Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.
Shelby Piper, Allegheny
The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.
Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jake Fling, Wooster nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Wittenberg men’s golf team combined for 1,180 strokes at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills, Florida, to bring the Walnut and Bronze home to Springfield for the first time in history. NCAC member institutions have now collected 71 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2016-17 academic year, 182 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DEPAUW SELECTED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 34TH FIELD HOCKEY SEASON CLEVELAND -- The DePauw University Tigers narrowly edged the Denison University Big Red for the top spot in the 2017 NCAC Preseason Field Hockey Poll based on balloting by the league coaches. DePauw, which won its fourth NCAC Field Hockey title last year, collected four first-place votes and 57 total points in the poll, while DU finished second in the poll after earning one first-place vote and 55 total points. 2016 NCAC Tournament Champion, the Kenyon College Ladies checked in at third with 46 points after collecting the final three first-place votes. Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg tied for fourth in the poll to round out the top-five with 34 total points followed by Wooster (27), Earlham (19) and Oberlin (16). The DePauw Tigers, who will be under the leadership of head coach Erika Burcher for the third year in a row, are seeking their fifth NCAC title in seven years since joining the league in 2011. In two years at the helm, Burcher owns an overall record of 32-9, which includes a mark of 25-3 in regular season conference games and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2015. The Tigers return four all-conference performers from 2016, including NCAC Offensive Player of the Year in senior Paige Berliner (New Albany, OH/Columbus Acad.) and the NCAC Newcomer of the Year, sophomore Kate Milner (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs School). Offensively, the Tigers return their top three point scorers from a season ago that led the NCAC in goals (82) and assists (55). Berliner and Miner along with senior Reilly Bruce (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker) combined for 33 goals and 22 assists for 88 total points in 2016. In all, DePauw returns 74 of its league leading 82 goals from a year ago and 192 of 219 points. Defensively, junior Sarah Foye (Goshen, KY/North Oldham) returns in the cage for the Tigers after boasting a 1.18 goals-against-average, .700 save percentage, 35 saves and three shutouts a season ago.
