Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Shelby Piper, Allegheny

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jake Fling, Wooster nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Wittenberg men’s golf team combined for 1,180 strokes at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills, Florida, to bring the Walnut and Bronze home to Springfield for the first time in history. NCAC member institutions have now collected 71 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2016-17 academic year, 182 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON SELECTED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 34TH WOMEN’S SOCCER SEASON CLEVELAND -- After posting double-digit wins for the third consecutive year and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year, Denison was tabbed as the preseason favorite in NCAC Women’s Soccer based on balloting from league coaches. The Big Red earned seven of nine possible first-place votes to top the poll with 79 total points. Denison is coming off its first NCAC Tournament Title since 2010 and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2009-10 seasons. DePauw checked in at second with 66 points, followed by Wittenberg in third with 62 points. The Springfield Tigers received a first-place vote and enter 2017 after earning the program’s fourth NCAC Title and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012 a season ago. Kenyon finished fourth in the poll with 56 points, while Wooster rounded out the top-five with 46 points and collected the final first-place vote. Allegheny and Ohio Wesleyan tied for sixth with 34 points, followed by Oberlin (17) and Hiram (11). Denison will again enter competition this fall under the direction of head coach Gail Murphy. In 20 seasons at the helm of the Big Red women’s soccer program, Murphy has posted a record of 271-103-34 (.706), including seven NCAC championships and 14 appearances in the NCAA Div. III Tournament. The Big Red return three all-conference performers from 2016, including NCAC Midfielder of the Year in junior Maggie Armstrong (Wilmette, IL/New Trier). Offensively, the Big Red returns three of their top six scorers from a season ago that led the NCAC in goals (32) and tied for second in the league with 20 assists. Armstrong, along with senior Grace Murray (Whitefish Bay, WI/Whitefish Bay) and senior Meg Wozniak (Kenilworth, IL/New Trier), combined for 11 goals and five assists for 28 total points in 2016. Returning to anchor the defense is senior goalkeeper Jenny Herold (Miami, FL/Our Lady of Lourdes Acad.) who boasted a 0.97 goals-against-average, .759 save percentage, 63 saves and eight shutouts a season ago.
