Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Shelby Piper, Allegheny

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jake Fling, Wooster nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Wittenberg men’s golf team combined for 1,180 strokes at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills, Florida, to bring the Walnut and Bronze home to Springfield for the first time in history. NCAC member institutions have now collected 71 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2016-17 academic year, 182 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON TOPS PRESEASON POLL AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 34TH MEN’S SOCCER CAMPAIGN CLEVELAND -- Kenyon has been selected as the preseason favorite based on balloting from league coaches heading into the 34th North Coast men’s soccer season. The Lords, who posted a 20-3-0 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the second-straight season in 2016, earned eight of the first-place votes cast by league coaches to finish atop the poll with 98 total points. Ohio Wesleyan, coming off its NCAA-record 39th Division III NCAA Tournament appearance, earned one first-place vote and finished second in the poll with 81 points, while Wabash and Oberlin finished tied for third in the poll with 72 points. The Little Giants, who made its second NCAC Tournament appearance since 2014 last season, received the final first-place vote. DePauw rounded out the top-five in fifth with 71 points after making its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. Denison checked in at sixth with 51 points and Allegheny earned the seventh position with 34 points. Hiram and Wooster tied in the poll at eighth with 28 points, while Wittenberg finished 10th with 15 points. Kenyon enters the 2017 season under the direction of head coach Chris Brown for the 13th consecutive season. In 12 seasons at the helm, Brown has compiled the most wins in program history with a record of 150-61-26, which includes 142 victories over the past 10 seasons and five NCAA appearances during that time. The Lords, who are coming off their second-straight NCAC Title and their eighth overall, return five of their top six scorers from the 2016 squad, including 41 of the team’s 60 total goals that led the NCAC a year ago. Leading the charge for Kenyon this fall is All-American performer, senior Henry Myers (Lebanon, OH/Archbishop Moeller), who accounted for six goals, five assists and 17 total points last season. Junior Brice Koval (Crested Butte, CO/Worcester Academy (MA)) and senior Woo Jeon (Madison, WI/West) join Myers on the offensive unit as the duo combined for 12 goals and nine assists in 2016. Defensively, Myers, who earned NCAC Defensive Player of the Year a season ago, is joined by All-Conference senior Oliver Wynn (Natick, MA/Natick) to anchor a backline that posted a league-leading 11 shutouts and limited opponents to 0.68 goals per game in 2016.
