NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ALLEGHENY COLLEGE * DENISON UNIVERSITY * DEPAUW UNIVERSITY * HIRAM COLLEGE * KENYON COLLEGE OBERLIN COLLEGE * OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY * WABASH COLLEGE * WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY * COLLEGE OF WOOSTER

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The Molly Martorella, Oberlin NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate

athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-three teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all ten members competed in the Craig Osterbrock, Wittenberg NCAA post-season during the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Denison claimed the men’s title for the second consecutive season. In addition, Wittenberg claimed the leagues’ first-ever volleyball title and Ohio Wesleyan garnered the second men’s soccer title in league and school history. Conference members have accumulated 65 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 157 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

WITTENBERG PICKED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 29TH NORTH COAST WOMEN’S LACROSSE SEASON Wittenberg emerged as the favorite in the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse preseason poll, based on balloting from the league coaches. The Tigers, who posted a perfect NCAC regular season in 2012 before falling to Denison, which in the NCAC Tournament championship game, earned six of nine available first-place votes from league coaches for 77 points. Denison earned its NCAC-leading 17th crown in 2012, was selected to finish second in the poll after garnering the final three first-place votes and totaling 74 points. The Tigers and Big Red will be aiming for a rematch in the NCAC Tournament championship game in 2013. Wooster (61) finished third in the poll, followed by Kenyon (51), Allegheny (45), Ohio Wesleyan (36) and Oberlin (32). DePauw (18) and Hiram (11) round out the pre-season poll as 2013 marks the inaugural season for both the Tigers and Terriers and the first time in the history of the NCAC nine teams will compete for the conference crown. The Wittenberg offense returns four of its top five scorers from a year ago, including junior Ali Marousek (Ballston Lake, NY/Porstmouth (NH)), who recorded 65 total points (38g, 27a). Senior Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill) and junior Francine Murzynski (Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) are back as well, and will provide experience for the offense after collecting 42 points (25g, 17a) and 40 points (26g, 14a) last season, respectively. Second-year head coach Beth Hemminger, who posted a 12-5 record in her inaugural season at the helm, leads the Tigers. Denison leads all NCAC squads with 17 conference championships in 28 seasons (1985-1994, 1996 ,1999-2001, 2006 and 2011-12). Wooster has collected six conference titles (2002-04, 2007, 2009-10), while Oberlin has earned three (1995, 1997-98) and Ohio Wesleyan has garnered two (2005 and 2008). Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
