Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Mason Espinosa,

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fourty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports competed in the NCAA postAli Ross, DePauw season during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 32nd time in program history. In addition, the DePauw women’s basketball team raised the Walnut & Broze trophy for the second time in program history, making them just the second women’s basketball team in conference history to win a women’s basketball national title. Conference members have accumulated 66 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 221 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

WITTENBERG TOPS PRESEASON POLL FOR 30TH NCAC VOLLEYBALL SEASON Wittenberg University emerged as the preseason favorite in balloting by North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball coaches in the 2013 preseason poll. The Tigers, who claimed a share of their 18th NCAC volleyball title last fall with a perfect 8-0 record against NCAC foes, earned eight of the possible nine first-place votes cast from the league coaches to total 80 points. DePauw, which finished in second-place a year ago with a 7-1 record, finished second in the poll with 69 points, while Hiram captured the final firstplace vote and finished third with 66 points. Denison (53) and Wooster (45) rounded out the top-five in fourth- and fifth-place, respectively, followed by Ohio Wesleyan (28), Kenyon (25), Oberlin (23) and Allegheny (16). Wittenberg will again be under the leadership of head coach Paco Labrador. In 10 seasons at the helm of the Tiger volleyball program, Labrador has compiled an overall record of 323-46, including an impressive mark of 122-2 in NCAC matches. After winning the program’s first NCAA Division III national title in 2011, the Tigers finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 27-5 and finished as the runners-up in the Calvin Regional, falling to the host, 3-2, in the regional championship match. Wittenberg returns six letter winners and four starters from a year ago, including NCAC Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year award winner, sophomore Kara Seidenstricker (London, OH/Jonathan Alder) and senior middle hitter Andrea Behling (Columbus, IN/North). Seidenstricker, who was the AVCA National Freshman of the Year recipient and a member of the AVCA All-America team, racked up 367 kills, 66 blocks and 36 service aces in 2012, while Behling, the 2012 NCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, was a threat on both the offensive and defensive side as she posted 305 kills, 78 blocks, 75 digs and 23 service aces.

NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ALL-DECADE TEAM Wittenberg’s Jackie Williams and Sarah Yuskewich headline a list of stellar student-athletes named to the North Coast Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary All-Decade volleyball team. Williams and Yuskewich are the only two players to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards in the last decade; Yuskewich (2003 & 04) and Williams (2007 &08). Yuskewich is still recognized as one of the top setters in NCAC history as she holds the league’s career record in total assists with 6,151 and assists per game at 12.78. In addition to her career records, Yuskewich also owns the conference record for assists in a three-game match after dishing out 58 in a 3-0 victory (3025, 33-31, 30-22) over Ohio Northern on September 24, 2004. After also being named to the NCAC 20th Anniversary All-Decade team, Yuskewich is the second volleyball player in league history to be named to a pair of all-decade squads. She is joined by former Wittenberg great Beth Green who was named to both the 10th and 20th Anniversary teams. Williams, the only four-time first-team All-NCAC selection on the All-Decade team, was one of the top hitters in the league during her four-year career. She set the NCAC’s single season record for hitting percentage in the current 25-point game format in 2008 after hitting .379 (256-53/535) and is also the single season record holder for hitting percentage in the former 30-point game format with .382 hitting percentage (316-66/654) in 2007. Williams, named the NCAC Freshman of the Year in 2005, finished her career with a .370 hitting percentage (1379-298/2919), which still tops the list in Wittenberg’s career record book. The North Coast Athletic Conference is celebrating its 30th playing season by selecting All-Decade teams in nearly every championship sport. Players from the first 10 years of play were selected in 1993-94, while players who competed from 1993-2002 were named to the 20th Anniversary All-Decade team. All current head coaches were asked to vote, as were some former coaches and administrators. In the past 10 years Wittenberg has separated itself as not only one of the league’s best programs, but also one of the top programs in the nation as the Tigers won the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2011 with a 3-0 victory over Christopher Newport. Since 2003, the Tigers, under the leadership of head coach Paco Labrador, have accumulated an overall record of 323-46 and a mark of 122-2 against NCAC foes. The Tigers own nine conference championships in the past decade, winning outright titles in 2003, ‘04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, ‘09, ‘11 and ‘12 and sharing the title with Hiram in 2010. Hiram, which placed four student-athletes on the all-decade team, edged out Wittenberg for the 2005 title with an 8-0 record against league opponents.
