Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.
Sarah Fowler, Ohio Wesleyan
The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.
Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-two teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jack Lindell, Denison nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2015-16 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championship last year as Denison claimed the men’s title for the third time in program history. In addition, the Wittenberg women’s volleyball team advanced to the national title match for the second time in school history, where the Tigers finished as the national runner-up following a 3-0 loss against Cal Lutheran. Conference members have accumulated 70 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2015-16 academic year, 228 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

The Little Giants lost two All-Americans in running back Mason Zurek and defensive end Tyler McCullen from last year’s 12-1 team. However, former offensive coordinator Don Morel, who takes the reins as head coach this season, will have 16 total starters returning. Senior quarterback Connor Rice threw for 2,343 yards and 19 touchdowns in 12 starts last season to earn honorable mention AllNCAC honors. Senior wideout Drake Christen topped the receiving charts for Wabash with 67 catches for 604 yards and five TDs. Fellow senior Sammy Adams caught 25 passes for 436 yards and three TDs. Sophomores Oliver Page (22 rec., 465 yds., 5 TDs) and Ryan Thomas (14 rec., 164 yds., 1 TD) return, as well. All-NCAC linemen Kyle Stucker and Deryion Sturdivant will anchor the front again for the Little Giants in 2016. Seven starters --- including four All-NCAC first-team and 2016 preseason All-America selections Ethan Buresh (OLB), Connor Ludwig (ILB), Delon Pettiford (DB) and Austin Brown (DB) --- are back for the Little Giants’ defensive unit. Brown paced the defense with 97 tackles, while Ludwig recorded 92. Wabash ranked fifth in the nation in total defense and sixth in scoring defense in 2015. WITTENBERG will seek vengeance in their 2016 season with 38 returning letterwinner after finishing in a tie for second in the 2015 NCAC standings. Among the returning letterwinners are six of the 13 Tigers who earned All-NCAC honors last fall. Wittenberg will have an experienced offensive line behind four returning starters, along with 2014 All-NCAC first-team linemen Alec Nutting and senior Zach Hoffman who are coming back after missing all of 2015 with injuries. They will be protecting one of three returners and an incoming freshmen that will be competing for the QB position during training camp. Seniors Luke Landis and Luke Bowling will return at wide out, with Tyler Everidge back at tight end. The defense features four returning linebackers, led by secondteam, All-NCAC performer Dustin Holmes. The defensive line lost AllNCAC performer Josh Bannick, and thus are looking for production from senior Bobby Saul at the defensive tackle position, while Chandler Ferko and Austin Towsey look to build off productive 2015 seasons at defensive end. The secondary returns a pair of safeties in senior Jay Mastin and junior Keenan Wilson, as well as sophomore standout corner Rashon Edwards. DEPAUW returns 39 lettermen, including 17 starters from last year’s 8-2 squad that tied for second in the NCAC and posted an 8-2 overall record. Six starters return to an offense that broke the school record with 393 points and scored at least 35 points in seven contests. Senior quarterback Matt Hunt, a three-year starter, completed nearly 65 percent of his passes for 2,413 yards with 26 touchdowns. Senior Ian Good and junior Jake Hagan return as starters at receiver, while sophomore Andy Hunt, who came off the bench last year, is back after earning NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors and leading the team in receiving.
Senior Jason Kirchhoff led the Tigers with 757 yards, while senior Cody Campbell is back at left guard and junior Jeremy Trudell returns to the right tackle spot. Eight starters are back on a defensive unit that recorded three shutouts for the first time since 1985. All four starters are back on the defensive line, including seniors Kevin Kiyosaki (DE) and Peter Nelson (DT), and juniors Chris Hawk (DT) and Joel Kauth (DE). Senior Michael Mitsch, a first-team, All-NCAC tackle in 2014, missed last season’s final nine games due to injury, but returns for a final season. Seniors Thomas Gray and Will Longthorne are back at linebacker. Longthorne paced the Tigers with 104 tackles, while Gray was third with 52 tackles last season. Returning to the secondary are seniors Zachary Reichle and Cody Baker. Senior Marko Adams will again handle the Tigers’ placekicking chores after connecting on 45-of-50 extra points and 8-of-17 field goals. DENISON finished the 2015 season with a 7-3 record, marking the program’s third-consecutive winning season. Seventh-year head coach Jack Hatem returns 15 starters to the fold in 2016. Four of five starters on the offensive line return in seniors Drew Gray and Zack Troy and sophomores Josh Blaz and Michael Carlin. They will be charged with protecting sophomore quarterback Canaan Gebele who appeared in nine games as a freshman. Gebele played in nine games, starting four and combining for over 1,700 yards and 18 touchdowns. Gebele completed 69 percent of his passes and was also a threat to run, scrambling 116 times for 430 yards and six TDs. Just over half of the starters on defense return, led by senior defensive backs Andrew Baird and Joel Lohoua. Baird, a second-team All-NCAC pick, has posted two consecutive seasons with 90-plus tackles. Lohoua was named to the All-NCAC, first-team after recording 49 tackles and two interceptions. The Denison defense held opponents to 18.4 points per game, the lowest total since 1989. Honorable mention All-NCAC linebacker Anthony Sernus is back for his final season in Granville. He finished with a career-high 88 tackles a season ago. On special teams, honorable mention placekicker Conor Dunn returns. He was 13-for-15 on field goal tries last season. OHIO WESLEYAN and head coach Tom Watts return experienced units on both sides of the line of scrimmage as the Battling Bishops seek to return to NCAC championship contention in 2015. The Bishops return seven starters on defense, led by a trio of returning All-NCAC picks in senior end Gary Brodek and senior linebackers Deion Centeno and Brad Dotson. Centeno and Brodek ranked among the conference’s top-10 in tackles last year, with Brodek leading the league in tackles for loss, while Dotson was among the NCAC’s top-20 in stops. Senior tackle Beau Michel, senior linebacker Keaton Leppla, junior cornerback Jerry Harper and junior safety Ben Rubel also are returning starters. Senior quarterback Dominic Orsini returns at the helm of the Bishop offense after accounting for nearly 2400 yards last season. Seniors Tim Shadoan, a first-team, All-NCAC pick as a return specialist last year, along with classmates Adrian Bishop and Eugene Coleman, are back at receiver. Junior TraVon Wilkes returns in the backfield. The Bishop offensive line returns four starters in senior center Zach Croftcheck, senior guard Brooks Gilmore and junior tackles Stephen McGrath and Richard Spernoga.

2016 PREVIEW - Cont. HIRAM will feature a new face on the sidelines this fall, as Henry Stanford takes over as head coach of the program after serving as an assistant with the Terriers for the previous three seasons. Hiram, which finished 4-6 last season, returns 53 letter winners from last season’s squad. On offense, the Terriers welcome back All-NCAC running back Danny Robinson. Last year, Robinson led the team with 736 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Nic Paolo is back after taking over quarterback duties midseason. Paolo finished with a 57.3 percent completion percentage and 11 touchdown passes. Hiram also returns the core of its offensive line, led by All-NCAC honoree Antwand Hill. The Terrier defense took a hit, but still returns three All-NCAC honorees from last season. Linebackers D.D. Fleetion and Kyle Burchett both return after putting together monster seasons. Fleetion finished with 88 tackles and 12 tackles for loss. Burchett posted an NCAC leading 121 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and four sacks. Zayd Mabin, who also earned All-NCAC honors, is also back after leading the team with five sacks. KENYON will look to utilize an expanding roster to improve upon on its 2-8 record from the 2015 season in which the Lords suffered four losses by 10 points or less. Offensively, Kenyon will have several pieces to work with. Senior wideout Brian Hunca led the conference with 1,096 receiving yards last season, while versatile junior Ian Bell made contributions in just about every facet of the game, including 371 receiving yards and 229 rushing yards. They’ll have to set the tone for the offense, which will transition to a new quarterback in the absence of graduate Jake Bates. Josh Walmer and Casey Cook will help anchor the line, while running back Rob Meagher, who showed flashes as a freshman, should expect a heavy workload this fall. Plenty of experience returns for the Lords’ defensive unit. Up front, All-NCAC performer Jamal Perkins and Quashae Hendryx will be expected to lead the line. Behind them are capable, experienced linebackers in Saxon Justice, Jacob LaPoint, Mike Gibbons and Cody Keenan. In the secondary, All-NCAC selection Curt Williams, along with Jack Hanratty and Brandon Byrd, will be keys to an improving pass defense. WOOSTER will have relatively youthful, but experienced squad this fall, as only seven seniors will suit up for the Fighting Scots football squad. However, fourth-year head coach Frank Colaprete is confident that Wooster can make a rapid jump up the standings in the challenging NCAC. Last year, Wooster’s young offense in particular, started clicking late in the season as the Scots piled up 1,438 yards of total offense over the final three games. On the flip side, the defense showed a lot of poise and promise, recording at least two takeaways in four games, including two of the last three, and a season-best six in the conference opener at Allegheny.
OBERLIN will have a new man under center this fall as four-year starter Lucas Poggiali has moved into a coaching role under third-year head coach Jay Anderson. Junior Christian Flynn, who orchestrated a 28-23 road win at Wooster in his only career start last season, is the incumbent, but highly touted freshman from Artesia, California, Zach Taylor is expected to challenge for the job. The main ball carriers for the Yeomen will be determined in preseason camp with juniors Kahlil Rivers and Joe Myrick leading the pack, while sophomore Chuck Williams and freshman Melvin Briggs will also be in the mix. Senior 2014 All-NCAC selection Justin Cruz headlines a dangerous wide receiving corps that will surely give fits to NCAC foes this fall. Sophomore returners Robby Reinheimer, Jabari Clemmons, Ryan Glesson and junior Corey Fussinger will join Cruz, as together they combined for 13 of the team’s 16 receiving TDs a season ago. Oberlin return’s four of its five starters upfront, headlined by junior center Avery McThompson who started all 10 games in 2015. The Yeomen welcome back nine starters on defense. Seniors Larry Leggett and Adrian Kelly will quarterback the unit from their deep secondary positions. However, opposing foes will need to worry about linebackers Justin Bute and Bennett Jackson, as they led the team with 84 and 67 tackles, respectively. Bute also matched Anthony Allen with a team-high four sacks last year. ALLEGHENY, under first-year coach B.J. Hammer, looks to rebound from a disappointing 2015 campaign. The Gators return plenty of faces on both sides of the ball, while they will also welcome in upwards of 70 freshmen for preseason camp. Offensively, the Gators were hit hard by graduation at both receiver and the offensive line, but a pair of signal-callers who each saw time in all 10 games are back in sophomore Logan Lee and senior Jon Nigro. Senior tight end John McFarland is the leading pass catcher returning after hauling in 30 receptions last season, while junior Jake Wilson returns to the running back spot, and will be joined by sophomore Tyler Balla, who was a receiver in 2015. On defense, seven starters are slated to return, led by junior linebacker Matt Wetzel (64 tackles, 4.0 TFLs), junior safety Travis Thomas (47 tackles), sophomore corner Tristan Rhoades (29 tackles, 2 INT), and sophomore defensive end Marcus Davenport (46 tackles, 6.0 TFLs). Four-year starting punter Chris Bourne has graduated, but the special teams unit returns its top kicker in senior Ben Ziolkowski, sophomore long snapper Jake Reidenbach, and a pair of dynamic return men in Balla and classmate Jonah Tanner.
Offensively, Wooster returns three starters on the offensive line in Clayton Geib, Patrick Mohorcic and Drake Schwenke, while three more players also return at the skill positions, including Antonio Bailey, Russell Boston and Tyson Vogel. It is a big change from the 2015 season in which Wooster didn’t return a single starter at a skill position. Defensively, Wooster will turn to the interior of the defensive line to lead the way in Riley Markko, Aaron Roberson and Todd Ulmer, who combined for 18 tackles-for-loss a year ago. The Scots also return two experienced starters, and their two leading 2015 tacklers, in the secondary in Christian Golden and Patrick Johnson.

The 2016 Hiram College football team will feature a new face on the sidelines. Henry Stanford takes over as head coach of the program after serving as an assistant with the Terriers for the previous three seasons. Hiram, which finished 4-6 last season, returns 53 letter winners from last season’s squad. On offense, the Terriers welcome back AllNCAC running back Danny Robinson.

With plenty of players returning, especially on the defensive side of the ball, the Kenyon Lords will look to utilize an expanding roster to improve upon on their 2-8 record from the 2015 season in which they suffered four losses by 10 points or less.

The defense features four returning linebackers, led by second-team, All-NCAC performer Dustin Holmes. The defensive line lost All-NCAC performer Josh Bannick, and thus are looking for production from senior Bobby Saul at the defensive tackle position, while Chandler Ferko and Austin Towsey look to build off productive 2015 seasons at defensive end. The secondary returns a pair of safeties in senior Jay Mastin and junior Keenan Wilson, as well as sophomore standout corner Rashon Edwards.

COLLEGE OF WOOSTER Head Coach Frank Colaprete
Outlook
A relatively youthful, but experienced squad will dot the gridiron this fall for The College of Wooster, as only seven seniors will suit up for the Fighting Scots football squad.
Alma Mater John Carroll ‘96 Record at Wooster 13-17 (3 Years) Overall Record 13-17 (3 Years) • Guided the Fighting Scots to a 7-3 record in his first season at the helm in 2013. • Spent two stints at Johns Hopkins as an assistant coach; first from 2001-06 and most recently from 2010-12. • Spent three seasons (2007-09) at Georgetown as defensive line coach.

2015 SEASON REVIEW Wabash picked up its seventh NCAC football title in program history last fall after cruising through its conference slate with a perfect 9-0 record and posting an overall mark of 12-1. The Little Giants then reeled off back-to-back wins in the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament against Albion, 35-14, and Thomas More, 33-27 (OT), before seeing its season come to a close with a 38-7 loss against St. Thomas (MN) in the quarterfinal round. The Little Giants not only put together one of the best team performances in the league in recent history, but they also produced one of the top individual efforts as senior Mason Zurek picked up the Mike Gregory Award as the NCAC’s Offensive Player of the Year. Zurek, who is the first running back to collect the Gregory since 2007, was the only league player to top the 1,000-yard rushing mark last season, as he posted the second-highest single-season rushing total in NCAC history with 2,011 yards. He joined 2004 Wooster graduate Tony Sutton (2,240) as the only two NCAC running backs to eclipse the 2,000-yard rushing mark in a season. Zurek, who was also a D3football.com All-American selection, surpassed the 100-yard mark in 10 different games and scored two or more touchdowns on six different occasions to finish the season with a program-high 23 rushing TDs. Wabash senior defensive lineman Tyler McCullen also collected the Hank Critchfield Award as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. McCullen started all 13 games for the Little Giants last fall and recorded 55 tackles, 17.5 tackles for losses totaling 90 yards, and 9.5 sacks for a total of 70 yards. He also forced one fumble and grabbed his first-career interception in the NCAA Division III football quarterfinals against St. Thomas. McCullen recovered three fumbles, tying him for 13th in nation. DePauw freshman wide receiver Andy Hunt was named the 2015 NCAC Newcomer of the Year after he finished his rookie campaign with 41 receptions for 720 yards and eight touchdowns. After opening the season with just five catches through his first four games, Hunt had a breakout performance with nine receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers’ 35-30 victory over Wittenberg on October 10th. He also added a career-high 10-catch performance in DPU’s 3129 win over Denison on October 31st.
