Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Shelby Piper, Allegheny

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jake Fling, Wooster nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Wittenberg men’s golf team combined for 1,180 strokes at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills, Florida, to bring the Walnut and Bronze home to Springfield for the first time in history. NCAC member institutions have now collected 71 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2016-17 academic year, 182 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Oberlin................................................................ 10 first-place votes in () After claiming their 14th NCAC Championship in 2016, WITTENBERG returns to the field in 2017 with high hopes for repeating as conference champions. Junior quarterback Jake Kennedy returns as the signal-caller for the Tigers, a year after logging 2,388 yards by air and 19 touchdowns in his first year under center. DeShawn Sarley is poised for a strong junior campaign, as the Cincinnati, Ohio, native led the Tigers in rushing yards in 2016 (754), while averaging 5.0 yards per-carry. On the other side of the ball, Wittenberg returns two linebackers in Terrance Crowe and Jack Kayser that combined for 233 tackles on Wittenberg’s record-setting defense in 2016. In his 21st year at the helm, Joe Fincham enters 2017 in the topten in wins amongst active Division III coaches. Fincham’s staff saw multiple changes in the off-season, as two ex-Tiger quarterbacks were promoted; Reed Florence to offensive coordinator, and Zack Jenkins to wide receiver’s coach. Nathaniel Wilson and Brannon Dunn will serve as co-defensive coordinators for the Tigers in 2017; Wilson will continue to oversee the Tiger’s cornerbacks and Dunn the safeties. WABASH returns 11 starters from its 2016 squad, including junior wide receivers Oliver Page and Ryan Thomas. The duo combined for 73 receptions, 1,067 yards, and 12 touchdowns last season. Junior Austin Nightingale is the only quarterback on the roster to have taken a varsity snap for the Little Giants after serving as a backup last year. Junior transfer Adam Vance threw for 4,201 yards and 38 touchdowns in two season at Golden West College. Matt Penola led the Little Giants’ rushing attack with 690 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2016. Isaac Avant carried for 300 yards and two scores in his first season. Tyler Downing missed six games due to an injury after rushing for 214 yards and four scores. All-NCAC center Kyle McAtee will anchor the offensive line along with returning starters Tim Leath, an All-NCAC guard, and tackle Daniel Kimball. First Team All-NCAC corner Brian Parks will once again play alongside fellow All-NCAC defenders Evan Hansen and Brient Hicks. The Little Giants ranked 20th in the nation in total defense by holding opponents to an average of 288.6 yards per game. Hansen finished second in total tackles for Wabash with 64 last season, while Parks ranked among the DIII leaders in passes defended. DENISON enters the 2017 season riding high after a breakthrough 2016 campaign. The Big Red won its first seven games last season and finished in a tie for second place in the NCAC standings with an 8-2 record. That marked the best season at Denison since 1986, but it also continued an upward trend of four-consecutive winning seasons under head coach Jack Hatem, last year’s NCAC Coach of the Year.

Leading the way offensively is junior quarterback Canaan Gebele. A second-team All-NCAC selection in 2016, he completed 64 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,102 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also rushed for 587 yards and eight TDs. Eight additional starters return on offense, including four on the offensive line. Wide receiver David Weimar had an outstanding sophomore season as he finished with 69 receptions for 959 yards and 10 TDs. Michael Carlin (OL), George Carson (OL) and Cody Farley (RB) were also named to the NCAC honorable mention squad last fall. Seven starters return on defense but they will be looking to replace first-team All-NCAC selections Andrew Baird and Joel Lohoua in the defensive backfield. They return second-team free safety Ryan Zinkula who had a career-high 67 tackles a year ago. Seniors David Heyer (DL), Hayden Hatten (LB), Alex Raynor (DB) and Brice Winans (DB) also return to a DU defense that finished second in the conference in total defense and first in pass defense. DEPAUW returns 43 lettermen, including 10 starters from last year’s 8-2 squad that tied for second in the NCAC. Five starters return to an offense that broke the school record with 404 points and 4,909 total yards. Both were records previously set in 2015. The Tigers also matched a school record by scoring at least 35 points in seven games. Returning on the offensive line are left tackle Andrew Saunders, center Ashaun Miller and right tackle Jeremy Trudell. Trudell was a second team all-NCAC choice last year, while Saunders earned honorable-mention accolades. Other offensive returnees include wide receivers Chase Sadler and Andy Hunt. Hunt, the 2015 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, caught 67 passes with 10 touchdowns on the way to landing second team allconference laurels. DePauw’s defense brings back four starters, including defensive end Joel Kauth and linebacker David Cory. A pair of second team all-NCAC players return in the secondary in cornerback Brooks Hepp and safety Rocky Leffler. Hepp led Division III in 2016 in passes defended per game (2.5). Defensive end Nate Orrison also came off the bench last fall to lead the Tigers with 13.5 tackles for loss, including a team-high 9.5 sacks. Junior punter Hunter Sego is back after averaging 35.5 yards per punt and landing 17 of 43 inside the opponents’ 20. OHIO WESLEYAN opens the 2017 season looking to carry over the momentum of last year, which ended with the Battling Bishops winning five of their last six games. The defensive backfield returns intact, with seniors Jerry Harper and Roy Denson, and sophomore Torii Hilbert returning at cornerback, and seniors Brad Brodek and Ben Rubel at safety. Hilbert led the NCAC in interceptions per game last season, while Rubel led OWU defensive backs with 52 tackles. Senior Anthony Chambers returns at one defensive end, with senior end Jermaine Frazer-Phillips and junior tackle David Praul looking to claim starting spots on the line. Juniors Michael Smosny and Cameron Smith are the top returnees at linebacker. The Bishops return a solid offensive line bookended by senior tackles Ryan Ehrhardt and Richard Spernoga, and anchored by senior center Stephen McGrath. Junior Austin Kimbro also returns. That group will pave the way for junior Jesse Beachy and sophomore Alex Barrett, two of the Bishops’ top running backs last season. Sophomore quarterback Jax Harville started three games last year before his season ended with an injury, and senior Brian Berry also returns. Their targets will include senior Wyatt Griffith, the Bishops’ top returning receiver with 13 catches in 2016.

2017 PREVIEW - Cont. WOOSTER is well positioned to challenge the top teams in the NCAC as the Fighting Scots return 16 starters, including nine on offense for the 2017 season. Last season, all-conference quarterback Gary Muntean helped Wooster generate over 400 yards per game, as he averaged 294.0 yards per outing through the air. Now, the Scots will look to have more of a balanced attack with two seasoned running backs in Brandon Adams and Antonio Bailey back in the fold. The Scots also have all five starting offensive linemen back, including projected four-year starter Drake Schwenke. At the skill positions, Wooster’s highly diversified receiving unit returns four student-athletes who had at least 25 receptions and 200 yards receiving in 2016, including juniors Connor Allan and Russell Boston who combined for 50 receptions and 676 yards out of the slot positions. Defensively, graduations hit the defensive line hard, but secondteam all-conference honoree Aaron Roberson is back to lead the way. The Scots have six total starters back on defensive side of the ball, including three in the secondary, led by all-conference cornerback Patrick Johnson and sophomore Christian Santos at safety. HIRAM will look to rebound from a 3-7 season under second-year head coach Henry Stanford. The Terriers return 11 starters to the field, including a first-team AllNCAC running back, in senior Danny Robinson, as well as All-NCAC linebacker Horace Johnson. The Terrier offense, which returns 12 letterwinners and five starters overall, will build off a 2016 season that saw the team shatter nine records, including total offense per game (376.7). Sophomore quarterback Randy Tucker will enter his first full season under center after leading the Terriers to victory in two of their last three games to end 2016. The defense, led by Johnson, sees 16 letterwinners return to a roster that ranked sixth in the conference in total defense last season. With just 12 seniors on the roster in 2017, Hiram will look to rely on its experienced underclassmen as well as a group of fresh faces to give the Terriers a lift in the new year. KENYON enters the upcoming season in search of more balance, especially within their offensive attack. The 2016 team set singleseason program records for pass completions and passing yards, but it also struggled to produce a potent running game. Eight starters, including four linemen, from that offense will be back for the 2017 season. Behind that experienced line, quarterback Thomas Merkle also returns. As a freshman last season, Merkle was named the NCAC Newcomer of the Year after setting Kenyon single-season and single-game records for pass completions and passing yards. Ian Bell, now a senior, will most likely lead the receiving corps. He had 54 catches for 546 yards last season. Sophomore Nat Henry and junior Rob Meagher will try to pick up the pace on the ground. Together they managed 672 rushing yards in 2016. Senior safety Curt Williams and junior defensive end Hayden Gaus highlight the list of Kenyon’s six returning defensive starters. Gaus moved up to the line last year and produced 54 tackles, including a pair of sacks. Meanwhile, Williams ranked third on the team with 77 tackles and also contributed two interceptions. Additionally, senior corner Brandon Byrd is back after leading the team with 10 pass break-ups. Fifth-year head coach Chris Monfiletto will use those key veteran players, along with a much deeper roster, to improve upon last year’s 3-7 record and eighth-place NCAC finish.

ALLEGHENY has 17 starters and 35 lettermen returning in 2017, as the Gators look to continue to build momentum in coach B.J. Hammer’s second season. Offensively, the Gators welcome back a number of their top weapons from a season ago. Junior Logan Lee started nine games under center, and went on to throw for 14 touchdowns while rushing for two more. Two of the team’s top receivers are back in the sophomore tandem of Alex Victor and Ben Bachik, with the former leading the squad in receiving yards (554) and touchdowns (8), and the latter making 19 catches with three scores. On the ground, junior Tyler Balla returns after gaining 443 yards with three touchdowns. The Gators also welcome back a trio of sophomore starters on the offensive line in Dom Antinozzi (LG), Rafael Belanquet (RG) and Zach Wilson (C). On defense, junior end Marcus Davenport looks to lead the way after making 54 tackles, including 9.5 for loss and three sacks. Linebacker Jahnaaman Boone had a big freshman season, leading the team in both tackles for loss (10.5) and sacks (5.0), while senior Freddy Ruiz posted 52 stops, including 6.5 for loss. Classmate Travis Thomas also added 25 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions. On special teams, senior return specialist Jake Wilson had a monster 2016 campaign, as he established the NCAA D-III record with 1,268 kick return yards, bolstered by five returns over 50 yards. At the placekicker position, junior Zach Bednarowicz looks to fill the shoes of graduated four-year starting placekicker Ben Ziolkowski, while sophomore Cody Wendt is in position to see the bulk of the work at punter. There is only one place to go for OBERLIN in 2017 coming off its first winless season since 2000. However, it wasn’t all bad for the Yeomen in 2016 as they found their quarterback of the present and future in the form of sophomore Zach Taylor. He threw for 1,866 yards, completing 177-of-311 passes for a 57 percent success rate. Taylor accounted for 16 total touchdowns, throwing for 12, rushing for three and catching one He averaged 228.4 yards per game of total offense (7th in the NCAC) and his 2,284 yards of total offense ranked second all-time in school history. The Yeomen, who bring back 10 starters on offense, have a trio of capable backs to handle the load behind Taylor. Senior incumbent Kahlil Rivers will get first crack at the starting nod, but sophomore Melvin Briggs will also see plenty of touches. Oberlin will have to replace all-time great Justin Cruz on the outside and will use a plethora of guys to do so. Jabari Clemons and Robby Reinheimer combined for six scores and 860 yards a year ago. The return of Ryan Gleeson off injury will provide another option as will converted QB Christian Flynn as he transitions full time to wide receiver. Defensively, Oberlin returns six of its top seven tacklers from a season ago, and welcomes back eight starters on that side of the ball, including senior rover Bennett Jackson who led the team with 74 stops and three interceptions. At linebacker, Von Wooding looks to build off his fine freshman campaign with 70 tackles and a team-best 6.5 TFL’s. On the edges, opposing foes will have to account for seniors Anthony Allen and Luis Solorzano as they combined for 112 stops and 8 TFL’s. In the secondary it will be up to junior Devin Wilkins and sophomore Jubreel Hason to try and slow down the pass game.

DENISON UNIVERSITY Head Coach Jack Hatem

Outlook

Denison enters the 2017 season riding high after a breakthrough 2016 campaign. The Big Red won its first seven games last season and finished in a tie for second place in the NCAC standings with an 8-2 record. That marked the best season at Denison since 1986, but it also continued an upward trend of four-consecutive winning seasons under head coach Jack Hatem, last year’s NCAC Coach of the Year.

Alma Mater Rio Grande ‘82 Record at DEN 41-29 (7 Years) Overall Record 41-29 (7 Years) • 20th head coach in 124-year history of Denison football. • Guided the Big Red to their most successful season in 30 years last fall with an overall mark of 8-2 and a 7-2 record against NCAC foes. • Named the 2016 NCAC Coach of the Year

The Lords enter the upcoming season in search of more balance, especially within their offensive attack.

There is only one place to go for the Oberlin College football team in 2017, coming off its first winless season since 2000.

2016 SEASON REVIEW Wittenberg collected its league-leading 14th NCAC championship last fall after finishing the conference slate with an 8-1 record and posting an overall mark of 10-2. The Tigers then opened the NCAA Tournament with one of the most memorable games in NCAC history as they knocked off Thomas More, 33-30, in a four-overtime affair. It marked the longest game in the history of the NCAA Division III Tournament, surpassing a three-overtime game that saw West Georgia top Widener, 31-24, in the 1982 season. The Tigers saw their season come to an end the following weekend with a 37-9 loss at Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Tigers also produced two of the top individual performers in the NCAC throughout the 2016 season as senior linebacker Dustin Holmes was crowned the Critchfield Award winner as the league’s top defensive player and classmate Will Gingery garnered the NCAC’s inaugural Special Teams Player of the Year award. Holmes, who is the first Wittenberg player to collect the Critchfield Award since Eddie Vallery in ‘09, was the backbone of the Tigers’ defense that allowed just 163 points (13.6 ppg) in 12 games last season. Holmes racked up 115 tackles (61 solo, 54 asst.), 8.5 tackles-forloss and 2.0 sacks. Holmes also scooped up two fumble recoveries and picked off two passes on the season. Gingery had a record-setting senior campaign for the Tigers as both a punter and kicker. He set the NCAC single-season mark with 110 total kicking points after nailing a league-record 23 field goals and converting 41-of-42 extra-point attempts. He also played a huge role in the field position game for the Tigers as he broke the NCAC single-season record by averaging 43.6 yards per punt (58-2,529). DePauw senior quarterback Matt Hunt was the unanimous selection for the Mike Gregory Award as the league’s top offensive player in 2016. The dualthreat quarterback torched the league with his legs, ranking first in rushing yards (947) and sharing the league lead with 10 rushing TDs. He scored three or more rushing touchdowns against league opponents on three different occasions. The signal caller was also efficient through the air for the Tigers as he finished the season by completing 249-of-388 pass attempts for 2,580 yards and a league-leading 26 touchdown passes. Kenyon freshman quarterback Thomas Merkle was named the NCAC’s Newcomer of the Year as the top player in his first year of collegiate competition. The freshman signal caller provided a boost for the KC passing attack as he finished the season by completing 276-of-464 pass attempts for 2,928 yards and 15 touchdown passes. He eclipsed the 300-yard mark on five different occasions, which included a school-record 438-yard performance in a 48-35 loss against DePauw on October 1st. His 276 completions and 2,928 yards were also singleseason program records for the Lords.
