCAC tournament champions, earned six of a possible nine first-place votes from league coaches to compile 76 total points. Allegheny, which finished as NCAC co-champions with OWU a year ago, earned one first-place vote and finished second in the poll with 68 points, while Denison garnered the final two first-place votes and finished third with 61 points. DePauw racked up 50 total points to finish fourth on the poll, followed by Wooster (47), Kenyon (43), Wittenberg (31), Hiram (17) and Oberlin (12). Ohio Wesleyan, which is 208-66-26 (.737) during the 15-year tenure of head coach Bob Barnes, will be vying for its 10th NCAC women’s soccer title all-time this fall. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bishops will once again rely on junior goalie Hannah Zacharias (Marysville, OH/Marysville) who allowed just 17 goals in 1952:21 minute of action in 2011 for a goals-against-average of 0.78, while senior Jessie Huschart (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) returns this fall as the leading point scorer from a year ago after totaling 16 points with four goals and eight assists. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
