Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Mason Espinosa,

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fourty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports competed in the NCAA postAli Ross, DePauw season during the 2012-13 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 32nd time in program history. In addition, the DePauw women’s basketball team raised the Walnut & Broze trophy for the second time in program history, making them the only women’s basketball team in conference history to win a women’s basketball national title. Conference members have accumulated 66 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 221 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

The 2013 Tiger squad will feature 16 returning starters overall, including eight players who earned all-conference accolades in 2012. Senior Reed Florence will again trigger the Wittenberg offensive unit under center, while reigning NCAC Newcomer of the Year Jimmy Dehnke will again get a majority of the carries at running back in his sophomore season. Florence’s aerial assault team will consist of three seniors in tight end Stephen Zumdick, wide receiver Desi Kirkman and wide receiver Brendon Cunningham. The defense is anchored by a trio of senior linebackers who led the Tigers in tackles in 2012: Spencer Leno, Evan Killilea and Kyle Sanning. They are backed by a pair of senior safeties in Heath Eby and Mark Swope. WABASH is looking to get back to the top of the league standings for the seventh time in school history after finishing in a tie with Kenyon for third place a year ago with a 5-2 record against league foes. The Little Giants return nine starters on a defensive unit that ranked eighth in the nation in scoring a year ago after holding the opposition to just 13.1 ppg. The linebacking corps will be led by the trio of senior Nate Scola and juniors AJ Akinribade and Cody Buresh who combined for 244 tackles and 10.5 sacks in 2012, while the defensive backfield will be anchored by Houston Hodges, Denzel Wilkins and Justin Woods. Offensively, senior running back Tyler Holmes will once again look to bolster the ground attack after rushing for 1,067 yards in just eight games last season. Senior Andy Walsh and sophomore Michael Putko will battle for snaps under center in preseason camp, while senior Sean Hildebrand is the squad’s top returning receiver after hauling in 31 passes for 501 yards and seven scores last season. This Fall OHIO WESLEYAN, which shared the 2012 league title with Wittenberg, is primed to continue its success from a year ago. Senior quarterback Mason Espinosa, already OWU’s all-time passing leader, is primed for a successful senior campaign after re-writing both the OWU and NCAC record books as a junior. Espinosa’s top targets this fall will be junior tight end Calvin Cagney and senior wide receiver Dave Mogilnicki. Cagney, a 2012 D3football. com All-American selection, shared the league lead in receptions last fall with 66. The OWU defensive unit will be led by a pair of all-NCAC performers in senior defensive end Jonathan Valentine and senior linebacker Justin Segal. Valentine led the squad with 10.5 sacks in 2012, while Segal tied for the team lead in tackles with 79 (37 solo, 42 asst.). In addition, junior kicker Miles MacKenzie will again play a key role for the Bishops after leading the nation in field goals last year with 18 and finishing third among Div. III kickers in scoring with 83 points. ALLEGHENY returns 15 starters from its 2012 squad that posted an overall record of 5-5 and a mark of 4-3 in conference play to finish in a tie for fifth-place with Denison. The offensive unit will be anchored by a trio of returning starters on the line in senior Ty Pryor and juniors Jesse Battaglia and Zach Palmer. Junior Joe Dawida, who started the final three games under center in 2012, enters camp as the incumbent quarterback and welcomes back junior Derrick Emigh, junior Andrew Nicklaus and senior Isaac Gittens as the team’s top three receivers. The trio of receivers combined to haul in 89 receptions for 776 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Although the defensive unit lost six full-time starts to graduation, it does return eight lettermen, led by senior linebacker Brad Burkley who totaled 11.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks last fall. Junior safety Raysean Glenn, who posted 45 tackles and two interceptions a year ago, returns as the squad’s top defensive back, while senior Patrick Jamison and junior Ryan Sherry will lead a veteran defensive line.

DEPAUW welcomes back a familiar face to lead the Tigers in 2013 as Bill Lynch returns to the sidelines after guiding DPU to an 8-2 record in his previous stint as head coach in 2004. Like rival Wabash, DPU will enter camp with a quarterback competition between Justin Murray and Drew Seaman. The duo split time in 2012 with each topping the 1,000-yard plateau in passing yards. Senior Nikko Sansone heads the returning receivers after totaling 439 yards on 44 receptions last fall, while senior Armani Cato rushed for 322 yards on 99 carries and found the endzone five times. The offensive line also returns three key starters in Craig Neece, Kody Bontreger and Taylor Shellman. Senior linebacker Mitch Dwenger came off the bench in 2012 but was in on 58 tackles including six for loss, while senior tackle Patrick Keller led the team with 6.0 sacks. Senior Eric Malm is back after three years as a starting placekicker, while sophomore Paul Simon returns after averaging 38.7 yards per punt including a school-record 75 yarder. KENYON aims to build upon its success from last fall as the 2012 Lords ranked among the NCAA’s most improved teams with a six-game swing in the win column from 2011. KC posted an overall mark of 6-4, but was even more impressive in league play after finishing in a tie for third with a 5-2 record. The Lords boast one of the best linebacking trios in the conference in Kolin Sullivan, Brad Couts and Reed Franklin, while the defensive line is anchored by Cam Ventling, Marquis Johnson, Garrison Anderson and Ryan Rosen. Offensively, the Lords will have to replace six starters from 2012, including the team’s leaders in passing, receiving and rushing. Seniors William Brackett and Patrick Brady will try to soften the blow by providing direction on a retooled offensive line, while receiver Nick Gasbarro and tight end Greg McIntosh will contribute additional experience in the passing game. DENISON returns four starters on each side of the ball from a squad that finished 4-3 in league play and 4-6 overall in 2012. There will be numerous battles in camp on the offensive side as the Big Red lost 71 percent of the team’s total offense from a season ago to graduation. John Wilson and Colin Morris will battle for carries at tailback, while DuShawn Brown and Hunter Winans will look to build upon strong freshman campaigns at wide receiver. Although there will be plenty of re-tooling at the skill positions, DU does return four starters on the offensive line, including Matt Cochran, Tim Demers, Nathan Bartell and Danny Webb. The defense will be led by Teddy Kuntz who posted a team-high 7.0 sacks and 11.5 tackles-for-loss last year. Senior linebacker Joel Elliott is coming off a season that saw him post 49 tackles. The team’s two starting cornerbacks in Alec Fultz and Riley Tight also return to the defensive backfield. WOOSTER is ushering in a new era in 2013 with the hiring of first-year head coach Frank Colaprete. With a new coaching staff in place and a new spread offense scheme in the playbook, nearly every position will be an open competition when the Fighting Scots open camp. 2010 NCAC Newcomer of the Year Richard Barnes will report to camp vying for the starting quarterback job. In his threeyear career, Barnes has totaled 4,433 yards (3,883 pass, 550 rush) and 35 touchdowns. Wide receiver Justin Rice looks to build on his 25-catch, 310-yard 2012 season, while tight end Jake Zoldan is the only other returning starting skill player; however, six veterans with starting experience will be part of the offensive line. The defense will switch to a 4-2-5 scheme this fall with Brendon Taylor sliding up to the defensive end position from linebacker, while the new-look linebacking corps will feature former running back John Battaglia. Two of the defense’s top players will be free safety Brandon James and strong safety Mitchell Czerniak. The duo combined for 164 tackles and three interceptions a year ago. OBERLIN will have a plethora of new starters on both sides of the ball when the season opens on Sunday, September 15 at home against Case. The Yeomen will turn to sophomore signal caller Lucas Poggiali to run the offense this fall after he totaled 815 passing yards and three touchdowns in a reserve role a year ago. He will be joined in the backfield by a trio of talented running backs in Moses Richardson, Justin Williams and Blake Buckhannon. Through the air, Poggiali’s top target will be Adam Niec who was injured for a majority of last season, but still managed to catch 12 balls for 188 yards in three games. The defense will be led in the secondary by Zach Kisley, while the senior duo of Kirby Livingston and Jake Danko will apply the pressure on the defensive line. HIRAM returns 41 letterman and a total of 16 starters from 2012, including All-NCAC selection Dan Fanzo on the offensive line. Senior quarterback George Black, who suffered a season-ending injury in game one last fall, will compete with Rob Partridge for the starting job in 2013. Partridge is a transfer from Notre Dame College. The Terriers’ defensive unit will be led by Josh Peacock who led the team in tackles last year from his defensive back position with 106 (52 solo, 54 asst.). In addition, Peacock was tied for second on the team in tackles-for-loss with 8.0 to go along with two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. Tevin Weaver also returns to the defensive backfield as an impact player after totaling 44 tackles and two interceptions in 2012.

Nineteen lettermen, including 15 starters, return for an Allegheny squad that finished 5-5 in 2012, marking the 25th time in the past 26 seasons it recorded a record at or above the .500 mark. Offensively, the team looks to be anchored by a trio of returning starters on the line, senior Ty Pryor and juniors Jesse Battaglia and Zach Palmer. Junior Joe Dawida, who started the final three games last season, enters camp as the incumbent at quarterback, and welcomes back the team’s top three receivers, juniors Derrick Emigh and Andrew Nicklaus and senior Isaac Gittens. Last season’s top rusher, fullback Tim Werley, has graduated, but the ground game returns five players who combined for 485 yards and three touchdowns in seniors Ben Perko and Joel DeFelice and sophomores Brandon Ginoza, Tyler Smith, and Anthony Opet. The Gator defense has lost six full-time starters to graduation, including five All-NCAC honorees. However, eight lettermen do return, led by senior linebacker Brad Burkley, who recorded 11.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks in 2012. Three starters return to the secondary, led by junior safety Raysean Glenn, who posted 45 tackles and two interceptions, emerging as an explosive playmaker. Juniors Julian Henderson and Ronnie Borne are back at corner after combining for 30 tackles and three pass breakups, while senior end Patrick Jamison and junior tackle Ryan Sherry lead a veteran defensive line. On special teams, junior kicker Ryan Mong is back after going 8-for-10 on field goals and 9-for-11 on extra points, while Emigh earned All-NCAC honors as a returner, averaging 11 yards on punt returns and 16.8 yards on kick returns.

Fourth-year head coach Jack Hatem returns four starters on each side of the ball in 2013. Last season, the Big Red went 4-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference play and were 4-6 overall. Plenty of question marks will surround the Big Red offense in 2013 following the graduation of all-conference performers Sam Fioroni, Braden Layer and Max Paulus. The trio accounted for 71 percent of the team’s total offense a season ago. Tailbacks John Wilson and Colin Morris will vie for the starting position left vacant by Fioroni while sophomores DuShawn Brown and Hunter Winans will look to parlay strong rookie campaigns at wide receiver. While there will be plenty of retooling at many of the skill positions, Hatem returns four of five starters on the offensive line, led by second-team All-NCAC left tackle Matt Cochran. Joining Cochran up front will be Tom Demers, Nathan Bartell and Danny Webb. On defense, NCAC honorable mention pick Teddy Kuntz was granted a medical hardship from the NCAA and will return for his second season as a starter at defensive end. Kuntz posted a team-high seven sacks and 11.5 TFLs last year. At linebacker, senior Joel Elliott is coming off a season that saw him post 49 tackles. The team’s two starting cornerbacks in Alec Fultz and Riley Tight also return to the defensive backfield.

Head Coach Chris Monfiletto

Alma Mater Davidson '04

Kenyon ranked among the NCAA’s most improved teams last season. A six-game swing in the win column and a tie for third place in the 2012 NCAC standings were remarkable accomplishments for the Lords and their first-year head coach Chris Monfiletto. If the team hopes to prolong the success in 2013, it will have to rely upon a veteran defense that lost just two starts to graduation. Ranked second in the NCAC one season ago, the Kenyon defense boasts one of the best linebacker trios in the conference. Seniors Kolin Sullivan, Brad Couts, and Reed Franklin comprise a formidable unit that accounted for a total of 275 tackles, including 36 for losses, last season. Sullivan was tabbed both an allconference and all-American player. In front of them, Cam Ventling, Marquis Johnson, Garrison Anderson, and a healthy Ryan Rosen return to a line that held opponents to an average of just 99.6 rushing yards per game. While the defense remains nearly intact, there will be plenty of construction on offense, where the Lords need to replace six starters. Gone are team leaders in passing, receiving, and rushing. Seniors William Brackett and Patrick Brady will try to soften the blow by providing direction on a retooled offensive line, while receiver Nick Gasbarro and tight end Greg McIntosh will contribute additional experience in the passing game.

The Little Giants look to rebound from an 8-2 season in 2012 despite handing NCAC co-conference champions Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg their only league losses. Wabash returns nine defensive starters from last season’s unit that ranked eighth in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 13.1 points per game. The linebacking corps of senior Nate Scola and juniors AJ Akinribade and Cody Buresh combined for 244 tackles and 10-1/2 sacks. Scola ranked among the top-100 defensive players in total tackles by averaging nine per contest. Joining the three linebackers again this season are defensive backs Houston Hodges, Denzel Wilkins, and Justin Woods. Jorge Diaz-Aguilar and Tyler McCullen anchor the front line on defense. Senior running back Tyler Holmes is coming off the first 1,000-yard season of his career. Holmes ran for 1,067 yards in eight games to provide offensive balance for the Little Giants. All-NCAC quarterback Chase Belton has graduated, but senior backup Andy Walsh and sophomore Michael Putko enter 2013 among the top picks to take over the signal-calling duties. A veteran offensive line with four returning starters and an experienced receiving corps will also help the quarterback transition. WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY Head Coach Joe Fincham

Outlook

With three NCAC championships in the last four years and more than 50 letterwinners slated to return in 2013, Head Coach Joe Fincham leads a Wittenberg program with plenty of momentum. Things start on offense with nine returning starters, including senior quarterback Reed Florence, who threw for 2,819 yards and rushed for 485 more in 2012. He accounted for 35 touchdowns (28 passing, 7 rushing) en route to second-team All-NCAC honors. Florence’s offensive line returns four of five starters, including All-NCAC tackles Matt Widemon and Aaron Coeling. He has plenty of play-makers to work with as well, including NCAC Newcomer of the Year Jimmy Dehnke, who piled up 827 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns as a freshman. Through the air, senior Brendon Cunningham returns after catching 61 passes in 2012, as does senior Desi Kirkman, a record-setting return man who also caught 46 passes a year ago. Seven players who caught at least seven passes in 2012 are slated to return, including senior tight end Stephen Zumdick, who earned first-team All-NCAC honors. The defense is anchored by a trio of senior linebackers who led the Tigers in tackles in 2012: Spencer Leno, Evan Killilea and Kyle Sanning. They are backed by a pair of senior safeties in Heath Eby and allconference honoree Mark Swope.

Alma Mater Ohio '88 Record at WU 154-35 (18th year) Overall Record 154-35 (18th year) • Fifth head coach at Wittenberg since 1955. • Spent six seasons as Tigers' offensive line coach from 1990-95. • Is Wittenberg’s all-time winningest head coach. • Six-time NCAC Coach of the Year and two-time AFCA region coach of the year.

Wooster is ushering in a new era in 2013, as first-year coach Frank Colaprete looks to reestablish the Fighting Scots as a winning program. Prior to last season’s uncharacteristic 2-8 campaign, Wooster had finished among the top-five in the NCAC standings 17 consecutive seasons (1995-2011). The new coaching staff, which will run a version of the Spread offense, views every position as an open competition, including quarterback where three-year starter Richard Barnes returns. The 2010 NCAC Newcomer of the Year has totaled 4,433 yards (3,883 passing, 550 rushing) and 35 touchdowns (26 passing, 9 rushing) during his career. Junior wide receiver Justin Rice, who looks to build on his 25-catch, 310-yard season, and sophomore tight end Jake Zoldan are the only other starting skill players who return to their position, however, six veterans with starting experience will be part of the offensive line, which could be the team’s strength on that side of the ball. Defensively, the Scots will transition to a 4-2-5 scheme. Brendon Taylor, who made 59 tackles as a linebacker, slides up to end, and he is expected to anchor the defensive line, and the new-look linebacking corps will feature fellow senior John Battaglia, formerly a running back. Two of the defense’s top players will likely be free safety Brandon James and strong safety Mitchell Czerniak. The two hard-hitting juniors combined for 164 tackles and three interceptions a year ago.

2012 REVIEW

Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg tied for the 2012 NCAC title after each finished the season with a 6-1 mark against league foes. For the Tigers, it was their 11th conference title, while the Battling Bishops earned a share of the title for the first time since 1989. Wittenberg earned the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament via a tiebreaker. The Tigers earned a thrilling 52-38 victory over Heidelberg in the first round, but were eliminated by Hobart, 35-10, in round two. The Mike Gregory Award as the NCAC’s Offensive Player of the Year went to Ohio Wesleyan junior quarterback Mason Espinosa. Espinosa led the league in passing (3371 yards) and total offense (3252 yards) to lead OWU to a share of the league title. Oberlin senior defensive end Clay Eaton collected the Hank Critchfield Award as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Eaton led the NCAC with 17 total sacks (16 solo, 1 asst.) and was second in the league with 22.5 tackles-for-loss. Wittenberg freshman Jimmy Dehnke earned the Newcomer of the Year Award after finishing fourth among league rushers with 827 yards (75.2 ypg) and leading the NCAC with 11 rushing touchdowns.

ALL-DECADE TEAM Wooster running back Tony Sutton and the Wabash duo of quarterback Matt Hudson and inside linebacker Adrian Pyneburg highlight the North Coast Athletic Conference All-Decade Football Team. The trio leads a list of 34 players who dominated NCAC football over the past decade, 2003-12. Sutton established himself as the NCAC's all-time leading rusher with 5,613 yards. During his two playing seasons in the previous decade, Sutton was the back-toback Mike Gregory Award winner as the conference's Offensive Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004. Over those two seasons he combined for 4,195 rushing yards and 61 rushing touchdowns. Sutton, who was invited to the Cleveland Browns Rookie Mini-Camp prior to the 2005 NFL season, still holds numerous NCAA Division III career records including rushing yards per game (187.1) and points per game (16.0). Hudson, a back-to-back Mike Gregory Award winner in 2008 and 2009, finished his four-year career at Wabash with 8,420 passing yards and 79 touchdown strikes through the air. Hudson's name still appears in the NCAC record book for career completion percentage at 66.1 as he connected on 635 of his 960 career passing attempts. In his four years, the Little Giants won three-straight NCAC Championships (2006-08) and also qualified for the NCAA Div. III Tournament in 2007, '08 and '09. Pyneburg leads a long list of gifted defenders that competed in the NCAC during the previous decade as an All-NCAC first-team selection for three consecutive seasons (2005-07). He also collected back-to-back Hank Critchfield Awards as the league's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2006 and 2007. In his four-year career at Wabash, Pyneburg accumulated 451 total tackles, including 73.5 tackles-for-loss and 26.5 sacks. The North Coast Athletic Conference is celebrating its 30th playing season by selecting All-Decade teams in nearly every championship sport. Players from the first 10 years of play were selected in 1993-94, while players who competed from 1993-2002 were named to the 20th Anniversary All-Decade team. All current head coaches were asked to vote, as were some former coaches and administrators. In the past decade, Wabash and Wittenberg each tallied four NCAC titles with the Little Giants winning three outright titles (2007, '08 & '11) and one shared title (2006) and the Tigers claiming two outright titles (2009 & '10) and two shared titles (2006 & '12). The two schools combined for 19 of the 34 players selected to the 30th Anniversary All-Decade team. In total, 16 players were honored on offense, while 18 players were honored on defense. The only active player to appear on the third NCAC All-Decade Team is current Wabash junior A.J. Akinribade, who is a two-time All-NCAC first-team selection (2011-12) and was the 2011 NCAC Newcomer of the Year.
