Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete Molly Martorella, Oberlin
with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-three teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all ten members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC added Craig Osterbrock, Wittenberg another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Denison claimed the men’s title for the second consecutive season. In addition, Wittenberg claimed the leagues’ first-ever volleyball title and Ohio Wesleyan garnered the second men’s soccer title in league and school history. Conference members have accumulated 65 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 157 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 16TH NORTH COAST SOFTBALL SEASON CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference softball coaches have selected Denison as the preseason favorite based on balloting in the annual preseason coaches’ poll. The Big Red, who claimed their sixth NCAC Tournament title after defeating DePauw in the championship game a year ago, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting five first-place votes and 73 total points. Allegheny, last year’s conference champion, garnered three first-place votes and finished behind Denison in the polls with 66 points. DePauw, last year’s tournament runner-up, finished third with 61 points followed by Hiram (50) in fourth. Ohio Wesleyan (48) earned the final first-place vote and finished fifth in the poll, followed by Wooster (44), Wittenberg (33), Oberlin (20) and Kenyon (10). Denison returns four of its top six hitters from last season as well as its entire pitching staff. Junior Meghan Edwards (Morton Grove, IL/Loyola Academy) leads all Big Red returners after hitting .310 (45-of-145) with three home runs, eight doubles, 24 runs scored and 28 RBI in 2012. Denison’s three other returning leaders combined for a .496 average (206-of-415) with 33 of the Big Red’s 71 doubles, 53-of-189 runs scored and 56-of-170 RBI. Junior Kelsey Hager (Louisville, KY/Eastern) returns to lead a trio of Big Red pitchers that combined for 234 strikeouts and sported a 2.93 combined earned run average while holding batters to just a .259 average. Leading Denison in 2013 will be Tiffany Ozbun (137-75, .646), a two-time recipient of the NCAC Coach of the Year award. Since taking over the program in 2008, Ozbun has led DU to 137 victories, three NCAC Tournament Championships, three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances and three conference titles. Since the NCAC began sponsoring softball as a championship sport in 1998, four different teams have claimed conference championships. Denison leads the way in that grouping with eight titles (2001-03, ‘06, ‘07, 2009-11), while Allegheny has captured five (1998, ‘99, 2004, ’08, ’12), Ohio Wesleyan three (‘04, ‘05, ‘10) and Wittenberg one (‘00). The NCAC instituted the conference tournament in 2001 to determine the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red have earned six tournament titles (‘01, ‘02, ‘06, ‘08, ’09, ’12), followed by Allegheny with three (‘04, ‘05, ‘07), Hiram with two (‘09, ‘11) and Wittenberg with one (‘03).
